This is the first in a two-volume compilation series that consists of homemade recordings by experimental electronica artists. Contributions were solicited and selected by label founder Jason Whittington, who pays royalties to the artists in return for a commitment to local promotion. Each volume lists at under $10 (which is a good thing, since both are only about a half hour long). If this sounds like a recipe for tiresome electronic mediocrity, be prepared for a surprise. Lunaticworks, Vol. 1 is a thoroughly entertaining pastiche of electronica styles, all of them expressed with surprising skill. From the abstract junglism of the El Montes' "Musicbox Monkey" to Hal 1000's trip-hop gross-out "Thank Goodness You're Home" and the found-sound festival of the Antigroove's "Popcorn," all of the featured artists bring something fun, and sometimes even virtuosic, to the mix. Highly recommended.
