Длинная версия - масштабное драматическое произведение, в котором Чайковский соединил все свои качества симфониста, а также провидца звука и музыкального сказочника. В основе "Щелкунчика" лежит рождественская сказка композитора-романтика Э. Т. А. Гофмана, который создал произведение черного романтизма из истории об ожившей под елкой игрушке. Впервые поставленный в 1892 году, балет Чайковского считается вершиной балетной традиции знаменитого хореографа Мариуса Петипа.
