The eighth Desmadrados Soldados De Ventura album is a three-hour 4LP box set of psychedelic musings on the departed musicians of 2016. Produced by Richard Formby (the engineer behind Spacemen 3, Wild Beasts, Vibracathedral Orchestra, Skullflower and many more) and recorded at a converted church in Leeds, this is DSDV's most melodious and spacious album to date. You can hear clear nods to The Grateful Dead throughout as well as fragments of Can, Santana/McLaughlin's Love, Devotion, Surrender and even Tim Buckley's Blue Afternoon band. Drowned in tape echo and with a Wally Heider-style snap to the drum sound, the recording has all the traits of a classic Formby production. Gone is much of the blur of guitars that shrouded the band's previous albums in cacophony. Whilst still present here and there, it's been replaced with a somewhat virtuoso level of interplay that smacks of a bygone, pre-ironic era in rock music where sincerity, dedication to the craft of improvisation and the desire to transcend the mundane via heightened, sustained hive-mind mentality was all that mattered. Dans Dans is the utterly unique musical collective featuring Bert Dockx (frontman of the acclaimed Flying Horseman), Frederic Jacques (bassist for the great Mark Lanegan and himself a formidable songsmith and singer under the Lyenn moniker) and Steven Cassiers (a sought-after instrumentalist who has collaborated with the likes of Dez Mona and DAAU). Since their debut in 2012, the trio has been astounding listeners with music impossible to pin down in a single genre. Instrumental, atmospheric, hypnotic, delicate and wild: Dans Dans tirelessly construct their own musical universe and time and again demonstrate why they are one of the most intriguing bands currently working in Belgium and far beyond. Although until recently the band was known for their original covers of the work of other artists (Nick Drake, Ennio Morricone, Ornette Coleman, David Bowie, Robert Wyatt, ...), on the fourth album - the blazing, magnificent Sand - nearly all of the compositions are their own. And as always, for these three natural-born musicians, the compositions are merely a jumping-off point for the improvisational exploration of an unheard spectrum of musical landscapes and emotions. Improvised, but with a flawless ear for an unwavering narrative logic and infectious melodies. Sand was produced by the indispensable Koen Gisen who provides a sound that is transparent, deep and urgent. Recorded in barely four days' time, played live (without overdubs) in a single small room, the sound of this album is like a journey through a foreign land that you'll never want to leave. In the words of the award-winning author and Dans Dans-admirer Peter Verhelst: On SAND, you'll find highly spatial music, music that takes you places you've never been before, for the simple reason that they hitherto didn't exist, or at least not in that way, where everything can be utterly transformed in an instant. One second you're standing in the desert with your arms outstretched to grasp the breathtaking canopy of stars, and the next second you're nestled in the voluptuous cushions of a shisha lounge, smoking a hookah, following which a herd of wild mustangs storms past you, and then suddenly you find yourself in a mosh pit. The music is cinematic, but also literary: every time you listen, new stories effortlessly come to mind. As quirky and capricious as the music may be, SAND is dreamier than their previous records. At times lethargic, pensive even, or vulnerable, at times exhilarating, driving, ecstatic, now raw and abrupt, momentarily whimsical, and then again melancholy, consistently generous, intuitive, hypnotic, but never pretentious, slick or predictable. Perhaps nocturnal is the best description: because at night everything is sultrier, more seductive, sharper, more intoxicating, more random, looser in the hips, but also more soothing for the battered soul. The last song closes with a witty sample from Hitchcock's film 'Shadow of a Doubt': 'Sit down!' a male voice commands. This is pleasingly evident on Volta, the latest Boogie Belgique album for the Cold Busted label. “Jungle Law” gives a glimpse into Boogie Belgique’s sonic palette. Tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. Soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. Album opener “Go Slow” shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. It’s a beautiful concoction, and Boogie Belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. The album is the follow-up to the studio album Super Session [MOVLP1530] which included both Bloomfield and Kooper in addition to Stephen Stills, and had achieved commercial and critical success earlier in 1968. In regards to the performances, recordings and production, in the sleeve notes Kooper describes the difficulties of finding rehearsal space, Bloomfield's insomnia, and the failure of a vocal microphone during "Dear Mr Fantasy". The album is an important, if raw, document of a live blues-rock performance of the period and is notable for not only one of the earliest live recordings by Carlos Santana, but also Bloomfield's debut as a vocalist. Whilst he is not historically noted in this role, in "Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong", according to Kooper, "he displays consummate homage to the traditional guitar-voice trade-offs; a lesson in phrasing and understanding. Naturalistic black metal that demonstrates an impressive degree of compositional confidence and control of dynamics, concept, and flow, resulting in a rich and immersive album with a lot of depth. While most modern bands err on the side of so-called experiments and "open-mindedness", Ashbringer tries to adopt a conservative posture in a manner that kills music with stagnancy. In Vacant, Ashbringer present songs which bear the mark of an intention of maintaining coherence by repeating the same idea and only venturing forth to use the same motif played in several different ways, offering carrying a whole song or entire super-sections mostly in this manner. The extent of these variations are limited to texture change and register change. Correctly sensing that this only creates a static picture seen through different-colored lenses, other ideas are introduced, but these do not bear a clear relation between each other beyond the concordance of similar technique, tonality and consistency in style.
