In the early years of Fela Kuti's career, well before he would define the genre of afrobeat, and leave an indelible mark on the musical landscape, he was a struggling trumpet player, seeking to redefine the sound of his current group, the art-jazz ensemble Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet. As he moved his group towards the then-popular genre of highlife in 1963, he lost his bassist in the move towards commercial success, but gained the company of Ojo Okeji, who had a sterling reputation both as a bassist and percussionist in groups like Lagos Cool Cats, Rex Williams' Nigerian Artistes, and Western Toppers Highlife Band, a favorite of Kuti's. Okeji impressed Kuti with his deft jazziness on the bass, so he was in on the spot, and the Fela Ransome-Kuti Quintet became Koola Lobitos. It was Okeji that introduced Kuti to the famed percussionist Tony Allen, (Who would subsequently join Kuti into his greatest years as an artist) as well as conguero Abayomi "Easy" Adio. During his time in Koola Lobitos, Okeji not only contributed deeply melodic, and adeptly rhythmic baselines, but brought his own influence from emerging US soul artists like James Brown &
The Famous Flames and Wilson Pickett, heavily pushing Koola Lobitos towards a more soulful direction. This push was often resisted by Kuti, who frequently clashed with Okeji. 1968 proved to be a turning point for the group, as the Nigerian Civil War broke out, and many starving musicians turned to the military for work. Okeji and Adio would leave for the army, while Kuti and Allen kept Koola Lobitos going, where it evolved through different names and iterations and grew into the worldwide afrobeat force that made Kuti an icon during the 70s and 80s. But as Kuti and Allen rose to global recognition, Okeji and Adio would form a new band within the ranks of the 6th Infantry Brigade of the Nigerian Army. Their emblazoned blue jackets earned them the nickname "The Blues”, but Okeji preferred the name “Shango” after the Yoruba thunder god. Shango took the fundamentals of Kuti's famous afrobeat and brought new layers of guitar and horn arrangements, while often invoking supernatural aesthetics, and maintaining a love for the US soul artists that influenced Okeji so much. Because Shango was an army band however, their records were not readily available to anyone outside of the military so their music, including their eponymous 1974 LP, remained relatively unknown even amongst the people of Nigeria. Pull Up series with another strong statement of an EP. In their trademark hybrid style, the Munich bass boys showcase their versatility from writing hypnotic and sensual electronic melodies all the way to the ruffest club weapons. Keeping close to their roots, all of these tunes have been extensively tested on big soundsystems to make sure they make a lasting impression. The opener Electone is an instrumental excursion into a melodic corner of club music, with lots of intertwined synth layers and a long build up, culminating in a break that will send shivers to ravers and home listeners alike. This “club love song with no words” is named after the Yamaha Electone organ it was written on. Following this is Take It Low, another true soundsystem weapon featuring longtime collabo partner Doubla J from Costa Rica. Stripped down to the basics, this bass monster combines both dancehall and booty bass rhythm structures and lets them collide with the well timed vocals while diving in some dubby goodness. Pump Drop Wine ups the tempo again, coming in at 150 bpm of ultimate rolling bassline heaven. With little more than the catchy meandering vocal to complement the beat, it is all about this disgustingly good sounding bassline that makes this a club sureshot. “This is the part where you pump drop wine and repeat.” Always good for a surprising collabo, Bene and Jakob finish this EP off with their quite special version of Bitch Better Have My Money (you know, the AMG one). With no other than Miamis finest Otto Von Schirach on vocals, this 1991 cut gets transported to an 2017 club enviroment with ease. For those in the know, The Ruins Of Beverast has been one of the worlds premier black metal bands for a while now. The compositions here are truly next level, the band brings in touches of Indian music as well as booming black metal. They are unafraid to bring in just about everything and it leads to a record that has a strangely consolidated sound. It's an album that you get lost in becase