‘It’s the Buzz, Cock’. Howard Devoto read this headline from a January 1976 Time Out review of ‘Rock Follies’, the 1970s TV musical drama following the ups and downs of the fictional female rock group, ‘Little Ladies’. Adapting and appropriating it as the name for his new band that he had just formed with Pete Shelley having realised what a Sex Pistol was before anyone else. Buzzcocks formed having witnessed firsthand the white-heat of the early Sex Pistols. Howard and Pete went about organising the now infamous 1976 Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs that brought punk to the provinces and galvanized the new Manchester music revolution. The plan was to simply play support to the Pistols and then see what happened next…Featuring the original line-up of Howard Devoto (vocals and songwriter), Pete Shelley (guitar and songwriter), Steve Diggle (bass guitar) and John Maher (drums), Time’s Up was recorded at Revolution Studios, Bramhall Lane Stockport on the 18th of October 1976. Adventures In Your Own Backyard was made at home after a grueling five-year run that saw Patrick and his band tour the world in support of two critically-acclaimed and successful albums, including the Polaris award-winning Close To Paradise. During this time, Patrick also contributed to Ma Fleur, the 2007 album from The Cinematic Orchestra, co-writing and singing on a sizeable portion of the record. In Patrick's own words, Adventures... is an effort on the band's part to "make the kind of music we would want to listen to at home." The album's title is an obvious nod to this. Shirley Collins – legendary folk singer and one of England’s most respected song collectors – returns to recording after 38 years. With the new album, Lodestar, Shirley has created the unlikeliest release of the century so far. Lodestar is a collection of English, American and Cajun songs dating from the 16th Century to the 1950s, recorded at Shirley’s home in Lewes by Stephen Thrower and Ossian Brown of Cyclobe and produced and musically directed by Ian Kearey. Weird World are delighted to introduce Los Angeles’ Alex Izenberg and his debut album, Harlequin, out November 18th 2016. Harlequin may be Izenberg's debut album proper but it also marks the culmination of over five years of highly prolific writing and recording under a variety of pseudonyms. Harlequin is almost a study in distraction - a restless, feverish dream-sequence which variously invokes Scott Walker’s obtuse, off-kilter worlds of sound, Simon and Garfunkel's psychedelic yet practical string arrangements, the vaudevillian pomp and preening of Wild Beast's early material and Grizzly Bear's pastoral early steps. All this is cut through with moments of total silence, patches of noise, found sound and countless dynamic left-turns and moment of non-sequitur. It sees the reclusive young artist marry a frightfully natural gift for naive and romantic melody with a wild sonic adventurousness born of a genuinely eccentric nature. The album is a colourful, imp-like fantasy of a record, full of concealed charm and mischief - the personalities of its strings, the horns and the echoes of the myriad rooms in which it was recorded all coming alive as supporting characters in its winding plot. Yet for all this complexity it is also still a deeply human and relatable record at its core. Very much a hometown record, it takes its cues from the way in which fiction and reality are at constant play in everyday life in a city unlike no other; setting simple, universal tales of love, loss, grief and confusion against the heat, haze, magic and madness of the Los Angeles of Izenberg's vivid imagination. The Magnetic Fields' 1999 magnum opus 69 Love Songs is getting a vinyl reissue - and it looks amazing. The deluxe box set will feature 6x10" discs, with a full-size, 24-page colour booklet, complete with liner notes from A Series Of Unfortunate Events' Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) including an "in-depth interview and a track-by-track with songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt." The record, which features 69 tracks, is described as "a celebration to the beauty, magic, humor, frustration, longing, and tenderness of the human condition." It was supposed to contain 100 tracks and be a "live musical revue", but was cut with Merritt feeling 100 was a bit long. Dinosaur Jr. bassist and lo-fi hero Lou Barlow returned to his solo career after a six-year furlough with last Septembers Brace the Wave. On October 28th, hell follow up on that effort with a new EP entitled Apocalypse Fetish via Joyful Noise Recordings. The five-track EP sees Barlow playing nothing but a ukulele, though he notes that the way he uses the instrument sounds more like a 4-string acoustic guitar utilizing strumming styles and lower toned soundscapes… Its a style thats clear and captivating on the first single, The Breeze. I stopped to catch my breath/ Realized I had less of it/ And the metal detection didnt work, he sings as the quiet track builds louder and more immediate. It was only last year that Shirley Collins celebrated her 80th Birthday in fine style which included an intimate gathering in the basement of Cecil Sharp House where she treated her gathered fans to song. Folk Radio UK were at this auspicious event which James McKinnon reviewed here. One thing that stuck with me from that review was this: When asked by compere and former English Folk Dance and Song Society Library Director Malcolm Taylor why she has chosen now to break her silence she mulls the question over for some time before concluding “Because I can’t give up. I’m still utterly enthralled by songs and I’m still learning new ones at 80.” Clearly, not a truer word said as Domino records have just announced that they are to release a new Shirley Collins album called Lodestar which will be released on 4th November. This release marks her return to recording after 38 years. The first track to be shared from Lodestar is ‘Cruel Lincoln’. Shirley explains the history of the song: “This is an ancient ballad, found only rarely in England. The theory is that Cruel Lincoln was a mason who was not paid for the work he did for ‘the Lord of the Manor’ and so extracted a terrible revenge”. Bugger Me' in Coome's own words is "Suicide meets The Beach Boys. Not the sophisticated 'Pet Sounds' Beach Boys, but more like 'Surfer Girl' stuff. More conscious reference points were Chris Montez or Timmy Thomas." He wanted to make "entertainment music, but entertainment music meant for those not served by more mainstream entertainment music. Maybe one might want to take a break from Sheer Hellish Miasma and enjoy some simple tunes that maybe speak to the same sense of the absurd, that likewise reject commercialism and market-based aesthetics, and even now and again pay a little homage to the raw synthesizer noise we have grown to love and even crave. Maybe timeworn themes such as love and war still resonate in the dusty backrooms of your mind (indeed maybe they are the only themes which do so)." Accompanied only by his organ and 'Conny' - a mid-'60s rhythm box (non-programmable, "not even really a drum machine"), Coomes made a conscious choice to pare things back. After moving to New York City in the mid-2000s, Hynes became Blood Orange, pluming the oeuvres of the city’s musical legends to create a singular style of urgent, delicate pop music. Freetown Sound, which follows 2011’s Coastal Grooves and 2013’s breakthrough Cupid Deluxe, builds upon everything Hynes has done as an artist, resulting in the most expansive artistic statement of his career.
