The Sparrow People are a new concept in pop music, or Klaatu all over again maybe, except that the Sparrow People are of the opinion that unlike Klaatu, you would probably have heard of them, if they told you who they were, but that you might nevertheless be prone to categorising them in a certain way, if you knew. Thus, they prefer to remain unknown. That's pretty arrogant, but they are not so arrogant that they insist on their co-workers for this, their first record, to remain similarly unnamed. So it is worth noting that for this debut the Sparrow People collaborate with three geniuses whose talents are unparalleled, and the band are understandably massively proud to be so associated: Nicole Thibault - Nicole, a musical visionary without peer and of extraordinary stature, who first came to widespread notice in the early 1990s with Clag, then attained mature eloquence with Minimum Chips and its vague offshoot Letraset. Nicole, a multi-instrumentalist, plays trombone on the b-side of the single, which is called "Baby Foxes", after some infant foxes seen by a member of the Sparrow People in an unidentified place. Victoria Kolankiewicz - Victoria, like Nicole a trained musician, was new to the studio when the the Sparrow People's debut 7" was made. Her vocals are thus as spontaneousas could be. She also co-wrote the lyrics to "Baby Foxes" and, after a fashion, inspired the Sparrow People to write "I Thought of You", insofar as everyone has to be somewhere sometime. She also painted the cover. The Sparrow People are strongly in favour of Victoria. Robert Sotelo is the nom de plume of Andrew Doig, a 36 year old serial musician originally from Peterborough. Andrew's middle name is Robert, whilst Sotelo is his mother's maiden name. Using this alter ego he's been able to write and record the twelve songs that make up his debut solo record Cusp (released on September 1st though Upset The Rhythm). Sotelo plays every instrument on the album and recorded and edited it with long term friend John Hannon throughout 2016 at No Studios in Rayleigh, Essex. Sotelo's verdant world of sound is at once intimate, choosing to build songs up from ambitious layers of instrumentation into miniature psych pop overtures of genuine sincerity of feeling. Very much grounded in that particular forward-facing strain of mid-60s rock that edged towards Sgt Pepper, Sotelo's music owes as much to Davies and McCartney's unashamed belief in melody as it does to the uncertainty and confusion that comes with mid-thirties existentialism. Cusp is an album that explores the individual in a post-social life era, with Sotelo starting the project initially as an attempt to re-engage with the people he used to know, without relying on nostalgia as a common bond. From this worthy spark of a plan, he's created something grand and compelling, a vast tapestry of songs that stand up and sound afresh. Bring Back The Love' is a dream-swept ballad of expansive vocal refrains and pools of spidery guitar contemplation. arinade' is a song about having no money wrapped up in a hypnotic cycle of chiming bittersweet guitars and gentle keyboard blushes. "Cut the bread, prepare the jam, spread the table, make it grand, your only ever task at hand, to take from this fair land" sings Sotelo with delicate precision. Bronte Paths' is another homespun wonder-pop moment, its insistent rhythm and vocal line embedding into your very core, sounding more like a rediscovered gem than a contemporary song

Australian pop heroes seventh album Beauty Point. Recorded in two parts Beauty Point began to be realized in a week of sessions at a house/studio in Stanwell Park N.S.W. The beautiful cliff side location was contrasted by the albums final sessions which took place in the bands inland hometown of Wagga Wagga. This time the location was on top of Beauty Point Drive - the towns central lookout. As an album created very much on-location the band found the two environments painting a dichotomy in their work from two very different perspectives of beauty. Beauty Point balances moments of introspection with visceral expression as themes of identity, belonging and significance are brought into the light by the shared perspectives of the bands six songwriters.

On the farm in rural Australia where 24-year-old Sophie Payten - AKA Gordi - grew up, there's a paddock that leads down to a river. A few hundred meters away sits another house, which belongs to her 93-year-old grandmother. The rest, she says, "is just beautiful space. And what else would you fill it with if not music?" And so she did, first tinkling away on an out-of-tune piano, and then on the acoustic guitar she got for her 12th birthday. Gordi's first foray into songwriting came in the form of performances at her school's weekly chapel. There the chrysalis of the music she's making now â?? a brooding, multi-layered blend of electronica and folk, with lyrics that tend to avoid well-trodden paths -- began to form. "I often find that writing about platonic relationships," she says, "can be a great deal more powerful than writing about romantic ones." "Heaven I Know," the first single from Gordi's debut album Reservoir, is an example of just that. With the breathy chant of "123" chugging along beneath the song's sparse melody and melancholic piano chords, "Heaven I Know" gazes at the embers of a fading friendship. The ramifications of loss ripple throughout Reservoir, which she wrote and recorded in Wisconsin, Reykjavik, Los Angeles, and Sydney. Gordi produced two of the tracks herself ("Heaven I Know" and "I'm Done"), and co-produced the rest. When it comes down to it, the running thread of the album is its lyrics. "Music is kind of what encases this story that you're trying to tell," says Gordi. Her stories are stark, honest, and soul-searching. Like "the trifecta" of Billy Joel, Carole King and James Taylor that sound-tracked her upbringing, she's unafraid to sit in contemplative melancholy â?? a place she calls, fittingly, "the reservoir."

That Light In Your Mind even exists is a testament to not giving in. That it sounds the way it does is both remarkable and, somehow, inevitable. At various points over the last six years and across three albums, an EP and single, a rotating cast of at least ten other people have formed some version of CYMBALS. More still have contributed to Light In Your Mind. Producer Kristian Robinson (Capitol K) is a major presence across the album and played a key role in guiding the transition from the band's sound on their previous record to this one. Jorge Elbrecht, whose work with Ariel Pink and Tamaryn had inspired the band, mixed the record in Miami, adding those elusive final touches that make a good sounding record great. Consequently, the music itself possesses a sedimentary quality, a residue of each contributing member compressed into what it is that band have become.