The Ruins Of Beverast are constantly opening up new soundscapes and sonic vistas in a way that few bands of their ilk could ever dare. The production on Exuvia is utterly massive and it reflects the devastating concepts at hand. This is a band that invokes foreign powers and strange demons. They are tapped into a reality that many of us only dream of, something that is firmly established not just by the first song but even the potent cover art itself. Exuvia is a record that demands time, you can't just digest in one listen but rather you need to sit down and think about it. Pick apart its layers and try to find the kernels of truth that have come to define what it means. The Ruins Of Beverast have gone above and beyond here and we need to embrace that

Unterton introduces an artist who’s already renowned for his work within informed circles but yet to be discovered by most: Berlin-based New Yorker Phase Fatale debuts on Unterton after strong releases with respected labels Jealous God and aufnahme + wiedergabe and six well-received club appearances at Berghain. Originally coming from a Post Punk / Cold Wave band background Hayden Payne stated in a recent Berghain club flyer interview: “Techno […] resulted from a development of [Wave and EBM] genres and its movements. Punk and Techno share the same mindset, this connection has always been there for me.” Thus it was no surprise that his Anubis 12“ for Unterton combines said spirit with four club-ready tracks, placed firmly left of the center. “Hollow Flesh” starts with menacing synth pads and pulsing drones framing an ongoing, distinctive kick drum – an oppressive, regimented beat sequence reminiscent of angst-ridden, sci-fi scenarios. But Phase Fatale follows his own formula: Wave-meets-Electro vibes on a certainly dark overall sonority. The eponymous “Anubis” on A2 opens with an atmospheric intro until a kick sets the tone for a more straightforward, hypnotic and cold Techno cut, finely wrought with musical detail, as heady as it’s gloomy. "Wound" ignites some harassing fire: what abruptly starts off like a classic Techno-meets-sizzling-Noise track soon alters to a more tribal, snare-led Industrial cut with an osseous kick, offering an iridescent, textured feel, at times sounding like forging steel, then like swarming insects. On its abrasive surface “The Size Of God” on B2 shares the same bleak vibe of its three companions, but stands out with a more introverted, slow, broken rhythm structure, looped drones, opaque-distorted voice transmissions and swelling synth melodies, placing the Phase Fatale blueprint in a Post AmBM (Post Ambient Electronic Body Music) context.

Almost 10 years have passed since Onra arrived with the charmingly eccentric Chinoiseries LP. 32 Hip-Hop beats formed the sample-based project - dusty Chinese vinyl hissing and crackling throughout – resulting in an intriguing and spontaneous mix of the producers interest in exploring a newly-discovered style of Music with his love for classic Hip-Hop production. Using the style of analogue MPC production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly Chinese Music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in Chinese music. The Chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. In that way, “Pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one. Onra finishes this epic trilogy with class as a result of extended record digging across the Far East and the producer's own development over the preceding 10 years. As a producer who has released records inspired by 80's Funk, 90's Hip-Hop and R'n'B, Electronic and even a Spiritual Jazz project, “Pt. 3” brings this stylised set to a close. Normally a man of few words, Onra has his own take on the three Volumes: I see the first Chinoiseries as a trip, inspired by my own first travel to Asia, each beat representing one particular moment of the journey, the second one, more like a soundtrack to a movie, each beat representing a different scene, and the third one, I tried to create a dark, smoky and mysterious cinematic atmosphere so you could create your own movie in your head. For this last episode, I just really wanted to have fun with this type of material for the very last time. I dug deeper than ever and I have tried to do as many different rhythm patterns as possible, from various influences like Hip-Hop (from different eras), to Bossa to Indian Music to Psych Rock, Soul, etc. and try to portray a different image of Chinese Music.

