Somnus Throne would seem to be a project for an era of working remotely, with members spread throughout multiple cities, and though their origins are murky, that's nothing compared to their riffs. They come big and slow on the band's self-titled debut, topped with samples and a free-your-mind lumber that's thoroughly genre-based and it knows it. With members spread out across New Orleans, Los Angeles, Portland and San Antonio, Somnus Throne is a new heavy and psychedelic doom band that pays homage to legends such as Sleep, High On Fire and Pentagram. The band's self-titled debut album is now set for release on October 9 via Burning World Records and sees Somnus Throne playing some Sabbath-tinged, mammoth-size and hypnotic doom riffs across five epic tracks. Each riff is so spine-asphyxiating heavy as if they possess the power to create a seismic tremor in the walls of your houses. Somnus Throne proves that the music Black Sabbath birthed decades ago can still hit hard and sound engaging after all these years.

Dutch doom legends-turned-stoner rock riff-makers Celestial Season have reformed, and are on the eve of releasing the official follow-up to 1995 gem Solar Lovers via Burning World Records. Indeed, new album, The Secret Teachings, finds the Nijmegen-based septet reuniting with members from the "doom era," meaning debut album Forever Scarlet Passion and Solar Lovers, without guitarist Robert Ruiters and violinist Maaike Aarts. But what Celestial Season fans get is an updated lineup-Olly Smits moves over from bass to guitar and Elianne Anemaat joins on cello-but with Stefan Ruiters (vocals), Jason Köhnen (drums), Lucas van Slegtenhorst (bass), and Pim van Zanen (guitars) leading the front end. Says Jason Köhnen: "25 years after the release of our classic Solar Lovers album we are incredibly proud to present you our forthcoming new album The Secret Teachings appearing on Burning World Records. Remastered from original 1993 studio tapes by James Plotkin in 2020 - New artwork by Jason Kohnen in 2020 - Part of the CELESTIAL SEASON Doom Era box set that also includes the re-issue of Solar Lovers and new album The Secret Teachings. With Forever Scarlet Passion, we see a string-heavy Celestial Season expounding on the bombastic murk of My Dying Bride. Whereas the UK five-piece more or less roped their atmospheric mantras off to certain songs and only those songs, CS wisely disintegrate tracks' borders and stretch the instrument across just about the entire album. For that, we get a less boxy, song-by-song feel and more of a prolonged, harmonious saga of crushing woe that would be more washed out and incomplete if not for Edith Mathot's ever-present bow work and Sylvester Piyel's (the spinner of the 7"'s violin web) occasional keyboard trappings. Without taking kudos away from the five main bodies of the group whose talent of bending rhythms into the shape of teardrops is obvious, I'm willing to admit my glassy-eyed fascination for one weepy neck-held gadget and say it's the belly of this type of recording. Should it leave, this nine-songer would be akin to a less death-minded My Dying Bride or Anathema's more bare bones, but emotive material.

What's so lovely about Dungeon Synth from the Netherlands, is how it covers quite a thematic region. You have your edgy, basement-dwelling, blackened thematics, you have forefather-honoring dreamscapes, there are playful releases about curious turtles and - of course - there's Vetus Supulcrum, delivering its unique combination of serenity and bombast. Vetus Supulcrum has been around since February 2019 and steadily released quality material in a short timeframe. Some of you might know its creator, M. de Jong, through his other works. Gnaw Their Tongues has had a kvlt-following for years now and - my personal favorite - Seirom has attracted a much broader audience with its soothing ambient/drone-like releases. It feels good to have such a seasoned musician enter the scene - and it suffices to say that Windswept Canyons Of Thule delivers the quality you might expect

35007 is the code name for a projectile with a unique sound. Ranging from firm grooves drenched in multiple layers of sound and hypnotic riffs to flowing soundscapes. A fine combination of past and future in influences and technique. This sound has been captured on the very well-received albums "Especially for You" - 1994 (remastered and rereleased in '99) and "35007" - 1997, released exactly 50 years after Chuck Yeager's first sonic boom. These albums contain instrumental as well as tracks with vocals. The 10" / CDM "Sea of Tranquillity" - 2001, marked the appearance of 35007 MARK IV as well as the shift to even more hypnotic instrumental terrain. It goes beyond the conventional rock formula and astonished critics and audience. It was followed in 2002 by the fully instrumental sound track "Liquid", which continued to expand the boundaries of their sonic universe. The album contains 4 voluminous tracks which take the listener on a surprising and sometimes unexpected journey. On the latest release, "Phase V", 35007 continue the fully instrumental journey, this time leading into more abstract terrain, led by the roman philosopher Boethius (480-526) who stated that "music is mathematics made audible". With the digit 5 hovering predominantly, the album is about numbers and sounds. No words, no images. The new album has already been nicknamed "songs for the blind", appropriately "visualized" by the minimal and sensuous artwork. Without the benefit of vision, the ears seem to work much better. Phase V is an intermediate state. No physical manifestation is to be expected in the foreseeable future, only time will tell what the next phase will be.
