Fiedel joins Ostgut Ton with his new Substance B 12' Where to start besides pointing out that Fiedel's debut solo release on Ostgut Ton has been long in the coming, and that it's a glorious one at the same time. The Berlin-Brandenburg native was there when the wall came down, started DJing in the 1990s at Subversiv, began producing with Errorsmith as MMM in 1996, held a residency at OstGut from 2000 on, continued doing so at Berghain since 2004, runs his own labels Fiedelone and Fiedeltwo, used to work at Hard Wax record store and is a mainstay at Wax Treatment and Killasan Soundsystem. The old hand of Berlin's Techno scene now presents himself fresh and in top form with his first full-length O-TON record, following up on his already intense contributions to our compilations Fünf (2010), Various (2013) and Ostgut Ton | Zehn (2015) with an even stronger three-tracker. Fiedel's production style breathes the spirit from the early days of Techno music: blending genres and techniques, not focussing on a narrow musical narrative, combining Techno, Acid, Electro, Jungle, Boogie, Dub music and Broken Beats. Substance B is the logical consequence of being an avid vinyl-focussed DJ, experienced producer and a meticulous sound engineer: a compelling sound for a modern age. The eponymous 'Substance B' (on A) starts with a clear statement: play this out in a big, dark room, focus on the subs and tear off the roof while you're at it. Departing from a clear idea which path to follow in the studio Fiedel constructed this high-energy, raving Techno belter around a doubled, heavy, bouncy bassline motif, with additional percussion and bubbling Acid lines slowly swelling until a jacking melody kicks in. Old school hasn't felt so fresh and current for a long time. 'Track 432' on B1 evolved and assumed shape based on a phone-recorded sketch - a technique Fiedel enjoys to use now and then to pin down ideas on the go. Sonically we're at the exact opposite end though: melody-wise this 7-minute lush, deep yet functional cut is reminiscent of shrill sirens, soon intertwined with cowbell jabs, all sitting atop a banging kickdrum and staccato-stabs from the drum machine. 'S-Drive' closes this record on B2 with a tidied up and slower jam: its prancing, mesmerizing synth melody is the dominating element here, accompanied by a subtle kick and syncopated snare, hi-hat and other percussive components. A1: When Suddenly : Acid With Cosmo Vitelli's trademark style being eclectism, it's pointless to pin down this track to a specific genre. Borrowing from the kind of disco not disco and acid-without-303 vibes that I'm a Cliché is famous for, this is an instantly gratifying tune where synthesizers are engaged in call and response melodies in an elegant take on the idea of machine funk. The result is catchy, refreshing and primed for the dancefloor. A2: El Si Señor (Skinny version) If you think this track is just a tool, then you're only getting half of the picture. Skinny but chock-full of melodic and percussive content with a plodding rhythmic section moving at around 105 BPM. This is a downtempo track where heartfelt melodies, sound effects, and pristine seamless arrangements are used with great results by Cosmo Vitelli. B1:The Cemetery of Unsigned House Tracks Clocking at 9 minutes, don't get fooled by the track's tongue-in-cheek title, we're dealing here with a seriously epic tune. Set in an endlessly rising motion, the track begins with a refined but twisted vibe, sparse but ominous guitars and plenty of FX. Gradually, an infectious synth arpeggio rises and carries with it the whole track, some sort of hypnotic and sensual monster, utterly irresistible on the dancefloor. B2: El Si Señor (Soundtrack Version) With melodies that are more expansive and at the fore, leaving the rhythmic section discernible but clearly in the background, this version of El Si Senor is a reference to 70s film music, and this bittersweet tune closes the EP in style. 2016 was a busy year in the world of this Welsh unit. They slimmed down to a 5 piece and took their blend of heavy shoegaze and tough post-punk well outside of their Cardiff home, embarking on a run of UK and European gigs with Nothing (Relapse Records) and also their own tour of the USA and Canada. This all culminated with an appearance at the annual Blackest Ever Black rave in London where they held their own on a bill with drum & bass stalwart Felix K and Bristol's Ossia. In 2017 the band plan to return for a full tour of the USA, followed by their biggest European tour yet including the Nothing Nice To Say festival in Berlin. England's psychedelia of the sixties, the US American contemporary dreampop, the intimacy and abyss of bands such as The Notwist or Sparklehorse - musical poles between which Binoculers has moved since its beginnings. But never has this music been so illuminated and so immediately experienced as on this amazing album. After the creative calm in the countryside Nadja and Daniel again go to the big city, where they are in the Hamburger Konservatorium and in their own studio and import, produce and mix "Sun Sounds". With the help of guitar, piano, drums and harmony songs, the songs grow, open and unfold. Ancient synthesizers, field recordings and soundscapes are added and the album is immersed in the unreal light of a psychedelic sun. But there are also shadows - the often dark and dystopian texts of the duo add to the music a second, pictorial level. Both Nadja and Daniel create outside of Binoculers' music for feature films and documentaries - it is quite possible that listening is linked to seeing and influenced by one another. What has been created there in the sheltered cosmos of the own studio, the two multi-instrumentalists and producers also live very well.
