Drummer Magnus Öström, a member of the world famous Esbjörn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.), is set to release his third solo album ‘Parachute on April 1st 2016. The new album features the same band members as the two previous albums with guitarist Andreas Hourdakis, bassist and keyboardist Thobias Gabrielson and pianist Daniel Karlsson. Twenty years have passed since the hugely successful and critically acclaimed album ‘E.S.T. Plays Monk was released. ‘Parachute comprises eight original compositions by Magnus and also features Norwegian trumpeter Mathias Eick who guests on ‘The Shore Of Unsure. Although Magnus' solo career has been successful, the loss of Esbjörn Svensson in a tragic diving accident has been devastating. Music has helped him overcome some very dark times. Expressing his feelings Öström said, During the years after Esbjörns death I have struggled to find my way back to life. Sometimes life has been ok, but at other times it has been really dark. As for most of us, life has its ups and downs, but when I have been at my lowest, when you don't see any way out, the music has always been there to save me, it has been my Parachute. This record is a celebration of music itself and to the energy it carries. It has helped not only me, but also most of the people on this tormented globe that we travel on. Herman Poole Blount, better known to the world as Sun Ra, lived more musical lives in his 79 years on this planet (and others) than seems possible. In the 30s he was the most rigorous bandleader in Birmingham, heading the Sonny Blount Orchestra and filling every waking moment with music or philosophical discussions, by the 40s he had moved to Chicago and performed with luminaries such as Wynonie Harris, Fletcher Henderson, and Coleman Hawkins. By the 50s he had changed his name to Sun Ra and began performing with longtime Arkestra bandmates John Gilmore and Marshall Allen. Ra started his own label, El Saturn (or Saturn), to release his own recordings as well as those featuring the Arkestra backing local R&B and doo-wop groups. Though the genres showcased here are more pop than the world has come to expect from Sun Ra, the vibe and feel is purely cosmic, producing some of the wildest, strangest R&B ever created on this side of the sun. Having played with Gary Burton, Jaco Pastorius, and other leading fusion musicians, the prodigious Pat Metheny made his solo recording debut in 1976. The following year he released Watercolors, marking the start of his long collaboration with pianist Lyle Mays. That summer they played various dates (together with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb). The superb tracks featured here include material from Watercolors and the Pat Metheny Group album (which would be released in 1978), and were originally broadcast on KJAZ-FM. The complete broadcast is presented here in digitally remastered sound with background notes and images. Limited to 300 copies. Inspired by Weather Report, the profilic Finnish jazz master Seppo "Paroni" Paakkunainen formed Unisono in 1973. The lineup consisted of some of the most talented guys around: Paakkunainen on sax and flute, Reiska Laine on drums, Make Lievonen on bass, Hasse Walli on guitar and Olli Ahvenlahti on piano. After a successful tour of Poland, Finnlevy's new progressive rock imprint Hi-Hat offered a deal, which resulted in this self-titled album in 1975. At this point Walli and Lievonen had left the ranks, and Unisono decided to continue without guitar. Bass duties were handled by Pekka Pohjola, who had just called it a day in Wigwam. The album gained the group quite a bit of attention, but as Ahvenlahti and Paakkunainen soon left to study abroad, Unisono was abandoned and these 5 lengthy tracks remain their entire studio legacy. Today criminally underrated and forgotten album sounds as fresh as ever and remains an excellent piece of evidence of the quality of Finnish jazz in the 70s Record Label: Svart Records Style: Jazz
