Following on from last year's "Nebula Dance" album, ITAL TEK comes with a 25 minute EP that frees itself from easy catagorisation. Of course the 160bpm cross-pollination of footwork and drum & bass is the jump off point, but "Control" is sophisticated and dense sci-fi music that flexes your senses. "Fireflies" opens proceedings with floaty but viciously warping choral tones over rough, rolling Apache drums. The title track, "Control" with its punchy squashed kicks and rolling claps, swaps between Detroit chords and tough drum workouts. Next up, "Zero" is a rich and cinematic ambient interlude whilst the final track on side A, "Violet" is reminscent of ART OF NOISE's "Moments in Love", but given a hi-gloss rerub, before the shortened notes of the melody break into strange glottal shapes, with drums striking strange patterns around them. "Challenger Deep" opens side B with trancey spiralling synth arppegios that are almost too intense to take in, until soft chords and a steady drum form a cushion underneath, shaping the track into some intensely futuristic trap music. "Ultra" is a synapse snapping 808 trap track with jittering double time drums rich chords and sci-fi bleeps. "Jupiter Ascent" seems to update 4HERO at their most prog sounding, mixing in all manner of organ sounds, rolling toms and vocal noises with timestretched jungle breaks. Final track "Doom/Dream" is a glistening virtual paradise, an uneasy ambient comedown from the rush that just preceeded it.

MIRACLE's debut album is a collaboration between two artists with a rich history in music you wouldn't immediately associate with Mercury. DANIEL O'SULLIVAN has played and sung in bands such as ULVER, MOTHLITE, GRUMBLING FUR and GUAPO, while STEVE MOORE has recorded as half of the Italian soundtrack inspired synth band ZOMBI, and on dance labels such as Kompakt and more recently L.I.E.S. In fact it was on a GUAPO/ZOMBI tour in 2006 they first met, with the music starting to trickle out slowly around 2010. Initially the music was intended as an instrumental dance project, however the project started to take on a life of its own when Daniel started to add vocals and lyrics. The music on "Mercury" is definitely cosmic, but not oversimplified or facile. There are anthemic power ballads on there but it also has an unstable tension and is rich in atmosphere, with songs at times pulling on Moore's love for the grainy fog of Italian horror soundtracks, plus the lyrics have an almost occult introspection, troubled, elliptical sentiments animated by choral rounds and harmonies. Maybe it was the length of time it took to make, but each song sounds like a chapter, with a unique mood. The collage begins with the tender and devotional "Good Love". A euphoric twist in theme beckons synthpop fireworks with "Something Is Wrong", while "Automatic And Visible" channels 80's synth funk sass into something stranger. "Falling Into The Night" is pure 80's soundtrack pop, while "Neverending Arc" drops away into shadowy territory, pumping arpeggios and tense, airy synths. The mid point of the album is the sleepless, early morning bliss of "Mercury", crossing huge, beautiful chords with scattershot beats and rising tones, Daniel's stream of imagery pouring out over the top. "Breathless" takes the mood downwards again, like an ugly mutation between Metallica and early Prince, with a sense of exhaustion to match. "Wild Nights" finds its sense of optimism and resolve. The final drift is towards a warm resolution and spiritual uplift, with "Organon" a blissful drone over elegant beats, moog, bells and chanting, where all the tension dissolves into deep satisfaction

The connection became so good in this period that the duo developed a fluent understanding of how each other worked, ending up as a project made across the internet, while Henry was living in France and Richard in LA. They cross pollinated by developing what each did best, Henry making and creating banks of samples and Richard creating software and effects to cut up and re-sample, passing the tracks back and forth, essentially until they felt finished. The music here is quite different from what either of the artists are previously known for. Henry used to record as SHITMAT making fidgety jungle and Richard has recorded as BURNKANE. The music here initially sounds more simplistic, its tempo pulled down to a head nod speed. At times the album gives the impression of a kind of futureprimitive take on Trap;
rusted and distorted 808 claps and bass drums collide with exotic percussion and mangled industrial clangs, reminiscent of more recent industrial takes on techno such as Pete Swanson's music. It's a thoroughly unique soundworld that stretches from the 4/4 kick of "Dusco" to the Brazillian percussion meets trap triplets of "Drizzle". "Dank" is made of exhausted and aggressively distorted hip hop, while "Drowning" has an ambient feeling to it, leading into "Dilute"s pockmarked abstraction. "Death" is mercilessly overloaded and fever-sick, while "D'Mmmm" works with just a looped sample and plodding processed 808s, following on are "Demonoid" which stretches cymbals and drums into strange shimmering shapes and the brainwipe of "Damiana"'s fierce oppressive squelch

"iYongwe" is based around joyful, lovable deconstructed 80's funk-pop chords, while "Finally" breaks out from a ambient haze, into the choppy, detailed techno-like dub and rolling guitar riff of "Jet Up". "Maria" is sung by Emmanuel in Kinyarwanda, a heartfelt love song to the girl of the title, with a happy recorder melody. "Jabu Ley" is a richly constructed ballad, with a touch of 80's pop and nostalgic melody, while "Jamieo" opens in bombastic R&B mode, rich with Rhodes chords, rhythm guitar and brass, but its seriousness is undermined by the parping bassline and daft lyrics. "LEUK", slows things down to a shape-shifting mix of R&B and pulsing post rock repetition. Twisting once again, "Durvs" is essentially a house track with its highlife guitar sounding like it's routed through early British techno. "I'm Still A Serious Guy" tells the story of how the song almost didn't come about, while "Lushoto" opens with thumb piano and guitar, breaking into John's vocals and a galloping melody. The album finishes on the gentle "Friend" making a nod to Mali's meditative music.

