Limited edition version of the album pressed on 180 Gram yellow vinyl, housed in embossed sleeves, includes MP3 download card. Irish alt-folk and electronica alchemist Seamus Fogarty releases The Curious Hand on Domino. Originally from County Mayo on the west coast of Ireland, Fogarty now resides in London, and the capital provides the canvas for The Curious Hand. It also showcases Seamus’ natural inclination to take his songs and “screw them up,” by applying synthesiser drones and circuit burps, found sounds and spoken-word audio samples that give all of his records such wonderful atmosphere, as if they’re haunted by rogue half-tuned signals from another world. Fogarty’s method of lifting sounds wholesale from his environment and tucking them into the folds of his songs like keepsakes, renders himself at once, artist and archivist as well as twisting the notion of the folk singer’s role as collector and custodian of stories, traditions and cultural curio. The Curious Hand was produced by Seamus and Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno, Wild Beasts) who also plays on the album. Other notable players include Emma Smith on a plethora of instruments (violin, clarinet, bass to name a few), Rozi Plain (backing vocals), Aram Zarikian (drums) and Seamus’ brother John Fogarty (accordion).

Jon Hopkins is a musical shapeshifter: a composer, pianist and a self-taught studio wizard. He makes big, bold electronic music using walls of synths, twinkling melodies and amorphous bass rumbles. as such his two albums have seen him labeled by the likes of ambient patriarch Brian Eno as an electronic innovator while an impressive sweep of artists from Herbie Hancock to David Holmes, not to mention contemporary choreographer Wayne Mcgregor, lo-fi folkster King Creosote and musical bluebloods Coldplay, have all called upon the 28-year-old Londoner's handiwork as a producer and composer. On 'Insides', his Domino debut, Hopkins showcases an intriguing musical aesthetic to brilliant effect. 'Insides' is about juxtaposition: natural, arcane textures welded to pulsing, hypnotic rhythms, beautiful acoustic melodies set against jarring bass. The music is reminiscent of the beautiful melodies and harsh dirty beats of other British artists like Four Tet, Squarepusher, Burial, and Aphex Twin. Above all, 'Insides' is an audacious album which boasts a magical aura all of its own. Hopkins' talents caught the ears of Brian Eno, who enlisted him to work on his 'Another Day on Earth' album and most recently on Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida'. In fact, Coldplay were so taken with Hopkins' music, the band asked him to rework the track 'Light Through the Veins' (from 'Insides') to bookend their album. The pairing eventually led to an invitation to Hopkins to join the band on its 2008 USA, European and Japanese tour, both as an opening act and pre-show DJ

Though not a concept album, it presents twelve variations on a theme: the unknowable nature of truth, and the existential dread that often accompanies that unknowing. He set up a group of theremins that would change in pitch and volume based on how the rats moved. Dan Deacon has announced a new album, the original soundtrack for the Theo Anthony-directed Rat Film. The record arrives on October 13 via Domino Soundtracks. In composing the score, Deacon experimented with its rodent subjects. “I thought it would be interesting to set up a group of theremins to be controlled by rats moving around an enclosure (the volumes and pitches would always be fluctuating based on where/how the rats moved),” he explained in a statement. “Using the data and patterns collected from the rat Theremin performance, as well as impulse data from recordings of rat brain activity, I began to compose the bulk of the score.” His process is also captured in a new “making of” video, which can be viewed below, along with the film’s trailer. Rat Film is an essay-film that looks at the rat infestation in Baltimore (hometown to both Deacon and Anthony) to explore the city’s issues with race and class. After premiering at several international festivals, Rat Film opens in New York City, Los Angeles, and Baltimore on September 15. Find more information on the screenings here. Peter Perrett - former frontman of The Only Ones - releases his debut solo album How The West Was Won through Domino. Perrett, whose incisive songcraft and sardonic drawl made him one of the most distinctive voices of the Seventies hasn’t released any music for 20 years. Bearing in mind his most famous song began “I always flirt with death” (Another Girl, Another Planet), this is one comeback that nobody saw coming. In the hands of certain songwriters, a story of resurrection and redemption might ring a little hollow, but when the songwriter is Peter Perrett, the usual rules have never applied. Perrett makes each song on How The West Was Won sound natural and effortless, as though he were continuing a briefly interrupted conversation rather than picking up the threads of a solo career that faltered two decades ago. He claims to have barely touched a guitar in the decade between The One’s 1996 album Woke Up Sticky and the 2007 reunion of The Only Ones;
with Perrett, a hiatus could so easily turn into a hibernation. Yet Perrett’s familiar voice sounds like it simply stepped out of the room for a few minutes and popped back in again. Backed by his sons - Jamie and Peter Jr. on lead guitar and bass respectively - and produced by Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones), Peter’s intuitive feel for words;
his flair for idiosyncratic metaphors and his deadpan wit are all still as sharp as ever. As demonstrated perfectly by the title track and album opener. It finds him railing against American imperialism and celebrity culture. The songs on How The West Was Won examine complex emotional terrain and extreme human behaviour, shot through as always with wry self-analysis. In a sense the album is a Perrett family affair: there are love songs (An Epic Story, C Voyeurger) from Peter to his wife of 47 years Zena. On Something In My Brain, Perrett discusses good choices, bad choices and ultimately the only choices that will guarantee survival. There are also songs where Perrett opens his curtains and stares out into a much-changed world (Man Of Extremes, Sweet Endeavour). How The West Was Won finds Perrett with energy in his blood, rediscovering the importance of rock’n’roll. Having turned 65 over the weekend, he has a fire burning inside him again, and a determination not to blow what could be his last chance.

Second album Sunny Hills is released through Double Six / Domino and produced by Kwes (Solange, Kano, Loyle Carner). It finds the band with a new sense of urgency and a new sound - one that takes in psychedelia, krautrock and post-punk. Whilst political, Sunny Hills also documents the emotional rollercoaster the three-piece have been on in the past two years. Whether they got on at the last stop - the 4 track Tyneside-Trout-Mask-through a-Vic and Bob-filter of Nothing Important - or earlier in the journey, with The Glass Trunk’s visceral song cycle or The Magic Bridge’s sombre revels, devotees of his earlier recordings will be at once intrigued by and slightly fearful of the prospect of a record that could make those three landmark releases look like formative work. Peasant is that album. From its first beguilingly muted fanfare to its spectacular climax exploring a Dark Ages masseuse’s dangerous fascination with a mysterious artefact called the Pin of Quib, it will grab newcomers to Dawson’s work by the scruff of the neck and refuse to let them go until they have signed a pledge of life-long allegiance. Driven forward by exhilarating guitar flurries, Qawwali handclaps and bursts of choral ferocity, Peasant’s eleven tracks sustain a momentum worthy of the lyrics’ urgent subject matter. Dawson describes the themes of these songs as “Families struggling, families being broken up by circumstance, and - how do you keep it together? In the face of all of these horrors that life, or some system of life, is throwing at you?” The fact that these meticulously wrought narratives all unfold in the pre-mediaeval North Eastern kingdom of Bryneich - “any time from about 450AD to 780AD, after the withdrawal of the Roman Empire”- only makes their contemporary relevance more enduring and vital. Dawson’s objective was to create “A panorama of a society which is at odds with itself and has great sickness in it, and perhaps doesn’t take responsibility – blame going in all the wrong directions”. But encountering Peasant’s captivating sequence of occupational archetypes (Herald, Ogre, Weaver, Scientist), listeners might find themselves wondering if these multitudes could somehow be contained with one person - surely we all have a ‘Shapeshifter’ and a ‘Prostitute’ within us?
