A real sense of drama is a thread that runs through SOLAR BEARS' music, "Supermigration", their second album following 2010's critically lauded "She Was Coloured In" is full of all kinds of drama - from the intimate to the psychedelic, from the chase to the suppression. This time it's been taken to a new level in all kinds of ways. "Supermigration" is the result of a year and a half of on/off studio time in a state-of-the-art studio in the Wicklow Mountains (a far cry from the bedroom studio where they produced their debut). Compositions were road tested through a steady stream of live performances that saw John and Rían expanding SOLAR BEARS from a duo into a full-scale band featuring members of I AM THE COSMOS, JAPE, SHIPS, GREAT LAKES MYSTERY and special custom visuals. And let's not overlook the two vocal-led highlights of the album featuring special guest appearances from Sarah P of KEEP SHELLY IN ATHENS and the legendary Beth Hirsch (whose work here recalls her appearance on AIR's "Moon Safari"). "Supermigration" is clearly telling us that despite the strong acclaim around their debut, this Ireland-based duo was simply warming up. John rightly notes "It's fair to say we listen to a lot of music from decades gone but we get inspired far more from spontaneity in the studio." If pushed, John might also admit the cut "Cosmic Runner" was inspired directly by Robert Anton Wilson's "Cosmic Trigger" and that "Rainbow Collision" was inspired by a "Psychedelic daydream of two stained glass rainbows colliding over a Technicolor ocean... plus it matched the arrangement." SOLAR BEARS are about layers, a sense of movement and drama, all brought about by a deep process that has resulted in one of the most exciting second albums this year. But what do we want a band to do on their second album? Give us the things we like about the first, but also to expand, and by setting off on their own personal, deep and intense migration that's just what SOLAR BEARS have done on "Supermigration". HETEROTIC are a group formed from husband and wife production team MIKE PARADINAS and LARA RIX-MARTIN. Mike is the boss and founder of Planet Mu, and a celebrated producer in his own right as µ-ZIQ. HETEROTIC's debut release is a composite of four striking instrumental tracks and four unique collaborations with GRAVENHURST, the musical pen-name of Nick Talbot who is known for his dark, folk tinged singer songwriting for Warp records. They were brought together by a mutual friend who sensed potential in the pairing. For both Nick and Mike, the project is something of a departure. "Love & Devotion" displays a love of hazy, dreamy eighties influenced electronic pop shot through with the dynamics and space of modern electronic dance music. The lyrics describe a world that is profoundly haunted by its past. While the allusions to a key event are cloaked in ambiguity, their echoes in the present are described in visceral and magical detail. The result is an album of tightly coiled melodies cloaked in an insomniac haze, subtle harmonic shifts and strong vocal counter-melodies conveying sweeping sketches of a troubled, neon world. The LP opens with "Bliss" - an aquatic, dreamlike instrumental that sets the scene for the record. The tempo switches up for the 4/4 piano house of "Blue Lights", a scene of nocturnal intrigue, with an ambiguous cat and mouse narrative delivered via GRAVENHURST's insistent and memorable hook. "Wartime" opens with a kick like a heavy heartbeat, the lyrics recalling a poignant, romantic scenario that in reality is just an idealised memory, modified and projected onto a half-imagined past. "Robo Corp" - an evocative Vangelis-like instrumental - sustains that feeling, adding a subtle tension. As the blissful synthesised choirs build in the background, "Devotion" presents a portrait of faded glamour and unfulfilled ambition. The mood is broken by the instrumental 'Knell' in which lines of synthesised guitar and harp intertwine until the track breaks into an unexpected coda, giving a sense of resolution. "Slumber" takes things down to stumbling pace, the drum kicks buried in echo over a muted bassline, as the lyrics describe the solitude of empty streets in the early morning when the party is over and the detritus of a night's compulsion and excess are laid bare. "Fanfare" is a suitable denouement with echoed 808 drums, mournful synthetic horns and a bassline that sound like a flickering opiated grime instrumental, finishing the album with a sense of bittersweet triumph

