Do you remember a time before the words "dance" and "rock" were linked by a hyphen and the synthesized sounds of the '80s were a regular part of the modern musical landscape? The members of The Faint do, because they were there when it started to happen. In fact, you could even say they're one of the main reasons it happened at all. Saddle Creek is set to reissue one of the crown jewels of the movement, an album that over time has proven to be as influential as it is exhilarating: The Faint's third album, 2001's Danse Macabre. It all seems like a natural progression now, but the release of Danse Macabre's predecessor, 1999's Blank-Wave Arcade, was a sea change for the Omaha group, showcasing a fondness for dance beats and dark keyboards while completely moving away from the indie-rock songs found on its debut, 1998's Media. Seeking a unique sound was becoming a regular occurrence in Omaha at the time, which led to a slew of phenomenal local releases, including Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning and Cursive's The Ugly Organ. The nine-song Danse sizzled with perfectly aggressive synth lines, Todd Fink's menacingly effected vocals, infectious beats, bits of industrial and goth, and, at the heart of it all, strong songwriting featuring the kind of minor-key melodies that make singing along inevitable. To top it off, upstart engineer and producer Mike Mogis perfectly captured The Faint's sound and attitude despite never previously working on an electronic record Record Label: Saddle Creek Style: Rock

By fine-tuning a mix of sweet pop rock and determined guitar chops on their second album, Busting Visions, Zeus has become more focused and, in turn, more enjoyable; this is the one that’ll bring the band’s sound into its own. You can’t call their brand of rock heavy and hard so much as energetic and ear-grabbing. Brewing cavalier pop with hushed funk, Zeus at times emulates both French pop-rock masterminds Phoenix and the less alt-country iterations of Blitzen Trapper with their fun class of jumpy rock. The Toronto foursome’s slight classic rock tendencies, previously courted on their debut, Say Us, to adequate results, become strengths here. On “Hello Tender Love” – one of the jewels of the album, channeling the now-defunct NY funk band Julius C – the band pumps a powerful, soul-dripping chorus through an excellent transition into the McCartney-like playhouse affair of “Messenger’s Way”. This isn’t nearly the only clever moment on the record, but it sure sticks with you the most. Recalling songs like the laid-back “The Renegade” from 2010, the pleading “Let It Go, Don’t Let It Go” echoes the bittersweet melancholy of Steely Dan’s saddest lyrical moments, and “Proud and Beautiful” is another brief softie with a tender swagger. The band’s earnest attitude makes for eclectic instrumentation that never offends but only knocks you off your feet if you’re truly paying attention. Overall, elements like harlequin piano chords, guitars imitating kazoos, and click-clack percussion could have been embroidered to greater detail. The more outward moments on Busting Visions, such as opener “Are You Gonna Waste My Time?” and “With Eyes Closed”, recall groovy, romantic joy from decades ago, and on “Cool Blue (And the Things You Do)”, Rob Drake, Mike O’Brien, Neil Quinn, and Carlin Nicholson play as a more theatrical, spaced-out Spoon, with lingering jazz harmonies, vocal grit, and resounding bell chimes. Keeping up with this boldness and experimentation could yield future material worthy of Mount Olympus. Record Label: So Recordings Style: Rock

Packing a "vintage vibe" immediately apparent in Jeremy's painterly stroke, "Bend In The Road" fuses his artistry as consummate slide guitarist, singer, songwriter, interpreter, illustrator - man of the world. His evocative watercolor graces the gatefold cover recalling enduring albums when records were the sum of their parts and made with consequence. Within is a correspondingly crafted collection of songs coming from the deepest core of his heart. It's an intimate journey, but one that will connect deeply and repeatedly with listeners. He sounds as authentically fiery and tasty as he ever did, but displaying a far wider guitar palette, insight and conviction that have continued to evolve since his long absence from the public eye. In Fleetwood Mac, Jeremy shared the spotlight with reticent star-super nova, Peter Green, embodying Elmore James riffs and vocals obsessively and uncannily. He possessed an equal fervor and absolute command of quintessential rock n' roll personifying personal hero Buddy Holly and his ilk spot on. "Bend In The Road" is an upshot of being asked to consider working with compatible younger musicians to produce modern material. And yes, he had considered it. From the seed of idea came such an encounter with beyond-his-years accomplished guitarist and blues aficionado, Brett