Previously unreleased studio recordings from 1986. LP Includes digital download code. The slow-burn sounds of Sonic Youth's 1986 rehearsals to score Ken Friedman's spooky highway film Made In USA are yet another mile marker in the band's long and varied existence, now being issued as Spinhead Sessions (named for the North Hollywood studio used by SST label acts like Black Flag and Painted Willie). These jams were later built upon for a full-on (and quite different) soundtrack production, but the rough sketches here find the band taking time with truly new and introspective sound worlds. It was basically a brand new way of working for Sonic Youth, albeit a challenging one, under the auspices of major Hollywood film production overlords, routing their way into the world of soundtrack scoring. And it all comes at a key time and place. It's no secret that 1986 was a transformative year for the band in many ways. The gravitation to the beloved SST stable, in addition to Steve Shelley, now drumming, certainly gave Sonic Youth a renewed vigor and vocabulary. They were already an international touring machine, and gaining considerable steam with critics (even spinning the heads of detractors who had dismissed their arty downtown boho sensibilities prior to '86's EVOL). Their cultdom with fans had concrete roots by this point, and the influences that were swarming in the band's orbit marked an exciting time, where almost any trajectory seemed possible, and they were going for it. Friedman's film worked on a relatively darker frame for a mainstream Hollywood flick;
characters played by stars Chris Penn and Adrian Pasdar made a cross-country journey that started out in Centralia, Pennsylvania, a real-life, anthracite coal producing town that had to relocate all its residents due to a decades-long, inextinguishable underground fire. The Sonics passed through this haunted-looking locale on their next tour after the sessions, and are pictured on the sleeve standing amidst smoldering embers. For the sounds they made at Spinhead, this image seems a fitting mental picture. Guitar harmonics billow like smoke, heavily reverbed drumming and shimmering cymbals echo from what sounds like the bottom of a deep mine. This newly born Spinhead Sessions release once again defines Sonic Youth in a raw and engaging state of discovery at a terrific time. Is it a missing link between the complex, crafted cavernosity of EVOL and the frayedelectric powerline sizzle of Sister? Yes and no. It's an entirely unique animal, a meditative album where you can soak in the template of tapping overtones, sedate explorations of new chords, even sounding at times like AMM trying to play the VU's Sweet Sister Ray bootleg or something similar. It's trademark Sonic Youth at the core, and in an unfettered, dreamy state and time, there and gone like smoke. -Brian Turner, WFMU Music Director.

Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare are simply known all around the world as Sly & Robbie, the Rhythm Twins. Continuing the sporadic reissue programme of Colin Potter's legendary, home recorded cassette releases from 1980-1982. "Scythe", expanded from the initial 1981 ICR cassette releases to a double LP with all manner of out-takes, alternate and demo versions, creating a killer set for all enthusiasts of Colin's work as a member of NWW and collaborator with the likes of Organum, Current 93 and Ora and so on. Here are some notes from Colin himself: "The tracks on this album were recorded in the late seventies and early eighties. Side 1, Trk.1 to Side 3, Trk.2 were originally released as 'The Scythe' on cassette, the second release by ICR. 'Nightshift' is taken from the ICR/Aeroplane cassette 'Chainsaw'. The rest of the tracks are early or alternate versions and remixes. Most of the damage was done by myself using guitars, synths, sequencers, drum machines, percussion and modified toy keyboards with fairly primitive 4-track recording equipment."

Experimental pop duo Plaitum have announced their second EP "Jagwa". The pair - Abi Dersiley and Matt Canham - released their self-titled debut EP last year, and signed to super-producer Paul Epworth's impressive Wolf Tone label. The multi-instrumentalists have started work on their eagerly anticipated debut record - and this is a preview of what to expect. Speaking about its creation, Canham says: "Most of the Jagwa EP was written in my bedroom over a weekend. We took loads of Pro Plus and stayed up for three days writing. The songs got weirder the longer we were awake - at one point Abi just played a really loud droney noise for about half an hour on my microKORG and we both thought it was amazing. I listened back the next day and it was just white noise." Dersiley adds: "The EP gets progressively darker and sludgier. Unlike our debut EP, which was more or less psycho happy mayhem, we definitely wanted this one to more deliberate, less a frenzied crime of passion and more like a carefully formulated assassination.”

