Synthwave sounds like a soundtrack from the 80's meet electro and techno mechanical rhythms along a stream of tracks that almost have no name so that the listener can just let them flow and flow with them, taking a journey away from the present time and into an abstract, dream-like modern dimension where the misty and the solid are one.

The chance to slow down and take stock can be a welcome one. Hiro Amamiya certainly isn’t alone in feeling like life’s currently on pause, but the Teleman drummer’s debut solo EP Uncertainty comes during a rare break after eight years, three albums and numerous globe-trotting tours. Now comes time to reflect.Saying that, Uncertainty isn’t a reflection on his ‘day job’ specifically. In fact, listening to it, it’s very little to do with Teleman at all. Released under the moniker Hiro Ama, the EP’s tonal references to Hiro’s Japanese homeland, use of field recordings and the pared-down house rhythms that underpin its six tracks offer a sense of staying still and expressing the thoughts, memories and emotions that flooded his mind during a period of self-isolation.“This EP is a mixture of feelings like sadness, loneliness, confusion, hope and nostalgia” says Hiro. “It was a bit like writing a diary, only I wrote music instead.”There is no specific narrative to Uncertainty. It was written, recorded and mixed within a month inside Hiro’s London flat; each track arrives to the listener much like a memory or thought would come to the artist. For example the shimmering house of Broken Satellite, for example, was inspired by an image of a disused satellite orbiting earth.“There’s a sadness that it's not needed anymore, but then it's kind of beautiful in the way that it's just there floating around” explains Hiro.Self-taught at guitar and piano, there’s an intimacy to Uncertainty, with those instruments sitting alongside Prophet 8 and Polysix keys. The constant scuttling clicks and shuffles of percussion are all taken from field recordings Hiro took from his own garden – even the kick drum is sampled from a heartbeat – and give the effect of an EP that’s up close and personal, even when it unfurls and skips along at pace.Hiro has always worked on his own music away from Teleman, but it’s only relatively recently it’s become more visible - with remixes in 2018 and last year for Alabaster de Plume and Rozi Plain respectively. Uncertainty is altogether different though, a deeply personal and frequently beautiful journey into the mind of its creator

A lot of fans consider 2011's "Another Night" to be the band's best effort so far. Is that also Chris' impression? "Yes, I think so. Although with vinyl and CD, "Motivator" sells just as much nowadays. If we are talking about streaming, then 'Another Night In The City' is definitely song #1, with song #2 (care to guess?) only getting about half of that number." So does "The Professor" feel any pressure for "Hard To Stop" to become as successful or even more successful than "Another Night"? "That pressure existed in 2013 and 2014," he thinks, "but not so much anymore. If people want to hear another "Another Night", they can just listen to it again." "I wrote it, I played it, same as always when it comes to High Spirits," explains Chris the way "Hard To Stop" was approached. "There are advantages as well as drawbacks to doing it this way. But to do it any other way would not be High Spirits." With uplifting numbers such as "Hearts Will Burn", "Since You've Been Gone", "Now I Know" and a re-working of the classic "Midnight Sun", "Hard To Stop" will probably be hard to stop and might even surpass "Another Night" in terms of commercial success and popularity in fan circles. The most unusual sounding number on the record appears to be "Voice In The Wind", almost sounding like pop punk meeting "Crusader" period Saxon. Will the band's core audience be open-minded enough to cherish this change in style? "I hope so," says Chris Black, "but maybe not unanimously. I thought "Motivator" was missing a bit of variety, so a song like this was very welcome."

Helvetia were formed in Seattle in 2005 by Jason Albertini. Since the band's inception, he's employed a rotating cast of band members and collaborators, which now includes Steve Gere and Samantha Stidham. Albertini is 1/3 of the group Duster, who spent 2019 releasing a new album and playing shows for the first time in 20 years. Naturally, Helvetia share a lot of the same sensibilities, pushing Duster's boundary-bending ideals even further out with a mix of odd pop and eccentric oddities. Helvetia made their debut in 2006 with 'The Clever North Wind' (released on Duster bandmate Clay Parton's Static Cult label), followed by 'The Acrobats' (2008) and 'Headless Machine Of The Heart' (2009). With each release, Helvetia explored more psych-influenced territory, further developing their take on slow core. After a handful of additional releases for The Static Cult, Albertini relocated to Portland, Oregon, and released 2012?s 'Nothing In Rambling', his first with Joyful Noise Recordings. Albertini joined Built To Spill on bass the same year, and the two bands shared members and toured together. 'Dromomania', Helvetia's eighth LP, was released in October 2015, followed by the 'Sun Chasers' EP in 2017. Albertini continued to play bass for Built To Spill until 2019, when Duster started playing shows again. After a very busy year of touring, Albertini spent the summer recording 'This Devastating Map' at his home studio. While the mighty Duster dwelled in a broken down space station lost to the cosmos, Helvetia's sound is decidedly more earthbound: guitars sparkle and soar beyond their means with hushed vocals transcribing aching personal struggles. Helvetia ditches conventional song structure in favor of bouts of repetition in which Albertini rewards the listener with unlikely hooks, juxtaposing memorable figures with odd shapes that desire repeated listens
