It's been 20 years! Yes, PELZIG have been around since 1995. Why this isn't part of general knowledge might be owing to the fact that PELZIG have often been misunderstood to be a side project of SLUT- which, facing the staff intersections, perhaps couldn't be avoided. Yet, the band has always self-sufficiently chosen its own path. The return of PELZIG after 11 years! Up to now four albums have been released which partly were recorded and mixed at Uphon Studio in Weilheim in Germany. In 2004 their last album ,Safe In Its Place" was released - it probably captured the sound and the energy of the band from Munich and Ingolstadt better than any release before. That was eleven years ago. It feels like an eternity. Eleven years in which the band faced good and bad news, on a personal as well as on a musical level. Meanwhile in the real world, the entire musical landscape was turned upside down. Things changed. Unperturbed, the band around vocalist Christian Schulmeyr continued working on their material, always in the safe knowledge that one day the time would come to release a new album. Even though now they had to start from scratch. Which doesn't matter to PELZIG, just like anything else. The band never intended to be the next big thing. From an endless amount of ideas a core of ten songs emerged which PELZIG will release under the title ,Medium Cool World". The album is a distillate from over a decade of various musical influences, changing living environments, strokes of luck and experiences of failure. Not everything is always cool. But also not quite uncool. Rather somehow in-between. Guitarist Rainer Schaller - who by the way is a producer at the German radio station BR Zündfunk - took over production duties. Oli Zülch, known for his work with NOTWIST, MS JOHN SODA, SLUT, DIE ÄRZTE and SPORTFREUNDE STILLER mixed the album and gave it the final punch. Or maybe not. We will see.

Many late night guitar sessions resulted in new soundscapes. A new chapter was opening. The former 'Daysoul' moniker exchanged for his original birth name 'St.Louis'. Producing and writing all his own music and playing his own instrumentation;
Olivier St.louis was embarking on a new road. The Black Music EP coming out on Jakarta Records gives listeners both old and new a taste of Olivier's true music palate. When asked his thoughts on his artistry he states:"no punches pulled ...no compromises ... Just me".?

Multi-instrumentalist Fictonian has announced his incredible debut album ‘Desire Lines’ will be released on November 13th through Distiller Music. Fictonian deliberately evades definition. With the music just one part of this bold, multi-faceted project encompassing music, sound recording, video, art, animation and photography. The man behind it, Glen Roberts, has remained elusive to date, determined to create a body of work which reflects a mind as visual as it is musical. “Fictonian is a specific state of mind within me,” he says. “There are certain types of songs that only come from this mindset I call my “fictonian” state. It means a person who spends more time in their head than reality, which I think everyone can connect to at times. This project represents that side of me.” It was when Fictonian escaped from the hustle of London life and found solitude in the lush pastures of rural Herefordshire that he first realised the particular qualities that came from this kind of creative isolation. “These aren’t songs that would have come if I’d sat down at a piano and decided to write a pop song, they come from a very specific place in my mind when I was in the countryside on my own for a long time drumming up musical ideas.” The result is truly magical – rousing torchsongs like ‘Make It Be Ours’ meet the wistful lullabies of ‘Double Negative’ bolstered by the stomping battle cry of album track ‘Kettle of Fish’. Layers build to crashing sonic crescendos, each song feels ethereal, barely there yet alarmingly bold, and anthemic. It is an album that manages that rare feat of grandiose yet beautifully hushed. Much like the twisted paths most of us follow – this is not a linear album. Tracks glide together – themes emerge, sounds are layered like a puzzle reflecting our most intimate fears, needs and expectations. “I knew that I didn’t want to follow a genre to easily fit myself in,” he says. “I wanted this album to capture a moment in time”. His meticulous obsession for sound recording gives the album a startling, yet delirious sense of present. Everywhere he ventured, from the bustling streets of the capital, to deserted waterfronts on the Lake District to the Wye River where most of this album was written and recorded has somehow imbued the music. Fictonian, at its very core, is a project about humanity. Fictonian may have been born out of a solitary state, but this is not an album of despair of isolation, it is a rallying cry, a rousing call to action, a message of change. “It’s about giving yourself the self-belief to follow your dreams,” he says. “To find your real desires though, you need to be true to who you are.”

Sydney's Community Radio are back with a new 7" on Tenorio Cotobade after last year's 'Sick In The Car' / 'Wildflower', this time making full use of the vinyl surface to present a four-track EP. If their previous release saw their own brand of Australian pop sprinkled with a dose of post-punk tautness, the first two tracks on this EP follow a somewhat warmer feel, propelled by grooving bass and the organ's driving hum and punctuated by delightful and restrained guitar work reminiscent at times of Richard Thompson. The outstanding title song was included in Ben Watt's list of favourite tracks from 2014, after the band released it digitally. 'Aide De Camp' is another recording from 2014 which showcases Community Radio's prowess at combining a flowing and tight sound with a lyrical approach. The sprightly guitar playing and smooth drumming make it instantly engaging, a shining moment akin to other fine purveyors of pop craftsmanship such as The Sea and Cake. It is followed by the delicate and frail 'Cruel Museum', which whispers this EP to a soothing end.

John Blek’s voice carries a tinge of sadness with storyteller insight and Robbie Barron’s guitar a snarl of menace. The sound is filled out with David Murphy’s pedal steel and Anna Mitchell’s atmospheric keyboards (her 2015 solo album was equally noteworthy). The title may be misleadingly topical as may be the somewhat disconcerting preoccupation with morbidity, but that should not deter investigation of this impressive second album by the six-piece Cork band. While their debut made good currency out of alt.country leanings, these nine tracks are more cohesive and mature, with echoes of The Jayhawks. The title is taken from the opening ballad Guard My Borders, which is redolent of that excellent British band The Leisure Society, but these borders are more personal than political. A band on the up.
