Taking their moniker from the notion of 'Liberation Upon Hearing In The Between' from the Tibetan Book Of The Dead, JOSEFIN ÖHRN + THE LIBERATION took little time to make their mark on the wider world, brandishing a radiant sound that stands effortlessly apart from the increasingly staid and often paradoxically predictable world of modern psychedelia. Having already been nominated for a Swedish Grammy with their debut EP, "Diamond Waves", their full-length 2015 debut on Rocket Recordings, "Horse Dance" marked out a territory in which beguiling repetition could sashay with sweet pop suss, melodic flourishes with experimental intensity, and it was summarily rapturously received on arrival and earning them appearances at Roskilde Festival and Eindhoven Psych Lab. Yet clearly this was only the beginning of a journey of discovery, and few would have guessed how the band's sound would quickly evolve into still more enchanting and enlightening strains. Their second effort "Mirage", which follows a mere year after its predecessor, sees the band sculpting sprawling, hypnotic jams into elegant nocturnal serenades. True to form, "Mirage" sees the band taking a chic tradition of avant-pop that extends all the way from Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy to Broadcast and Saint Etienne, and warping it mercilessly to their own darker ends. Whilst the brooding yet sultry "Sister Green Eyes" is no less than a sharp slice of velveteen motorik-pop and "Looking For You" reinvents three-chord garage-rock attack with mighty finesse, The Liberation are just as comfortable dealing out the heavy-lidded and electronically-driven "In Madrid' or the dive in the hallucinatory deep end of "Circular Motion', on which they're aided and abetted by Lay Llamas' Nicola Guinta. The seductive splendour of these ten songs manifest a parallel world of disorientation and deliverance in which one would be a fool not to want to languish adrift.

What could be better than a band from the UK being inspired by the NWoBHM? Monument is one of these bands and the main blueprint for their sound comes form Iron Maiden. The guys started 5 years ago and nowadays its' Peter Ellis (v), Lewis Stephens (g), Dan Baune (g), Dan Bate (b) and Giovanni Durst (d) that are the line-up of Monument. After having release a few singles ovee the last years, the five-piece published their debut "Renegardes" in 2014, followed by their sophomore longplayer "Hair of the Dog". As said, the quintet is very much inspired by Steve Harris and friends. I'm almost tempted to say that Monument is a copycat of the NWoBHM legend but that would only describe one facett of Monument. Twin guitars, a galloping bass and hard hitting drums are the main characterstics of Monument, all enriched by Ellis vocals, a singer that could be seen as Bruce Dickinson's small brother. Anyhow, "Hair of the Dogs" has to offer more. You might got the impression of "why should I listen to this and not to Maiden". The thing is, Monument sounds just great on "Hair of the Dogs". Each of the ten songs is highly entertaining, music that gives you a great time and that is pure joy for headbangers - old and young. After many years with modern metal, new metal, alternative metal and so on this album is a refreshing look back in time when metal started to grow and gain momentum. Monument keeps this spirit alive and adds a modern expression to it which dusts their sound. If you're looking for a dynamic modern oldschool metal album, then you found it here and now.

milo's so the flies don't come is wonderful, laidback California rap. But don't let the aesthetics fool you—he's a fierce lyricist with a killer sense of humor. A perfect album for weird days and off kilter listeners. Last year, milo (whose real name is Rory Ferreira) released his refreshing debut album, a toothpaste suburb, which delivered wisecracks with a straight face, matching sharp barbs into sequences and carefully squeezing in references to Harry Potter, Jean Genet, Clementine Hunter, Kant, and Kim Kardashian—and that was just the opener. milo has a deadpan he uses to serve up witticisms that often double as smart jokes (and sometimes crude ones). Not all of his bars are one-liners, but they are all connected to at least one tangentially. His latest album, so the flies don't come, is his most fascinating work to date, filling weird, side-winding productions that deflate and wheeze with tumbling lyricism delivered in near spoken word cadences. The project is entirely produced by electronic-leaning hip-hop producer Kenny Segal and the two have a real chemistry, with a shared inclination for the off-kilter and the oddball. Segal’s beats, synth-heavy abstractions that turn chords into cushions, make fitting soundbeds for milo’s staggered raps. Occasionally milo nestles into the sidewalls, like on "souvenir", and then quickly lurches out into pockets of dead space before retreating back. His blank, sometimes wooden demeanor is often betrayed by the snappiness of his writing, which somehow manages to capture Nietzche-esque nihilism with the comic simplicity of the shrugging emoticon. milo has a knack for using quips as a lens through which to stare into the void, but his greatest strength lies in his very particular way with words. Songs like "an encyclopedia" and "napping under the Echo Tree" tell stories in their own language, something milo himself seems to understand;
on the former, he opens, "No one taught me the language of rap song/ I was born speaking it." With such an innate understanding of rhythm and timing, it certainly sounds like it. His speech patterns vary, not so much abiding by the restraints of production as acknowledging them before ignoring them. When milo isn’t playing around with funny phonetic sounds or fidgeting with tricky taunts, he’s just making flat out great hip-hop. The song "going no place" proves he’s capable of adhering to conventional rap standards with compact verses. On the closer, "song about a raygunn (an ode to Driver)", he gives a critical reading of aesthetics, something like a thesis: "Parse good from the nonsense/ Never let the form dictate what's the content/ It's never art for art's sake/ Despite whatever the corpse of a Marxist thinks." He closes the thought—and the album, with, "I guess I'm stupid/ Following a rule is just too hard for me/ It's hardly me." But if there’s one thing milo isn’t, it’s dumb. It’s his inability to follow the rules that makes his music so smart.

