Powerful voice from Iran (Or: Messenger of hope) Marjan Vahdat from Iran has got a powerful voice. Together with her sister Mahsa she has conquered the world for Persian singing. On her second solo album, she has started a cooperation with an international ensemble. Here four eminent musicians take part, each of them from four different countries. From Palestine: Ahmad Al Khatib on oud, from Turkey: Ertan Tekin on duduk, from Norway: Gjermund Silset on bass and from Iran: Ali Rahimi on percussion. Marjan is prevented from performing on stages in her homeland, because since the revolution in 1979 it has been forbidden for female singers to perform for men in Iran. This has forced both Marjan and her sister Mahsa to make their career internationally. Then it helps a lot to have an exceptional voice which defies borders of both language and culture. Marjan has made a remarkable impression on stages in many European countries, in the US, Australia, North Africa and in several countries in the Middle East outside of Iran. Of course, even people from Iran know her voice and can get access to it through the internet. Every track is sparkling on this production, and the musicians create an energetic oriental soundscape around the mighty voice of Marjan. The project gives new interpretations to classical poems from the Persian folk tradition and from some contemporary poets like Forough Farrokhzad and Mohammad Ebrahim Jafari. The poems are about love and hope, and the title of the album, ”Serene Hope” indicates that hope is still alive against all odds. The recording happened in Maridalen church in Oslo, with Martin Abrahamsen controlling the sound and with Mahsa Vahdat and Erik Hillestad being the producers.

Say You Love Me wasn't "Om" Alec Khaoli's first solo recording but the 1985 EP solidified the bass player and songwriter's standing as one of South Africa's most consistently innovative pop auteurs. He built a career on ubiquitous rock, pop and soul hits with groundbreaking bands like the Beaters, Harari and Umoja. But Khaoli's seemingly endless fountain of music continued outside these ensembles, where he usually played bass and contributed songwriting and vocals. Khaoli released several successful solo works while he made records with Umoja and worked on other productions with friends. This creativity was aided by Khaoli's own recording studio. He was the first South African to have a privately-owned studio. As black artists were forced to record during lunch breaks and didn't get sufficient access and time in the white-owned studios, having his studio allowed Khaoli to develop in his own way. Hence his productive output during the 80's and early 90's, releasing 5 LPs with Umoja and 5 solo LPs, along with numerous singles and EPs. There's something broad and dynamic about the almost epic pop sound Khaoli creates on Say You Love Me. Being the first South African to take control his recording process and thereby free himself from one of apartheid's many strictures, he took his vision of music to new realms and made timeless music for the dance floor in the process.

In three years we have released two albums, performed and travelled in many places from Chile to South-Korea, given big concerts in Estonia, received many music awards and started building an international career. Of course, this hasn’t happened by itself – behind these achievements are many wonderful people and lots hard work. In the songs of this album we reflect on all these adventures, challenges, people, emotions and thoughts that have affected our lives. Our new album “Shimmer Gold” was born as a symbiosis in which the band members have grown together and opened themselves up thanks to their rapid success. All this has given meaning to our existence and with this understanding we have become much more confident and conscious. And so has our music! The key word for compiling the new album was time. We have had time to let the music carry us, to focus on individual songs as well as the whole. New album features 12 tracks inspired by Estonian folk music intertwined with original compositions. It puts together fast rhythms inviting to dance as well as dreamy, touching tunes. We go on using archival recordings of unique and charismatic folk singers. As a special guest, actor Aivar Tommingas gave his voice to one of our tunes. Traditional songs tell about inviting to working bee, love, animals and a magical tree. On this EP of six tracks - four of them brand new - traditions of the Sahelian archipelago, the romantic ballad (Forti Dor), batuque (Era Mintira) and funana (Discriminason) are colored by touches of pop and the flavor of islands across the Atlantic, as shown by Di Mi Ku Di Bo (The Two of Us), recorded in Havana at the end of 2016 and released as a single at the start of this year. To freely fashion Bersu d'Oru (Golden Cradle), Elida Almeida chose a lesser-known beat from the archipelago: tabanka. Played during the festivals of May and June on the island of Santiago, that symbol of the struggle for national independence is now an exuberant, colorful affirmation of African identity.

Put aside all the usual stereotypes about Gaza. Forget war, Islamism and poverty for a second. Listen instead to the new CD featuring the Gaza Youth Choir. The album, entitled Salute to Gaza, is bursting with energy from a part of the Middle East where 1.8 million people are cut off from the rest of the world. The music, the power and the joy tell the story of how we in the Western world should start to look at Gaza from a different angle. Instead of allowing ourselves to be infected by a fear that is way over the top, we should rather take a look into what the world is missing when we turn a blind eye to all this energy and vitality that is locked away. On Salute to Gaza we hear familiar Palestinian traditional songs accompanied by oud, nay (flute), khanoon (table harp), double bass and percussion. Suhail Khoury has also written a completely new song, a tribute to Gaza and the people who live there. The songs, accompanied by a large string and woodwind ensemble, have been arranged by Kjetil Bjerkestrand. All the musicians and singers in the choir are students in the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (ESNCM), which has departments in four locations in the Palestine territories: Ramallah, Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Gaza. Recording of the instruments was mostly done in the ESNCM studio in Ramallah, which has a collaborative agreement with KKV. The choir and soloists were recorded in a modern studio in Gaza. The equipment in the studio was smuggled through tunnels from Egypt before they were closed and destroyed two years ago. The album is released by KKV and produced by Erik Hillestad. He and the sound recordist Martin Abrahamsen had to wait a year before the Israelis granted an entry permit to Gaza in January 2016, after three applications. The album, funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has a richly designed cover by the Lebanese artist Tania Saleh, who is also one of KKV's artists.
