With Plum, the songwriting partnership rooted in the creative rapport between bandleader Molly Hamilton and guitarist Robert Earl Thomas continues to expand on shared visions, delving deeper into what was always there: dusty guitars, ear-worm melodies, warm expansive arrangements. Each entry to their catalog has marked a subtle reimagining of Widowspeak's sound, though perennial points of reference remain the same: 90's dream pop, 60's psych rock, a certain unshakeable Pacific-Northwestness. Speaking to the timeless feeling of each, the albums continue to be discovered well beyond their respective PR cycles, made beloved by new listeners through word of mouth. The band's fifth album feels comfortable and lived-in: humble in structure, heavy on mood. Perhaps that came taking time off from the touring grind, instead working full-time jobs and settling into the rhythm of daily life in a small upstate New York town. Plum was recorded over a handful of weekends last winter by Sam Evian (Cass McCombs, Kazu Makino, Hannah Cohen) at his Flying Cloud studio in the Catskills, and was mixed by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Aldous Harding, Perfume Genius). In addition to Hamilton (vocals, guitar) and Thomas (guitars, bass, synth), it features instrumental contributions by Andy Weaver (drums), Michael Hess (piano), and Sam himself (bass, synth). Plum nestles into the band's canon like it was always there, but with new textures coming to the fore, like the polyrhythmic pulse of "Amy" and "The Good Ones", or the watery, Terry Riley-influenced track "Jeanie" Plum navigates the spaces between the lesser emotions of modern life. Hamilton's lyrics speak to the unique turmoil of anyone who creates as their work, who must somehow survive off such "fruits of their labor." Yet, Widowspeak have always made a bitter pill much easier to swallow. The majestic "Breadwinner", the luminous "Even True Love" - these songs here were made to be listened to, enjoyed. "Money" is particularly hypnotic, built around a repeating, cyclical motif that serves as both skeleton and body. "Will you get back what you put in?" Hamilton asks over an insistent guitar riff. The line is delivered with a knowingness that transcends its surface critiques of late-stage capitalism, asking both herself and the listener whether this is, in fact, the world we want to live in. Through Plum, Widowspeak have brought something into the world that seems to know its own worth, even as it wonders aloud about what is to come. What value and meaning do we assign ourselves, our time, and how do we spend it?

At its core, Candid is a celebration of both the songs Whitney has adored throughout its formation and the band's evolving bond through years of relentless touring and an enduring friendship. "One thing we realized is how these songwriters could make amazing songs with so much simplicity. Either Light is the new album from Boston band Vundabar. It marks their first album since 2018's Smell Smoke which received wide critical acclaim from the likes of NPR, Pitchfork, FADER, Stereogum, and many more. Either Light was recorded in 2019 with producer Patrick Hyland (Mitski's Be The Cowboy, Puberty 2, Bury Me at Makeout Creek) across sessions in Philadelphia and New York City. The album sees guitarist/vocalist Brandon Hagen and drummer Drew McDonald exploring new themes and sounds throughout the collection of songs. Hagen says about the album "We delved into new sonic territory on this record as we employed the use of electronic drum sounds, guest vocals from Emily Massey (Slow Pulp), samples, loops, vibraphone, synths on synths, sub bass and extensive layering for certain songs." Themes of light and water are recurrent throughout the record. In most every situation that gave rise to the songs on the album, Hagen found myself noticing the intensity of light and how it framed the formation of memory and feeling as well as its ability to frame and establish or skew perception. Vundabar will be touring Either Light extensively across the world in 2020 behind their much talked about live show.

Three Queens in Mourning first gathered in summit to sing celebration of the publication of Will Oldham's book of collected lyrics, Songs of Love and Horror. Alasdair Roberts (Appendix Out), Jill O' Sullivan (Jill Lorean), and Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells, Alex Rex) each arrived provisioned with a small armful of selections nearest and dearest from Bonnie Prince Oldham's far-reaching catalogue. Three Queens in Mourning's takes on these tunes follow naturally from the fit between Will's words and their threedistinctive voices. Alasdair Roberts' sweet, guileless delivery of "Christmas Time in the Mountains" amplifiesthe lacerating quality of the lyric "we need an enemy / I'm saving all my rage for you"; even if at the outset of the song we're told that "time is the enemy," the abiding sentiment-the red-hot word that organizes my memory of the song-is rage. Ali's and Jill's trading of verses on "New Partner" puts a different spin on what had previously registered as an especially mercurial first-person narrative voice, one that swoops between tenderness ("lay back, rest your head on my thighs") and ecstatic self-absorption (breaking it to the ex to whom the song is addressed that "I've got a new partner riding with me"). Add Alex's voice, not only for his madcap "Lost Blues," but as part of the choir on "Ohio River Boat Song" (a song with origins in the traditional "Loch Tay Boat Song"), and these three Scottish accents singing about the muddy Ohio, Smoketown, Oldham County, and Floyds Knobs, I mean, there's not much else this Kentuckian-these are all deeply familiar landmarks-can say. Type through tears. On this back to back records, The Bonnie 'Prince' Billy LP is a collection of three cover versions from Ali, Jill and Alex directory and one original track. Circling these core motifs are shifting streams of everything from processed pedal steel and analog synthesizer to violin, viola, stand-up bass, clarinet, duduk and oboe. Thor & Friends, '4' is the band's fourth LP. Initially put out as part of Joyful Noise Recordings, 2019 Artist in Residence, it is now being released far and wide through Joyful Noise. STRFKR has always been a constantly evolving entity, growing over the years from rambunctious beginnings into the manicured electropop perfection they exhibited on their last studio album, 2016’s pristine Being No One, Going Nowhere . New album Future Past Life breaks new ground, dialing back some of the high-gloss production they’re known for to craft songs that are stripped down, spaced out and somehow as visceral as they are dream-like. In 2014, STRFKR’s principal songwriter/lead vocalist Josh Hodges was staying in Amsterdam for a few months, working on the music that became 2016's Being No One, Going Nowhere . By complete chance, a European traveller who was crashing at Hodges’ house in L.A. while he was abroad connected him with some like-minded musicians in Amsterdam, Mathias Janmat and David Hoogerheide. Even though they were more or less strangers, the three musicians clicked almost instantly, coming up with new songs that would eventually make up the bulk of Future Past Life. The immaculate but danceable pop that has long been STRFKR’s calling card is pushed into exciting new places on Future Past Life . It’s a strange and beautiful sonic environment, one that finds STRFKR growing as they embrace the chance and spontaneity that brought these songs about in the first place