deep in sound and light. Imagine the music of Sigur Ros, or James Blake, or Aphex Twin, but travelling somewhere else instead. As you do, pay attention as your eyes and ears adjust: open up, come alive. Over the past few years, Phoria have become known for their colourful, visually evocative soundscapes with the release of two EP’s: 2013’s ‘Bloodworks’ and 2014’s ‘Display’. Top 5’s on Hype Machine, support from BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music followed – along with millions of Spotify streams. Now, they’re proud to announce their highly anticipated debut album ‘Volition’, out 3rd June on X Novo Records. Phoria are headed up by the master of electronics and composition Trewin Howard, a deeply sensitive character in tune with his surroundings, empowered with synaesthesia and once afflicted with a mysterious - still undiagnosed - illness that left his senses frayed and mind on edge. Ironically, when this illness ebbed, it left behind an even more heightened auditory perception. He is joined by two friends he has known all his life (guitarist Jeb Hardwick, piano/synth player Ed Sanderson) and two others (drummer Seryn Burden and bass/synth player Tim Douglas), who he feels he has known forever. Phoria start to make sense with this strong backbone and incredible bond in place. At one point, they stopped trying to be a conventional band and started to be something else;
they decided to be applied technicians in a self-created sonic laboratory named Phoria. The new album ‘Volition’ is bursting with vibrant sounds throughout, from opener ‘Melatonin’s electronic washes to ‘Emanate’s organic clicks and claps, to the epic string section finale on ‘Yourself Still’, which brings a colourful parade to end the record. Phoria's songs aren't what you'd call conventional. Trewin never wanted to be a storyteller - he says he subscribes to the model of saying very little to say a lot. ‘Red’ is inspired by a conversation Trewin had with someone about lying to people, while ‘Evolve’ is a mash-up of ideas about evolution and the future of society. The other songs on ‘Volition’ take in various themes in the form of: love, art, science, the way people touch and change and move each other, sex, mortality, scale, insignificance, morality, pain, joy, fear, obscurity, the surreal, the absurd, and beauty. The lyrics usually come out in one recording, altogether, and they feel whole, multi-dimensional, and real. Phoria are a full multi-sensory experience in every way. Jeb does installations and interactive projections for the group’s live set. How strange it is that this group were called Phoria before Trewin's world was recast and reshaped - focusing on the importance of the senses, and how they can travel in different directions, in the first place. Phoria have always had a heart and pulse and soul behind them, and long may it shine: an epic core of friendship played out, played loud, deep in sound and light.

After participation in the production and/or remixes of songs by various hip hop and R&B artists in the late 1980s to early 1990s, the duo signed to Elektra Records. All Souled Out was as a warm up to their debut album, Mecca And The Soul Brother. Pete Rock's unmatched production sound is already in place, fullyformed, drenched in obscure soul music samples and rumbling, cavernous bass. Characterized by his trademark sonic signature, muted and phased trumpet, and flute loops, the songs sound regal with endless depth. Of course, C.L. Smooth's lyrics have just as much to do with that regal quality. Standouts include both versions of "Good Life," the irresistible "Go With the Flow," and the anthemic title track, with rapid-fire rhyming from Smooth and a perfectly funky organ riff, but the whole EP is essential