With his second release for Planet Mu this year, Dream On is more of a full-length outing for Ital aka Daniel Martin-McCormick and a much more substantial record than the very popular and widely critically acclaimed Hive Mind. On Dream On Ital takes his experimentation with house and techno forms even further, creating impressionistic deconstructions from the tropes of early house and techno. Sunny chords, laid back drum shuffle and rhythmic vocal loops are picked apart and threaded with a rich psychodrama of delirious textures, tidal chords and uneasy roughness and dissonance. Having spent over 20 weeks on the road since the completion of Hive Mind, Dream On reflects the raw energy of the live show and the touring mindset: the heady, dream-feel of house, cut with both dubs fracturing smear and an understanding of the power of distortion, honed from years working in DIY and noise. Despot starts the album with a trancey bassline punctuated with off-key vocal stabs, the form of the track brutally prized apart with pitch-shifting seasick chords. Its the records longest track, and a powerful opener. Bois mix of stuttering vocal loops, aqueous chords and frantic drums is tainted with sorrow and loss. Its got a nervous energy, always feeling like its going to topple in on itself, lapsing from ravey propulsion into nauseated hiss and back again. Eat Shit (Waterfalls Mix) is broken and distressed techno in miniature, making the most of distortion and echo to create shimmer and splinters of noise over rough, murky percussion. The dark center of the album, Enrique, strips things back to a cavernous ambience with molasses-slow vocals and a heartbeat drum, building into pulsing tones and scratching noise pulled across the spectrum. The music here works at higher speeds than the dubstep and hip hop tempos he has used in the past, and explores more fully the dynamic tensions between space and detail, melody and atmospheric sound than his previous releases. "Nebula Dance" assimilates the influences of current music being made at the speeds between 140 to 160 bpm, reacting to develpoments in dubstep, jungle and more recently footwork, retraining ITAL TEK's instinct for deep and melodic music with an emphasis on dramatic drum work and impressionistic synths with restrained precision. Opener and title track "Nebula Dance" sets the scene, playing with melodic timestretched breakbeats and smashing snares with a distinctly early jungle atmosphere, reminiscent of Rufige Kru's early breakbeat experiments, but retooled for the footwork generation. "Pixel Haze" messes with lush, swirling 8-bit arpeggios over cracking kicks and snapping snares, building into a dense rushing atmosphere with held chords. "Dusk Beat" is all Rhodes-like with relaxing atmospheric synths over soft footwork toms, keeping the pressure up with and tight fills and edits. "Intercruise" cools things down with a half-speed hip hop feel, the synths and voices swelling and pulsing like Art Of Noise's "Moment's In Love". "Steel Sky" is a slow, molten-sounding track, made of thunderous claps, viscous chords and warping subs, all creating a dense and moody atmosphere. 'Glokk' takes things up a notch again, running bell melodies and dubbed out vocals against rapid-fire synth stabs and rolling drums, leading into the similar but more spacious territory of the warm, airy "Solar Sail". "In Motion" takes things into leaner darker techno territory, with tight 808 edits and basic channel style gaseous chord stabs over a bed of monolithic sub bass creating what is probably the most "dancefloor" track on the album. "Discontinuum" builds up an airy ambient atmosphere with crashing wave-like field recordings, relying on a single high speed tom to keep pace before crashing into 'Human Version' with its bittersweet melody and sense of urgency. "Yesterday Tomorrow Today" closes the album with bass trills and feather-like synths slowly bringing us back down to earth.

According to the original press release, "Detrimentalist" is Venetian Snares' 332nd official studio album of disgusting ejacutronic rave horn, fresh off the bakery truck to pluck out your brain cells and replace them with inescapable k-hole oblivion. This is really a roots record for Mr.Snares, revisiting those days when jungle was more about energy and experimentation than a strict formula. Those days before they took out all the good bits between the kicks and the snares. More and more snares between the snares from Snares, this is jungle at it's most invigorating . over 20 people were harmed in the creation of this record. All tracks produced on just 45 laptops and 81 midi synthesizers.

