Houle has been a key figure in minimal techno for years, having grown up in Windsor, Canada with Richie Hawtin before launching his career as a producer in Berlin in the early '00s. He was a core member of the Minus crew until last summer, when he broke from the label with Magda and Troy Pierce, partly in order to focus more on Items & Things, the label they've run together since 2006. Undercover will be Items & Things' first full-length, and Houle's first solo release ever on a label other than Minus. According to a press release, it shows him continuing to expand his sound, toying with less club-friendly tempos and the occasional non-4/4 rhythm. All of the tracks are previously unreleased. Marbert Rocel will release their third album, Small Hours, this April on Compost Records. The full-length will continue the group's steady relationship with the Munich-based label, which has released the majority of their output to date. Formed in 2002 and based in Leipzig, Marbert Rocel was originally made up of three members: Robert Krause, vocalist Antje Seifarth and Marcel Aue, AKA DJ Malik, also known for his involvement in the German pop-rap crossover band Clueso. Small Hours will be the group's first album to include a fourth member, Martin Kohlstedt, who joined Marbert Rocel in 2010. Born and raised in the German city of Essen, Tur released his first house record at the age of 16 on UK label Mada Music. Since then he's appeared on labels like Delusions of Grandeur and Jimpster's Freerange Records, who will be releasing Swans Reflecting Elephants. He also runs his own imprint, Mild Pitch, together with Dplay and Langenberg, his partner in the duo Ribn. LAST STEP is an alias used by Aaron Funk, also known as Venetian Snares. His new adventure is called "Sleep" and - as the title suggests - it's a collection of compositions that Funk recorded quite literally as he was falling asleep. For those used to Funk's more abrasive recordings the slower, woozy tempos and soporific atmospheres may come as a surprise. Recorded using his own arsenal of analogue synths and sequencers, Aaron has exploited the wandering timing and pitch of these old beasts to produce uncanny and evocative detuning effects which add to the induced torpor. Off-kilter compilation from Ariel Pink and Animal Collective keys-man. Remastered rarities, demos and previously unreleased tracks are generally the preserve of the socially ostracised. We make an exception for cult hero and part time-Ariel Pink and Animal Collective keys-man John Maus though, and this 11 year-spanning compilation captures Bobby Conn’s brother from a Philip Oakey-loving mother perfectly. At times he croons and coos as if he’s stumbling blind around a broken synth-strewn cave (‘Angel Of The Night’), and his piano, drum machine and guitar-bashing occasionally sounds like a particularly traumatic bout of musical therapy.