More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding's version of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December. "Otis Redding Sings Soul" is considered by many critics to be Redding's first great album. Recorded in April and July of 1965, it was released September 15th of that same year. The styles of Cooke and Redding couldn't have been more different;
Cooke smooth and sure, Redding raw and pleading. But Redding's versions of "Shake" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" show how Cooke's sound and message helped shape Redding's Southern soul sound. Redding's singing reaches a new level of expressiveness with this as well as with covers of B.B. King's "Rock Me Baby" and the Motown hit "My Girl". This is pretty wonderful... Last year, filmmaker Oliva Wyatt invited Bitchin Bajas to add incidental music to the climatic sounds of her feature-length experimental documentary on the nomadic Moken people, ‘Sailing A Sinking Sea’. This new album release packages the soundtrack LP with a DVD of the film, thus opening several windows to the eternal questions posed on both formats and providing two distinct pieces of art coming from the same source. ‘Sailing A Sinking Sea’ is a feature-length experimental documentary exploring the culture of the Moken people of Burma and Thailand. The Moken are a seafaring community and one of the smallest ethnic minority groups in Asia, traditionally spending eight months out of the year in thatch-roofed wooden boats. Wholly reliant upon the sea, their entire belief system revolves around water. ‘Sailing A Sinking Sea’ weaves a visual and aural tapestry of Moken mythologies and present-day practices. As a viewer you will swim under the sea past fishes and mermaids, sail boats across turquoise waters, land on 13 different islands, step inside sea shanties on stilts, delve into the minds of shamans, become possessed through the worship of sea gods, dance between lovers and emerge drenched in Moken mythology. Bitchin Bajas were tapped to add to the already-existing raft of water sounds and other field recordings captured in the film. They were shown scenes and with subtle directions from Wyatt, laid down music in the vibe of the environment, making particularly satisfying use of auto-harps in the process. Mark McNeill at Dublab provided a mix compiling film sounds and soundtrack pieces that gave the album an aquatic flow, with waves of water, Moken voices and songs and cascades of autoharp, synth, bells and flute lapping up against each other, producing a sense of time passing in its ultimate way - somehow timelessly;
today twined with the epic tale of history and the million forgotten days stretching behind. The sound of the real intermingling with the music of the mind provides a hypnotic, album-length interpolation of the energies of ‘Sinking A Sailing Sea’s incredible images. Executively produced by Will Oldham, ‘Sinking A Sailing Sea’ was premiered at SXSW in the 2015 Visions Catgory and it went on to receive its international premiere at Hot Docs. It has gone on to be shown a number of festivals including Margaret Mead, BFI London and the Singapore International Film Fest, where it recently won the Audience Choice award. Olivia Wyatt is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer based in Los Angeles. She is a member of the Sublime Frequencies film and music collective. She has directed, produced, shot and edited three feature-length documentaries, ‘Staring Into The Sun’ (2011), ‘The Pierced Heart & The Machete’ (2013) and ailing A Sinking Sea(2015). She has a series of shorts out alongside a vinyl LP by Bitchin Bajas called Vibraquatic (2012) and was one of the creators of the film ‘Below The Brain’ (2011). Her work has screened at SXSW, Hot Docs, Maysles Cinema, Flaherty NYC at Tribeca 92Y, Anthology Film Archives, BAM, Third Man Records, All Tomorrow’s Parties, The Milano Film Festival, The Barbican Museum and The Museum of Jurassic Technology. Her work has been highlighted by the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, BBC, Indie Wire and VICE. Since 2010 Bitchin Bajas have released records on Important, Permanent, Bathetic, Kallestri Editions, Hands In The Dark and Drag City. They have played their music all over the world. Their most recent release is a collaborative album with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Epic Jammers and Fortunate Little Ditties.

Necro Deathmort have created a monster, and it's both a malevolent and magical thing to behold. This two-man aural manifestation came to life towards the end of the last decade, starting originally in the words of co-conspirator Matthew Rozeik "as an abortive attempt to do a egular' rock band, born from jamming in studio downtime when our drummer was AWOL" Drawing on influences ranging from Ed Rush & Optical to Old Man Gloom and from Autechre to Neurosis, he remembers that the unspoken objective for himself and cohort AJ Cookson was "to make electronic music that was as heavy as doom metal, with absolutely filthy bass." Following ten releases on Distraction and Extreme Ultimate, The Capsule marks the band's first for Rocket Recordings, and it's a step yet further into the terrifying vacuum of space. Opener 'In Waves' maps out rhythmic terrain somewhere amidst krautrock groove and techno relentlessness, it's not long before matters take a turn into the unearthly, with dreamlike extrapolations like 'Mono/Serum' - redolent of nothing so much as Mica Levi's otherworldly soundtrack to Under The Skin - sharing space with the threatening momentum of the more overtly metallic 'Moonstar'. Yet at all times The Capsule is a work of fierce cohesion and compelling intensity. Whilst there may be three words for death in this band's initially playful name, Necro Deathmort have proven themselves well versed in infinite varieties of the macabre.

The second remix single for Moderat’s album "III" continues to prove the bands impeccable taste for club music. Both KiNK and Shed deliver absolute dance floor bangers. This record will make a lot of DJs’ lives much easier but also make it painfully hard to chose which one to drop in their sets. As each remix takes on the signature synth hook of "Running". Bulgarian producer KiNK pairs it with a deep bass line and a buoyant house groove. His clever amalgamation of the leitmotif is so twisted, it´s hard to analyse at which point the original actually shifts into something else. The whole thing happens so organically, one could be tricked into thinking this was the original. His pure producer - craftsmanship yields a notoriously smooth track designed to win over 2016’s summer festivals. Untouched by any deliberate purposes for his production Shed decides to bring in the kick right at the beginning of the track, shuffling hi-hats on top of a slightly distorted pad and a brooding bass. His stomping techno embeds Moderat’s synth line in a stoic beat that won’t compromise its deadly simplicity. An absolute secret weapon for the peak time, this record will bring back Moderat to the clubs they hailed from. Big time.

