Despite an entire year without shows, James found a way to create & connect with audiences during the peak of Coronavirus NY lockdown. José James is known for assembling some of the best live bands in the world, and his New York 2020 crew is no exception. Each song resonates with the creative urgency of an effervescent, resilient 2020 New York City. Taali) will be released as a single timed with Valentine's Day 2021. • In 2021, Rainbow Blonde Records is breaking new ground and expanding its reach to Europe with both José James and Taali relocating to Amsterdam for the entire year. There they will be welcomed as Artists in Residence, and plan to promote forward-thinking approaches in the return to live shows. As they learned in the recording of their live albums, the idea of a "show" may not return for some time, but in marketing each album, the label will re envision and broaden the live music experience tailored to a 2021 environment. As such, the marketing plan will build on brand, venue and online partnerships focused on new forms of musical connection.

Featuring lo-fi hip-hop production from legendary producers Flying Lotus, Moodymann and Taylor McFerrin, Blackmagic saw James embracing his role as “the Jazz singer for the hip-hop generation.” Highlights include the Soulquarian meets Curtis Mayfield vibe of “Code,” the Moodymann-produced Marvin Gaye tribute “Detroit Loveletter” and the spaced-out jazz meets hip-hop of “Blackmagic.” James throws down the gauntlet and takes a soulful journey into the history of black music, skillfully connecting the dots between soul, R&B hip-hop and London’s brokenbeat and dubstep movements.
