This Swearing At Motorists effort towers heads and squirrels above whatever that was you were just listening to." - Camden Joy Swearing At Motorists has come a long way since it's birth as a poster for a fake band in 1994. A few months after the posters mysteriously appeared in record stores & music venues around Dayton, Ohio, Dave Doughman jokingly scrawled the name on a cassette of home recordings that he gave to friends, and the band was officially born. The late '90s found Swearing At Motorists releasing a slew of 7" EPs on different labels, and after getting repeated plays from John Peel and favorable press worldwide, the band landed a contract with the then new label Secretly Canadian. They released 2 EPs & 4 LPs on SC, including 2000's "Number Seven Uptown" and 2002's "This Flag Signals Goodbye", both of which were named MOJO Magazine's "Underground Album of the Year" the years they were released. Swearing At Motorists relocated to Berlin, Germany in 2005, releasing their last LP for Secretly Canadian, "Last Night Becomes This Morning" the following year before quietly disappearing into the never-ending Berlin night... 8 years later, the band has resurfaced in Hamburg, Germany, with a new album titled "While Laughing, The Joker Tells The Truth", to be released on Anton Newcombe's label A Recordings Ltd. Co-produced by Dave and Rick McPhail (of the legendery German band Tocotronic), the album tells the tales of those "lost" 8 years in classic Swearing At Motorists style. Digipak. "PAN & ME is the solo project of musician and curator Christophe Mevel, known as one of the founding members of dark-jazz collective THE DALE COOPER QUARTET & THE DICTAPHONES. His debut "Paal" was recorded back in 2010 while being on a boat trip along Unalaska island and has been released worldwide via Denovali Records in 2012. With Pan & Me Christophe Mevel continues the intelligent song writing of the Dale Cooper Quartet with a different approach - the arrangements are not jazz-orientated like those he creates with the other Dale musicians on their three classics 'Parole de Navarre', 'Metamanoir' and 'Quatorze Pièces de Menace'. His influences are coming from all over the map. The debut "Paal" was rather piano- and electronic-driven referring to artists in the likes of Oval, Wim Mertens or Angelo Badalamenti. His forthcoming second full length called ""Ocean noise"" is an intense and highly diverse collection of material ranging from ambient, guitar drones, vocals, field recordings and synth sounds in a much wider orchestration including piano, strings and percussion, forming a Vinyl double album set to be released in September 2014. For ""Ocean noise"" Christophe Mevel created a musical journey with the attempt of being listened as one extensive piece. This experience should only be interrupted by flipping the record in order to continue following the route of this single man leading us in a vast landscape, where repetitive melodies of an organic sound are established drawing our attention away from hectic routines. Tidal waves of long synth tunes are rising up in choirs and ebb away exposing a lonely setting on the edge of nature, where observations of all kinds of narratives seem to start. Quickly fading into pulsing guitar drones taking over the second half of the record, ""Ocean noise"" ends with mysterious vocals and footsteps to rewind of what has been left behind. Christophe Mevel offers a display of memorable melodic songwriting with a deep sense for ever changing atmospheres and complex in their use of overlapping instrumentation and extended techniques. The experimental and detail orientated methods remind of his work with The Dale Cooper Quartet, but his imaginery soundscapes thrive from a single inimitable artistic vision. MindMaze are a promising band like no other. The group's sophomore album Back from the Edge is now set for an October 2014 release through Sweden's Inner Wound Recordings. Despite nearly unanimous praise for the songwriting on Mask of Lies, chief songwriter Jeff Teets has strived harder than ever to craft amazing songs filled with first-class musicianship, memorable hooks, and powerful melodies and riffs. The new album sees the band moving further towards forging a strong identity rather than borrowing little bits and pieces from all over their map of influences. The forthcoming album showcases a variety of guest musicians that are all friends of the band in one way or another. Bass-playing duties have been taken over by veteran Symphony X bassist Mike LePond whose impressive skills bring another powerful weapon to the table. Legendary Stratovarius keyboardist Jens Johansson lends an expectedly awesome solo and harmony to the progressively-tinged "Moment of Flight", while Pharaoh guitarist Matt Johnsen offers an inventive solo to the 10-minute epic entitled "The Machine Stops". I’d write drum parts with it then add music with the synthesizer or the guitar.” The album grew organically from these synthetic roots, taking in Mark’s ongoing love of Krautrock and also an ’80s new wave show on Sirius satellite radio, his favoured aural companion as he drives around Los Angeles. “They have a few good shows but the ‘80s one in particular I like,” he says. “That’s the music that was happening when I started making music. And although the Trees drew on Nuggets psychedelia, 13th Floor Elevators and Love, we were actually listening to Echo And The Bunnymen, Rain Parade, the Gun Club. A lot of British post-punk. We loved that stuff. I just waited until I was in my late forties before I started ripping it off.” Lanegan’s generous collaborative spirit sees him deliver an excellent co-write with British guitarist Duke Garwood, with whom he made last year’s dustbowl-desolate Black Pudding, and who now offers the music for I Am The Wolf, a Lanegan signature tune. Write a fistful of cool songs, recruit the right musicians, practice a lot, make a great single, get a van and wait for the phone to ring. That's the old formula which all "would-be-somebodys" in this business continue to use. But it always seems to fail at some point, usually the phone ringing part. But The Limboos worked this strategy perfectly. Within months, and only on the merit of one single, the band has garnered tremendous reviews, turning the road into their home and the scene into their office.