The concept of "skate-rock" has been around for many years, but it has never been embodied as well as on Temples, the new album by Holy Serpent. While the band members are just casual skateboarders themselves, one might be tempted to think that skating has subtly influenced the band's sound. Not only in the elements of 70s hard rock crossed with punk values and energy. But, the music itself is like riding a skateboard: slow grooving passages can shift on a dime into fast thrill-ride riffs. There's an exhilarating freedom of movement and unpredictability to the sound. In the short time since their self-titled RidingEasy debut in mid-2015, Melbourne, Australia's Holy Serpent have gained a lot of attention for their rather punk version of heavy psych and metal. Fittingly, there's a strong vibe of early Soundgarden, Saint Vitus and Kyuss to Temples in that it's undeniably heavy, but also clever in its experimentation with subtle tempo shifts, multiple vocal effects and other production techniques. But it's still more Sabotage than Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Temples is heavier in tone than the first album, and also more sonically rich and aggressive. The 5-song, 44-minute album finds vocalist/guitarist Scott Penberthy, guitarist Nick Donoughue, bassist Dave Bartlett and drummer Danny Leo (new drummer Lance Leembrugen has replaced Leo since recording to complete the live lineup) expanding the hooks while simultaneously taking listeners on a rigorous ride. "We've found playing slow all the time got a tad boring so we've mixed it up a bit with tempo changes and added more parts to each song to make them sort of flow like a story," Penberthy says. "The challenge was making sure it still flowed as it should. 'All killer no filler' was a bit of a motto this time around when writing the songs." Album opener "Purification by Fire" emerges slowly from a primordial swamp of a reversed gong crash, synth swells, guitar feedback and lightly plucked bass notes before it all coalesces into a driving but slow-burn riff that spans the length of the fretboard as the drum patterns also subtly shift and slide underneath. It's a brilliant effect, albeit one you might miss if you're not paying attention. "Bury Me Standing" launches full throttle with a raging guitar solo over a driving riff/rhythm before a quick about-face into a march as Penberthy's effect-soaked vocals wail above the proceedings. The song builds slowly upon its elements until Penberthy howls an impassioned plea, "bury me standing, I will not forgive you." Album centerpiece "Toward the Sands" further pushes the tempo changes and sonic experimentation to great effect as the song effortlessly turns on a dime from fast rager to doom, while all sounding cohesive and melodically infectious. Album closer "Sativan Harvest" is an epic nearly 12-minute multi-part journey, built around a central blues motif that drifts into a massive haze of droning guitars set to fat rhythm pickup tone as it swells then recedes, only to restructure into a mutated version of the original motif that eventually abruptly ends with violin, cello and synths in a slow fade into the ether.

The inarguably mongrel Housebound Demigod is G.H.’s debut solo album, following the Ground EP (2011) and his involvement with the hexed Pendle Coven project & HATE, alongside Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, respectively, between 2003 - 2009. It sounds like nothing out there;
the result of countless hours at the grindstone, using sound as tonal therapy and a purely expressive sculptural material to best render the feel of his bleak but extraordinarily beautiful surroundings with all the rugged texture and captivating aesthetic of some ancient cave graffiti. The album unfolds as a treacherous topography of boggy drones, entrenched subbass and deforested, windswept feedback, strewn with the charred remains of black metal in opener Screaming Demon Pickups and the hollow-eyed stare down of Angels & Doormen, or prone to bury the senses with unpredictable slow techno mudslides in Mickey Cosmos or the subsidence of Packhorse. He often underlines that physicality with a drily ambiguous wit;
check the bitterly clipped narrative on Yorkshire Fog, or, equally, when he puts all his weight behind the stylus-troubling, bestial shudder of Devils Bit Scabious, and you can’t shake the feeling that he’s gurning like an evil loon behind the rotten torque of the album’s titular parting shot. While ostensibly monotone, overcast, the devil is found in the album’s subtleties of timing and mixing detail;
riddled with phantasms that lurk and lash out from the crevices of its granite slabs and pitch black ravines, all placed at oblique angles in his surreally folded, labyrinthine and unheimlich soundfield...
