Septuagenarian bassist Ron Carter is now a Guinness World Record holder for most session credits on his instrument, surpassing the previous honoree Milt Hinton in September of last year. Carter’s ubiquity has been long-standing across a nearly sixty-year career and as such his presence on trumpeter Jeremy Pelt’s seventh venture for the HighNote imprint hardly warrants surprise. What does merit mention is how well the veteran player meshes with Pelt’s specific designs. Excepting its slightly suspect title, #Jiveculture delivers an experience opposite the intimations of its social media-savvy shorthand. Pelt’s intentions apparently centered on an earlier, positive-leaning vernacular of the term. Pelt parses the album into two parts, each comprises four pieces. Deviating from some of his earlier efforts, the band on hand is lean and largely acoustic with regular pianist Danny Grissett switching to Fender Rhodes only on the Pelt-penned, Janus-faced “Rhapsody” late in the program. Percussionist Lisette Santiago guests on the same track, but otherwise the studio date relies on a quartet configuration with prolific drummer Billy Drummond completing the roster. The instrumentation echoes Herbie Hancock’s classic Empyrean Isles on Blue Note, which coincidentally Carter also handled bass duties on a half-century ago. The opener “Baswald’s Place” clears the band’s palate, making pithy introductions of the players and a swift colloquy between the leader and Drummond within the terse span of three minutes and change. Carter’s “Einbahnstrasse” communicates his flirtations with chamber forms and offers up the first of several bass solos that show the skill built from a sessionography that numbers in the thousands. Cole Porter’s “Dream Dancing” and the Dave Grusin-scripted ballad “A Love Like Ours” each celebrate the easy equilibrium between Pelt and the rhythm section and feature divergent statements from the former that revel in the supple and sonorous properties of his horn. Four Pelt compositions comprise the album’s second half starting with the sliding, sequenced challenges of “The Haunting”, which commences as melodic feature for Drummond sans band. Working over a destabilized waltz tempo Pelt proffers another improvisation, this time almost plangent in its urgency. It’s emotive territory he also mines effectively on the fleet-paced closer “Desire”, which accesses stylistic acreage closest to the aforementioned Hancock album. “Akua” recalibrates the ensemble to a transparent, delicate vamp structure with Carter once again serving as viscous, but elastic glue in connecting the component parts. Questions as to whether the Pelt/Carter partnership will carry over to future sessions are left hanging, but based on the sturdy results herein the value in such a reconvening seems a foregone conclusio Record Label: High Note Style: Jazz

Here is the latest offering by Latin Jazz great Bill O’Connell, making his fourth release for the Savant label. Always one to seek out new ways to express his music vision, the pianist has throughout his career embraced a broad stylistic swath of jazz, Latin and Brazilian idioms while experimenting with an equally diverse orchestral formats, from a duo to unconventional trio settings and ensembles of various sizes. His well-known resume includes long stints as keyboardist and arranger for the legendary Cuban conguero Mongo Santamaria and Puerto Rican flautist Dave Valentín as well as engagements with a diverse array of jazz and Latin artists, from saxophonists Sonny Rollins and Gato Barbieri to trumpeters Chet Baker and Jerry Gonzalez. Here Bll is joined by his acclaimed group The Latin Jazz All-Stars, featuring Conrad Herwig, Steve Slagle and Cuban percussion great Roman Diaz. Originally released in Turkey 1973, Özkent's masterpiece (creation) of an all instrumental Turkish Psychedelic Funk album, filled with classic beats and breaks still inspires long time fans and first time listeners. The funky rhythms, hypnotic percussions, and heavy break beats makes this a holy grail amongst DJ's and music fans alike. Only a handful of copies from the original pressing are known to still exist making this reissue a welcome addition to any record collection. The concept is very complicated, futuristic and free from categorization. Traditional folk songs mixed with rock, jazz, blues, funk and psych. Özkent took traditional turkish folk songs and reconstructed them for the new "hip" generation. It was recorded live in just one day with some of the best studio musicians in Turkey. The band was made up of 2 drummers, 2 guitarists, 2 percussionists, a bassist and a Hammond B3 organist. Özkent created his own unique guitar sound by adding extra frets and a clutch of effect pedals in order to create quarter notes and emulate turkish traditional scales. Mustafa Özkent has since made arrangements for hundreds of other artists in Turkey. But this unique album documents his most revered work. Originally released on Otavan Kirjalliset Äänilevyt (a book publisher) in 1967, the album has since then only seen a very limited CD reissue in the 90s, and has been increasingly expensive to locate on vinyl. The Svart LP reissue has been compiled with full co-operation by Koivistoinen and retains the original gatefold layout, and also features a booklet with photos and liner notes. Valtakunta is a concept album, loosely speaking. The songs of the album are by contemporary Finnish poets - Pentti Saarikoski, Tuomas Anhava, Hannu Mäkelä and Jarkko Laine. Vocalists appearing on the album are Vesa-Matti Loiri, Seija Simola and Eero Raittinen. All compositions are by Koivistoinen himself Record Label: Svart Records Style: Jazz
