Indie rock pioneers Sebadoh have announced the release of their first new LP in 14 years, entitled “Defend Yourself.” Ending a substantial hiatus for the band, “Defend Yourself” is more of an organic reformation than a comeback album. In the words of Lou Barlow, “We were always going to make another record. There was never any point where we looked at each other and said, ‘That’s it. We’re done.’ We never actually quit at all - we’ve been making music this whole time.” Barlow, Loewenstein, and D’Amico haven’t wasted their musical talent over the last several years (as evidenced by solo albums, Dinosaur Jr., Fiery Furnaces, Folk Implosion, etc.), however, the Sebadoh name hasn’t surfaced since 1999. Historically speaking, Sebadoh albums have paralleled momentous experiences in Barlow’s life-- and this recording is no different. “Defend Yourself” is saturated with songs of heartache relating to the divorce from his wife and partner of 25 years. According to Barlow, “Your greatest victories and your most crushing defeats have a tendency to give birth to one other.” The new album also marks a return to the self-recorded DIY ethos of early Sebadoh albums (“Sebadoh III”, “Bakesale,” etc.). A handful of sour experiences with major labels led Sebadoh to self-record and self-produce their new album. “We did ‘Defend Yourself’ the only way it could have been done: on the cheap and all by ourselves,” Barlow states. Though this is hardly the band’s first experience with home recording, technological advances beyond the 4-track cassette have allowed “Defend Yourself” to easily rank among Sebadoh’s most sonically-engaging albums to date.

Austin's own Reckless Kelly return with their 8th studio album, "Long Night Moon" (No Big Deal Records) on September 3, 2013. The album is the follow-up to 2011's Grammy Nominated "Good Luck & True Love," which took home four Lone Star Music Awards, and sent three singles to #1 on Texas Radio. Produced by band members Willy & Cody Braun, along with lead guitarist David Abeyta, Long Night Moon was mixed by Ray Kennedy (Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris), and features additional instrumentation from legendary steel guitar plyaer Lloyd Maines, as well as Bukka Allen (piano, organ) and Jeff Plankenhor (dobro). Working singles from the album include "The Last Goodbye" (August 2013), "The Girl I Knew," and "Be My Friend (In Real Life)." In addition to the CD and digital versions of the album, a limited edition, 180-gram audiophile vinyl pressing will be released as a two-record set. Reckless Kelly has spent seventeen years cementing their place in the Americana/Roots Rock genre. The group is known for their explosive live shows and a passion for making albums of substance. Long Night Moon is no exception to this rule.

The LP will come out on Belgian imprint Music Man Records, which released Dundov's first two albums: 2008's Escapements and last year's Ideas From The Pond. The latter LP was described by RA's Daniel Petry as "unapologetically melodic techno ... full of detail and tiny motions." This new album was produced in Dundov's Neumatik studio in Zagreb, where he also works as a sound engineer. According to a press release, Sailing Off The Grid further showcases the producer's signature sound, and "invokes the spirit of classic ambient and synth-based music of decades gone by." It will be released across CD and vinyl formats.

Mary Black's 1989 "No Frontiers" is nothing short of a masterpiece. This (and the follow up 1991's "Babes In The Wood", Pure Pleasure PPAN002) was when Black was at her creative and vocal peak. "No Frontiers" (the song) has become something of an Irish classic, a party piece for so many (even the Corrs covered it on "Unplugged") and "Past The Point Of Rescue" was a massive country hit in 1991 for Hal Ketchum. Both songs are superb and Black's versions are the greatest. "Carolina Rua" and "Vanities" (featured on the huge selling "A Woman's Heart") are well known but it is the darker "Columbus" and the mesmerizing "Fat Valley Of Pain" that showcase both the heartbreak and the depth of the album. A fine introduction to Black's music - the right mixture of folk and contemporary and one of the finest albums to come out of Ireland in the 1980s. Recording: 1989 by Dan Fitzgerald. Louisiana Red (born Iverson Minter) was a flamboyant guitarist, harmonica player, and vocalist. He lost his parents early in life through multiple tragedies;
his mother died of pneumonia a week after his birth, and his father was lynched by the Klu Klux Klan when he was five. Red began recording for Chess in 1949, then joined the Army. After his discharge, he played with John Lee Hooker in Detroit for almost two years in the late '50s, and continued through the '60s and '70s with recording sessions for a number of labels. Louisiana Red moved to Hanover, Germany in 1981, and maintained a busy recording and performing schedule through the subsequent decades into the new millennium. He died in Germany in 2012 when his thyroid imbalance brought on a stroke. Recorded in New York with Tommy Tucker, "Lowdown Back Porch Blues" is Louisiana Red's first album and, in many ways, it's his best. Supported by a bare-bones rhythm section, Red plays a number or traditional tunes and originals. His guitar is nearly as powerful and overwhelming as his vocals, making this a truly compelling listen. Recording: 1963 in New York City. Production: Henry Glove