MORFIN are starting with their second album, and this time they have ironed out all the previous criticisms. As a result, "Consumed By Evil" is an excellent old-school worship, provided that this slogan is limited to the US death of Death Metal: Death, Gorguts, the new representatives Skeletal Remains and the Dutch Pestilence branch. Already "Inoculation" has set the course of the course course. On the debut, however, there were some lengths and bumps, especially in the solos. "Consumed By Evil" now reduces everything to the point. Especially the guitar solos are now used furiously and very cool. Apart from that, however, this album is primarily intended to appeal to the people who "Scream Bloody Gore" or "Leprosy" have properly celebrated. Because MORFIN offer with their second output no more and no less. Early American Death Metal with a light impact from the thrash. Very well implemented. The fact that you have heard this one thousand times already, does not matter at this point. And even small innovations such as a blastbeat over the dry-dusted reef in "Carcinogenic Parasite" brings little new impulses. Yes, let's be honest: If we want to hear Death thought, we hear Obscura or Decrepit Birth. MORFIN serves the lower, primitive desires: simple death metal, full soup on the 12th raw, unbridled and full of fire. Under this aspect, "Consumed By Evil" has become an entertaining and entertaining album. Direct, brutal yet garnish with refined details. Only the submarine subtly inserted bass-barrels are really smart. But whether one needs the two instrumental "Illusions Of Horror" and "Posthumous" directly after each other, I doubt. Sure, the two songs show beautifully the skills of the string fraction. But in the album flow I could just as well do without. Otherwise, I can talk about "Consumed By Evil" only a little and moul. Okay, the strumming guitars of "Embodiment" or in the intro of "Illusions Of Horror" are louder than the rest of the song and in itself the production is rather muddy and weak. But it does not matter. The vibe of the disc is correct. And since I do not mind, MORFIN is just a very good worship of the old school! For example, Gruesome have blown out quite unimportant material. That's why Consumed By Evil is a great recommendation for fans of old Death, old Gorguts and old Pestilence. The whole thing is back in a traditional artwork, although this time less in the Locke more in the Seagrave style, on CD, classic vinyl and for the digital nomads also as a download. Look Blue Go Purple rose, as so many Dunedin groups of the time did, from the roil of post-punk activity in the early 1980s. They were friends with, and sometimes girlfriends of, prominent members of the rising new groups. "[It was] an amazing pool of amazing people who just played music. And welcomed anyone who wanted to play music. We were a social group as well," LBGP bass player Kathy Bull (now Francisca Griffin) told Auckland student radio station 95bFM in 2012. An early shuffling of the pack saw Lesley Paris drumming with The Neanics and Craven A's with boyfriend Terry Moore, David Kilgour and Peter Gutteridge. "We had a kind of Velvet Underground thing going on. I'd always loved Maureen Tucker's drumming," Lesley Paris recalled to academic Ian Chapman in Kiwi Rock Chicks, Pop Stars &
Trailblazers in 2010. Finally all three EPs have been released together as one double gatefold LP with six additional live recordings of previously unreleased tracks.

The foundation of this dub album was created by some of the finest sessions musicians ever to grace the studios of 1960's &
70's Jamaica. Their instruments were the cornerstone to countless Dub LP's that began to surface in the early 70's and continued on into the 80's creating a whole new genre of music. As they did back in the early days of dub, the Kingston All Stars gathered together in Kingston, Jamaica at Mixing Lab Studios and laid down a series of riddims that would lay the groundwork for what comes next: the singers. Both Greenwich Farm rasta, Prince Alla, and falsetto, Cedric Myton of the The Congos, contribute vocals to the album but half of the riddims on this LP are, to date, unreleased, and have yet to be voiced. In essence, this album is a sneak peak into upcoming releases. The style of riddims that were created during these sessions range from the Cumbia influenced 'Reyes Dub' to the Ethiopian Jazz flavored ' Kebra Dub ' that pays tribute to the African sound system, Kebra Ethiopia Sound and shows the wide variety of influences that fuel these musicians. Tracks like ' Dub Ova ' combine Ansel Collins keyboard work with Hux Brown's infectious grooves to create a funky rhythm that you have not heard the last of. 'Clappers " features Sly Dunbar's big drums and another Hux groove creating a classic skanking dub reminiscent of rhythms by The Revolutionaries band. As with all good Dub albums, the tension and release as instruments are brought in and out of the mix are felt as they much as they are heard. The negative space left by dropping the bass is then filled with a horn line or guitar lick soaked in echo or reverb giving tracks a second life. The album, mixed in Montreal by producer &
engineer Mossman, who is no stranger to engineering dub, has become a worldwide collaboration and is a harbinger of big things to come from the Kingston All Stars! The Kingston All Stars are Sly Dunbar, Ansel Collins, Mikey 'Mao' Chung, Linford 'Hux' Brown, Jackie Jackson, Robbie Lyn, Everton &
Everald Gayle. Under the artistic direction of Moss ' Mossman ' Raxlen, a multi-faceted musician, producer, engineer and writer, the KAS will be releasing new recordings as well as performing live shows internationally. These are the musicians and session men who recorded at a variety of Jamaica's legendary studios, and created so many of the classic rhythms from the 1960's and '70's - a countless number which have since become staples in a wide variety of today's musical genres from hip hop to dancehall to dubstep and techno. In various incarnations, members of the group have been part of or recorded with Bob Marley's Wailers Band, Studio One's Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors Band, Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Upsetters, Peter Tosh's Word Sound and Power Band, Toots and the Maytals, Now Generation and many more.