Running can be a form of stress relief. It helps to clear the mind, catalyze emotions and refuel. It can even cause a rush of energy and make you high on endorphins. It is in these ways very similar to dancing. What sets both apart is the collective experience. While the former is rather seldom associated with groups, the latter almost always is. Moderat’s 2nd single "Running" has quite a unifying effect to it. It blends the isolated voice of melancholy with the collective excitement of a night at a summer festival. Their music is for the main stage: a highly emotive kind of pop, which is built to dance, but never simple. The sonic palette of “Running” spans intricate percussions, cascading, yet overtly recognisable synths, a driving kick drum and a whole lot of feel-good vibes. The rhythms are as compelling as they are deadly effective. At the same time the lyrics address feelings of impotence and powerlessness in a hyper-capitalist world, where each individual isn´t striving for anything anymore but just repeats mechanisms that are out of its power to control: "Running is about being part of a mass. A mass that constantly needs to move to function, but one that's not deciding directions by itself." (Sascha Ring) In its endeavouring balance of self esteem and subtlety, the brightness of synth pop and the moodiness of UK house, this song will recharge your batteries much like a perfect workout. Its emotional juxtaposition emits a grandeur, seen seldom in current pop music. It depicts the torn feelings of today’s youth and is another fine example of how Moderat manage to unite the two worlds of the energy and the hedonism of the club and the thoughtfulness and delicate instrumentation of leftfield pop music. If "Running" leans towards the latter, “90% Wasser” the exclusive B-side of the EP, bows deeply to the undercurrent of contemporary UK club music. In this brooding track with it´s big dubstep claps, the lyrics are reduced to a distant humming, reminding one´s self not to get lost in escapism but to immerse in the present.

Karachi Files unites musicians from Pakistan, the Maldives and Germany In May 2015, an assortment of electronic musicians from Pakistan, the Maldives and Germany followed the footsteps of brothers Hannes and Andi Teichmann, otherwise known as Gebrüder Teichmann, the Forever South crew and the Goethe-Institut to meet in Karachi;
Pakistan's industrial capital, harbored on the Arabian Sea. A house was remolded into a temporary recording studio. It would become a place to meet, inspire and be inspired, record, play, eat and sometimes sleep. Musicians, together with a photographer convened, and the outcome of two weeks would transpire into the Karachi Files. Karachi Files, a textural collection of electronic fused works is a me´lange of different cultural, immersed in a fixed space, of which predestined inspiration was taken from its surroundings. The corpulent body of work harmonizes a balance in the elements, delivering a variety of tracks, from electronic club music to electro acoustic experiments, particularly textured including a few more slowmo and raw. Following the African European Ten Cities project and it ´s album release on Soundway in 2014, Karachi Files will be the first release on the Teichmann brother’s new label Noland.

Throughout history, human evolution has leaped forward and has always been preceded by a dark period in time. We are now once again on the verge of a new day. So is the concept of HEAVEN'S CRY's 4th full length album, Outcast, produced by the band along with Yannick St-Amand. Due out on Prosthetic Records on June 3rd, 2016, the album continues where 2012's Wheels of Impermanence left off, pushing them to the forefront of today's modern progressive metal scene. The Montreal progressive band was formed in the early 1990s and released two albums over the course of coming decade;
both received high praise all across the globe. They appeared at various progressive festivals in both North America and Europe and supported bands like Marillion, Saga, and Threshold, among many others in the progressive rock world. Following a 7 year hiatus where some of the members focused on other bands, Heaven's Cry reformed and signed to Prosthetic. In 2012 they released the aforementioned Wheels of Impermanence and continued playing shows and festivals worldwide. Then at the start of 2015, they began work on what would become their finest offering to date. Outcast kicks off with the infections, riff heavy, The Human Factor. It's these hooks from guitarists Eric Jarrin (of metal pioneers, Despised Icon) and Pierre St. Jean (who contributes vocals as well) that has set them apart from their prog metal contemporaries. The Human Factor also stands out as it features a selection from one of American activist, Noam Chomsky, speeches. Auclair explains how this came about: "Pierre introduced me to Noam Chomsky's work in the early 2000s. So when came time to dress up that two-minute instrumental part in "The Human Factor", Noam's 1970 "Government in the Future" lecture was a perfect fit". The album then moves on into the crescendoing title track before going into the epic 14 minute plus The Day The System Failed, which is divided into 4 parts, paying homage to some of their greatest inspirations: Dream Theater and their Canadian brethren in Rush. The album then slows down in mood and closes out with Alive, another riff filled track that offers change and hope, though telling it must come from within us all