JOHN WIZARDS are a band from Cape Town, South Africa. They've written one of the most singular and intriguing records of the year, and one of the loveliest to boot. Since John Withers and Emmanuel Nzaramba first met, the duo have grown into a band and have recorded an album that gently but persuasively gets under your skin, through the strength of its beautiful melodies and strong, smart arrangements. It's a brilliant combination of African music, R&B and chamber pop, filtered through gentle electronic arrangements that cross-pollinate with South African house, Shangaan Electro and dub. Opener "Tet Lek Schrempf" starts things off with a gentle waltz before crashing in with a flighty mix of conch shell, handclaps and pitched-up guitar riffing. Next up "Lusaka by Night" charms you with its catchy highlife riffs and spacious pools of electronics, while Emmanuel's auto-tuned voice flutters atop the mix. "Limpop" is a tribute to Shangaan Electro, in which skittering drum machines and synth bass dissolves into the lush funk of "Muizenberg", all highlife guitars and muscular riffy bass, breaking down into John's soft falsetto and piano. "iYongwe" is based around joyful, lovable deconstructed 80's funk-pop chords, while "Finally" breaks out from a ambient haze, into the choppy, detailed techno-like dub and rolling guitar riff of "Jet Up". "Maria" is sung by Emmanuel in Kinyarwanda, a heartfelt love song to the girl of the title, with a happy recorder melody. "Jabu Ley" is a richly constructed ballad, with a touch of 80's pop and nostalgic melody, while "Jamieo" opens in bombastic R&B mode, rich with Rhodes chords, rhythm guitar and brass, but its seriousness is undermined by the parping bassline and daft lyrics. "LEUK", slows things down to a shape-shifting mix of R&B and pulsing post rock repetition. Twisting once again, "Durvs" is essentially a house track with its highlife guitar sounding like it's routed through early British techno. "I'm Still A Serious Guy" tells the story of how the song almost didn't come about, while "Lushoto" opens with thumb piano and guitar, breaking into John's vocals and a galloping melody. The album finishes on the gentle "Friend" making a nod to Mali's meditative music.

Jarboe (also known as Jane Jarboe, and the Living Jarboe) is an American singer-songwriter and keyboardist who came to prominence in the mid-1980s with the New York City-based group Swans. Having played the organ since childhood and had years of professional vocal training, she, with founder Michael Gira, were the two constant members of Swans until the group broke up in 1998. Although she was absent from the group's lineup when the band reformed in 2010, she contributed background vocals and voice collage for the band's 2012 album, The Seer.[2] She has released numerous solo albums and collaborations, many of which have been self-published. She also co-composed the soundtrack of a horror game titled The Path. Indemnity is an album of interpretations of classics from Swans and World Of Skin selected from Jarboe albums Indemnity I & 2.

And: New Newcastle supergroup featuring Mike Vest (Drunk In Hell, Bong, Master Slave,Ramesses, Basillica, Obey, etc), Jerome Smith (Female Borstal) and Sam Booth (Fooot Hair, Obey). Phew! Haikai No Ku play some of the most morose, damaged blues psych we've heard in years: death-toll bass and crashing drums lead the way for a solitary guitar line obliterated by total psychedelic guitar scree. Songs start off as loose jams that slowly build up to utter brain-melting acid psychedelia. Early Ramleh gone deathrock?

3LP Triple Gatefold Sleeve! To source the material, we approached Matt Valentine (Tower Recordings/MV & EE) as we knew he was both a big Neil fan and had the key ¶apers Pit' city. He got back to us right away and told us he was on it and, within about a week, he'd mailed us a data CD with a note marked, owdy Nick, here's a whole lotta booty. You GOTTA credit Jim Hildreth.' There were seven performances on the disc captured from six shows and over eight hours of material. Hildreth, we learned, is a notorious NYC taper who's turned up to practically every weirdo show in town armed with a pair of binaural mics and a digital recording device and, after Matt put out the appeal, he'd replied to say he had these shows recorded from over a ten-year period, most of the shit being from the first half of the '00s with the exception of one show recorded in 2010, and was more than happy to donate them. We took a listen. Sound quality wise, the stuff varied as mics were placed in different spots at each show so there was no real consistency there, but what did come through were the performances. Long, drawn-out solos with intensely applied wah from 2001/2002. Relentless, insanely extended repetitions of All Night Fox riffs from 2005. Cabaret-style medleys with paradoxically slapdash precision from 2010. All incredible and, on top of all that, ready themed by the fact of its source: these were "The Hildreth Tapes". We set about the lengthy process of mastering it with our man P.C. in a tiny flat in South Manchester in the winter of 2012. The result is this 3xLP set, which features typically gorgeous, gatefold artwork by the venerable Lucy Jones. The sound quality has been homogenised to the best of our capability to give smoothness of flow to the sequencing (we decided not to present the material in chronological order, rather in order of vibe - this is just what felt right) and the required kick-up-arse where mic placement had failed to do so. And we think we've managed to get it sounding pretty sweet. We're delighted, too, that Jim Hildreth is getting some credit for his years of efforts in the name of preservation.

Ginkgo is the new project from Tapes 'n Tapes singer and songwriter, Josh Grier. Manopause, Ginkgo's debut record, was written, recorded, produced, and played by Grier. Jeremy Hanson, Tapes 'n Tapes' drummer, adds live and programmed drums. "Manopause was 33 years in the making. The first 31 years I spent in pre-production. The last two years I spent writing, recording, playing, in solitude, in a basement, on a lake, unemployed, at home, with friends, feeling old and straight wingin' it," says Grier. "Manopause is a musical time capsule to my future self, so I remember to chill out, enjoy life, and let my freak flag fly." While the subject matter may be deep and introspective, Manopause moves with an upbeat, visceral energy. It bounces from the futuristic and fiery, ear glue of "Faded Glory" to the driving,fist pumping, heart break of "Ride It Out". "Moped Song" is breezy like a summer day, while "Bitte Meddler" floats freely until finally exploding in anthemic slop. Grier's introduction to the world was in 2005 with Tapes 'n Tapes' critically acclaimed debut The Loon, which would eventually be re-released by XL Recordings in 2006.