As both singer-songwriter and electronic musician, the sound on Rudi Zygadlo's new album "Tragicomedies" defies easy categorisation and pigeonholing. His debut, 2010's "Great Western Laymen" (Planet Mu) took the fundamentals of Dubstep to a point previously unheard, amalgamating off-kilter influences like choral music and Frank Zappa into the mix, opening the ground for the inevitable fusion of Dubstep and song that was to follow from many artists. Wilfully perverse as ever, Rudi took his second album "Tragicomedies" on a different trajectory, dumping the Dubstep chassis, while leaving its faint traces and treatments, jump cuts and edits. "Tragicomedies" is a puzzling, romantic and emotionally open album, cerebral, yet poppy and direct, weaving from woody, folky arrangements to doo-wop and the elegant structures and motifs of classical music in an unforced and playful way. The album opens with a lyrical reminder of past love - the woozy pitchy piano ballad of "Kopernikuss", which is swiftly followed by "Melpomene", where the piano vamps reach a crescendo while Rudi sings of his lost love. By the time we reach the album closer it's clear Zygadlo has been operating in a musical zone unique to himself, with repetition of the classical Minimalist replacing some of the Dubstep-inspired structure of his past as just one key aspect of this bold album. Listen more closely and you'll detect echoes of a broad range of music including Laurie Anderson, Raymond Scott, Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares, Alfred Schnittke, John Zorn, Bach, Prince and much more. - but what's most striking is how Rudi's twisted take on pop has a distinctly 2012 feel to it. The music and the lyrics of each song burst at the seams with a sense of now. This is music pouring out of Rudi Zygadlo in the most natural way possible. Full of emotion, life and living. Sensationally so

You might be familiar with KONX-OM-PAX previous work without already being aware of it. His real name is Tom Scholefield, he's from Glasgow, and as a 3D film director and graphic artist he's made videos for locals Hudson Mohawke and Mogwai as well as Martyn, Jamie Lidell, Kuedo and Lone, created sleeve artwork for Oneohtrix Point Never, Rustie, King Midas Sound and others, plus he has toured with Mogwai as a DJ. So how on earth does he find the time to make music, or the energy? Tom explains that he makes music to chill out, a form of creative self medication. In contrast to his bright, synthetic and colourful artwork and videos, his music is more mossy and analogue. "Glacier Mountain Descent", for instance, is a re-imagining of the start of Werner Herzog's "Aguirre". At other times tracks are inspired by nostalgia for childhood feelings, while watery immersion is a running theme, and a sense of Scottish surrealism is another. Tom started out making tracks in his teens, copying the synth lines he'd heard on prog house CDs, before graduating to a deep fascination with Jeff Mills and Drexciya's hermetic imagery and alien funk after hearing them on John Peel's show. This led him to creating lo-fi techno, then DJing and promoting events at art school, which developed his knowledge, driving him to formulate an aesthetic of unpolished, textured and emotive music. "Regional Surrealism" works largely like a film. Vignettes like "'Isotonic Pool" transition into larger more dramatic pieces like the deep "At Home With Mum and Dad"which takes an early Aphex Twin sounding ambient track and fills it with odd drama. "Sura-Tura-Gnosi-Cosi" featuring mysterious U.S. artist Steven Retchard is full of tape-hiss and unsettling spoken word, while "Zang-Tumb" - with guitar played by MOGWAI's Stuart Braithwaite - works in bruised and twisted Ash-Ra Tempel territory. Elsewhere "Slootering" finds a sweet spot between Drexciya and Oneohtrix Point Never, while "Lagoon Leisure" lets you get lost in musique concrete space and drops. Later on "Hurt Face" rubs static and raw electronic textures together and "Chambers" follows it up with a sunny glow. The album finishes on the water-themed "Let's Go Swimming" which indulges in a slow-motion nostalgia, sending you away happy.

"Work, Live & Sleep In Collapsing Space" starts with huge symphonic synths, half-speed kicks, trap style hi-hats rushes and flammed 808 snares, slowly building up with giant whooshes of gaseous noise before breaking out into an intense trancey Moroder-esque synth that totally fills the track, making it sound ab-solutely vast and a little bit frightening, running it through effects to give it an aggressive, spacey rush that takes your breath away. It's the sort of track that connects KUEDO's past to the newer music he made on "Severant", with a fierce emotive grace and intense power. This will absolutely destroy dancefloors and headphones alike. First up on the remixes, Laurel Halo takes the track apart, adding sutured strings and bubbling sounds inside a pressurised dub space, before dropping a gorgeous, bittersweet melody into the space that's left. It's an appropriate re-imagining of the title, almost aching and groaning under its own pressure. Next, Claude Speed re-interprets the track as a beatless evocation of space, building graceful warm strings into a vision of symphonic beauty before the whole piece coalesces into building trancey bass synths over racing live drums, mirroring the original version but taking it in a totally different but equally breathtaking direction