Earlier this year, to celebrate 20 years of µ-ZIQ and Planet Mu's 300th release, Mike Paradinas, owner of Planet Mu prepared this carefully compiled album charting unreleased productions from the start of his career in the early nineties. Curated by his wife and partner in the band HETEROTIC, Lara Rix-Martin, the twelve tracks on this album run the gamut of his various styles from the placid, evocative ambient rhodes of "Air" to the syncopated industrial techno of "Toy Gun #2" and lots more inbetween. The album opens with the woozy yet elegant counterpoint of 1993's "Jewel Tea" which swiftly descends into distorted HR-16 drum machine chaos. "Vinxel" switches to a more stately mood with its woodblock bassline and measured 4/4 pulse keeping pace with one of those patent µ-ZIQ melodies you'd swear you've heard somewhere before. Both "Trail Quest" and "Spooky Tooth" continue in this melodic vein until the aforementioned "Air" slows it all down with a much needed breather. The second half of the album goes into darker territory with the detuned mandolin and piano of "Str06" duelling it out with its low-slung hip hop beat. "Diala" sustains the reverb drenched mood while adding a sweeter edge as a synth line makes an appearance straight out of his 1993 album "Tango N'Vectif'". 1995's "Airto" brings some Marimba pierced dark cut-up jungle and the album finally starts to settle down with the Peel Session tracks "Johnson's Q-Fab" and the classic "Green Lanes".

Mike Paradinas has been a pioneer and a mainstay of the electronic music scene for over 20 years now and "Chewed Corners" is his first proper solo album since 2007. As the boss of electronic label Planet Mu, he's always been at the forefront of innovations and has released music by some of the most celebrated modern electronic artists around. The album was written in the same period as Mike's recent Heterotic project while he was home alone. Mike says he intended the compositions to evoke drama and emotion and while the music was made with no conscious influences, after listening back Mike says KUEDO, APHEX TWIN, CHICAGO FOOTWORK, ART OF NOISE, ORBITAL, JAPAN and RUSTIE must all have had an effect. While his last album, 2007's "Duntisbourne Abbots Soulmate Devastation Technique", was at times as harrowing and miserable as its title suggests, "Chewed Corners" is almost the polar opposite, relaxed, self-possessed, and a pleasure to listen to. The innovation is subtle and inviting and it exudes happiness. It also foregrounds probably one of Mike's most important characteristics - something that has always shone through his far-reaching experimentation and kept it sounding both personal and accessible - his knack for great melody and lush arrangements. "Chewed Corners" sidesteps affiliations to any genre;
instead it's a suite of 14 retro-futurist tracks, created with a lush, analogue sounding palette.

Mike Paradinas' µ-ZIQ solo project has been quiet for a while. However, with "XTEP", he makes a welcome return from hiatus and gives us a gentle taster for a forthcoming brand new µ-Ziq album due this summer. In stark contrast to a large percentage of his previous work, XTEP is joyous all the way through. The five compositions abandon the quest for cutting-edge exploration exchanging it for an altogether more carefree fun approach, with only the footwork-influenced "Monj2" directly referencing any current electronic influences, however even on Monj2, the vintage sound palette dominates. Opening with the gorgeous "XT";
a smudged piano/moog melody recalls the abandon of 70s pop melodies before the composition falls out into airy arpeggiated funk with splashy drums. "Ritm" debuts with ravey piano and whistling synths, condensing early dance music tropes into a gauzy bitter-sweet haze. "Pulsar" is a perfect tribute to late 70s electronic cosmic space-disco, gently nudged towards more modern dancefloors with pulsing electronics racing above robust kicks. "New Bimple" succinctly uses a short space of time, woody, swinging 2-step drums and downcast piano melody, to bring the EP to a conclusion on a sadder, unresolved note.

Many cite RP BOO as the originator of footwork music, and it's hard to argue, when the scrambled, syncopated drum patterns common to footwork can be largely traced back to him. RP BOO's music is singular and unusual in Footwork, featuring raps and dialogue adopted from Juke, often in combination with sharp-edged and incidental samples giving some tracks a paranoid atmosphere. Take "187 Homicide"'s bleak feeling and question and answer vocals, "Area 72"'s alien landing scenario or "Speaker's R-4"'s audio walk-through. His music is often hectic, seemingly built to almost psyche-out the listener or offer challenges to dancers;
it's this playful and imaginative quality, along with his sometimes baffling-but-it-works rhythms and sub, that give RP BOO's tracks their totally unique feel.