Lucas, who coincidentally fronted a Fleetwood Mac cover band, "Rattlesnake Shake". In Brett, Jeremy found a schooled simpatico player analogous in both musical understanding and gentlemanly humility - virtues not readily in vogue that resonated profoundly. The Detroit quintet sessions provided a perfect storm association, wildly prolific generating 32 tracks! Jeremy's Elmore ("Cry For Me Baby", "Stranger Blues", "The Sun Is Shining"), Buddy and compatriots' influences ("Earthquake", "I Walked a Mile in Sorrow") impeccable blues and rock rendering remain intact and vibrant, but so is a collaborative nature selflessly trading guitar licks and support with Lucas (playfully on "Jambo", epically on "Aphrodite") in the way Green and Kirwan shared on the torching "Like It This Way" and iconic "Albatross". With "Homesick", J.S. gets to fulfill a 45-year old desire to record the author's signature song that opens the album. On the album's elegant "Merciful Sea", Producer Brett manages to persuade Jeremy to reveal his hereto unsung, intimate affecting piano playing for all to marvel. Throughout one can hear an expansive range of influences from Django to Knopfler and Jeremy plays them effortlessly and seamlessly incorporating and making them his own as naturally an easy fit as that of his beloved ceramic slides. Multi-instrumentalist and sci-fi prog-rock explorer A.E. Paterra returns with his second proper fulllength as Majeure. Following closely on the heels of his beloved but scarcely limited split album with fellow Zombi cohort Steve Moore, Solar Maximum expands on the cinematic, atmospheric vision alluded by his 2010 debut album, Timespan. Once again composing, performing, and producing the entire album, Paterra broadens the Majeure cosmos with an increased focus on moody synths and an almost inhuman level of patience in the payoff. Drawing influence from 70s celestial film scores, ambient krautrock, and dexterous vintage prog-rock, Solar Maximum trades in the cosmic disco of Timespan for a more spacious and ominous feel that lives up to its ambiguously ambitious title. Mad Monk is John Terrill, original member of the late '70s new/no wave Dancing Cigarettes and veteran of many stripped down Hoosier groups since. As an ace singer/songwriter and eternal student of rock n roll's high/gulcher culture, he's kept a criminally low profile snug in the Midwest despite drawing attention from songwriter Bill Fay and other major/minor music heads. This platter lines up the Monk's two newest biographical orchestrations -- and a Velvet Underground bootleg favorite -- with the freakbeat backup of Apache Dropout -- fresh off their Trouble In Mind album. In blasted proto-style the Monk takes on his past ("My Wild Life"), drink of choice ("Double Shot of Brandy") and a tune that bridges Apache Dropout's boogie and avant-garde notions ("I'm Not a Young Man Anymore"). John The Conqueror's self-titled debut album is an amalgamation of the many sounds and styles (old and new) mined from both the North and the South. Cousins Pierre Moore (vocals & guitar) and Michael Gardner (drums) are natives of Jackson, MS, while bassist Ryan Lynn hails from Philly - where the trio now call home. Together they mix a bedrock of raw deep blues with funk, soul, punk and scuzzed-up rock-n-roll into one helluva potent musical Molotov cocktail. What makes John The Conqueror so refreshing, however, is their honest, simple, yet extremely passionate approach to their music. Moore and Gardner have been playing together in bands since their college days in Oxford, MS, and Moore learned to play guitar in his early teens from a homeless man who slept in the back room of an auto repair shop. Groan play stoner doomy rock, I don’t know if it would be fair to call them metal but they will be liked primarily by metal crowd – you know the drill we have seen that situation many times in our music world. It should be said that the lyrics on “The Divine Right of Kings” are dealing with such arcane topics as execution of Charles I and Middle Ages in general, that well of inspiration is unending source of inspiration for bands of all brands and it seems that such well cannot be dried as Groan among other prove with their craft. The music on “The Divine Right of Kings” goes through various moods, from up-tempo rock to slow wicked parts and everything is led by high charismatic vocals that are employed to grab the vibe Groan were clearly after. For the inspiration of Groan find the answer simply in the name of the track “How Black was Our Sabbath” – yes, the forefathers of metal can be felt through and through “The Divine Right of Kings” which is not weird at all as this sound stems from their root anyway. All in all, “The Divine Right of Kings” is not some groundbreaking record but its feel good mood and cool composition can clearly appeal to all the fans of the genre so they are well advised to check this one out.
