Swans release a remastered reissue of their ninth studio album, The Great Annihilator, on Mute / Young God Records. The Great Annihilator, originally released in 1995 and described at the time as “…a majestic symphony of haunting melodies and shifting moods” [SF Bay Guardian], is released on double vinyl and as a 2CD set. Both the vinyl (in the form of a download code) and CD feature Drainland, Michael Gira’s debut solo album recorded at the same time as The Great Annihilator. The album was entirely remastered by Doug Henderson, but only after Bill Rieflin (“honorary Swan“ a revelation of great sonic effect”. Talking about the recording, Gira said “I lived in a tent in a mosquito infested studio right next to Cabrini Green in Chicago for what (?) something like 3 months, rarely leaving. Band members and Jarboe and Bill Rieflin etc came and went, and somehow we crafted this thing into what it became.” The Great Annihilator line up features: Michael Gira, Jarboe, Bill Rieflin, Algis. The controversial music video featuring a Muppet on a real party binge was picked up by the likes of TeamRock (Classic Rock magazine), Visions Magazine and Gaffa Magazine. The band has also been seen this winter in an episode of SVT's and Canal+'s TV series "Midnattssol" on National television in Sweden and France Satan Takes A Holiday became the talk of the town when they released their self-titled debut album late 2009. They have been on several tours with bands such as Mustasch, Juliette Lewis and Imperial State Electric and was also playing as opening act for KISS on Friends Arena in front of 30 000 people. The follow-up to the L.A.-based songwriter’s 2014 debut (also a self-titled effort), Los Angeles Police Department delivers homespun bedroom pop driven by confessional lyrics and beautifully downhearted melodies. “My favorite records are the ones that make me feel like I’m getting to know an artist,” says Pollie. “I love albums that sound like someone is telling me their deepest secrets.” Produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado (Whitney, The Lemon Twigs) and mixed by Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Foo Fighters), Los Angeles Police Department combines the melodic gambits of Randy Newman with the pop clarity of Paul McCartney, the fanciful ingenuity of Brian Wilson with the narrative acuity of Pete Townshend. Not only a creatively adventurous effort full of inventive flourishes, the album also daringly addresses suicide and addiction, anxiety and bereavement. “I think of this record as a coming-of-age story,” Pollie says. “You always think of coming-of-age stories as something that happens to kids, something like Stand By Me or Catcher in the Rye, but in my twenties I realized that I was always going to face this vulnerability and this anxiety. I’m never going to be that wise old person who’s cold-hearted and knows everything. So this record is about learning to face up to those fears and be emotionally responsible.” Newly signed to ANTI-, Los Angeles Police Department had a surprise hit in 2014 with “She Came Through (Again),” a bittersweet pop gem featured on his first full-length.
