“Listen as if you were being told a secret” - Federico FelliniA companion piece to 2018’s Listening To Pictures, this second volume in the pentimento series presents eight new tracks by the music visionary, continuing his lifelong exploration of the possibilities of recombination and musical gene-splicing. Pentimento is defined as the “reappearance in a painting of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted over” and this is evident in the innovative production style that ‘paints with sound’ using overlapping nuances to create an undefinable and intoxicating new palette.In classic Hassell fashion, the title can be interpreted in a myriad of ways, but perhaps the most pertinent at the moment is the human instinct to sing and play through a rain of difficulties. A future blues of indeterminate and ever-shifting shape. The album is buffered by two 8-minute plus epics at the beginning and the end - the hypnotic “Fearless” with it’s metronomic, almost Can-like rhythm, and blurry, noir-ish texture of sound emerging like car headlights from the fog; mirrored at the end of the record by the beautiful sci-fi lullaby of “Timeless”, a track with a gaseous, billowing quality as electronic clicks and bubbles float over a landscape of shimmering, glacially paced complexity. The bridge between those two worlds is no less compelling, from the frantic, spidery IDM sketch of “Reykjavik” to the collapsed-time ballad of “Unknown Wish”. Whilst containing seeds of classic ‘fourth world’ fusion, this record finds the artist still questing to create new forms and mutations of music, a thrilling window into what music could sound like in a world to come.

JAF Trio emerges on Helsinki's We Jazz Records with their debut LP on 3 July. The young Finnish-Danish band includes saxophonist Adele Sauros (of Superposition), bassist Joonas Tuuri (of Bowman Trio) and drummer Frederik Emil Bülow. After a string of lauded live performances over the past couple of years (the band was awarded with the "We Jazz Rising Star" accolade at We Jazz Festival in 2017), the trio is now ready to present their first studio work. Sound-wise, JAF Trio has an approach which brings the band very close to the listener, "loft jazz" style. The sax, bass and drums are right there at the forefront together, creating a remarkably strong presence. The original material of the band has depth and groove alike, at times leaping forward with giant steps, at times calming things down to really stretch time. The music is very melodic and rhythmic, as withnessed by single tracks "Ninth Row of the Fifth Floor" and "Dark Sparkle". There's a sense of playfulness in the repetitive riffing on "Something New" and an air of sombre melancholy on "Shades of Tomorrow". "JAF Trio" will be released by We Jazz Records on 3 July on vinyl, CD and digital. The vinyl version comes in a heacy-duty "old school" tip-on sleeve. Once they heard him play, few people disagreed with Jaco Pastorius' assessment of himself as the 'greatest bass player in the world'. His meteoric rise in 1977 to the bass chair in Weather Report and his work with Joni Mitchell, established him as a major player on the jazz and rock scenes. Broadcast by NHK radio at Shinjyuku Koseinenkin, Tokyo on 22nd May 1983, this is a rare example of his eclectic Word of Mouth small group having fun with a variety of musical styles. Given his status Jaco could have filled his septet with A-listers, instead he assembled a cast of journeyman and pals from the old days, all of whom can most definitely play. Compared to the high precision fusion he'd been making with Weather Report Jaco's small band outings at this time were rough and ready affairs. Perhaps for Jaco that was partly the point. There is no doubt that at some level this music represents Jaco looking back and enjoying himself with friends. Mirroring his 1976 debut album the set lists for this tour included reggae, funk, latin percussion, soul and jazz all featured alongside Jaco's crowd pleasing solo spots. Oreb is another name for Mount Sinai, the scene of Moses’ encounter with God, a name chosen for this project, which began in 2014, to underline the artist’s desire to bring music back to its primordial function of dialogue with the sacred. The CD was recorded in the Baptistery of Pisa in solo saxophone and natural reverberation without compression in order not to alter the natural sound and dynamics developed by the building, and is the result of a study that the artist has been carrying out for many years on the relationship between sound and sound-space and its spiritual meaning. The deep and dilated notes of The Spiritual Way resonate with suggestions that refer to Djivan Gasparyan’s Armenian duduk, the free spirituality of John Coltrane, the nomadic traditions of the Sahara and the repetitiveness of John Surman. In his third album, Dimitri deals with the theme of spiritual virtues, considering it important to re-propose it in times like these, apparently so lacking in spirituality. Through his music, he has tried to echo and resonate a writing of the Chinese tradition that outlines a path of inner asceticism and synthetically expresses its core principles. “To develop natural virtues a man works first of all to perfect himself. To perfect himself, first of all he regulates his heartbeat. To regulate the heartbeat he regulates his breathing, and to regulate the breathing he concentrates his mind. To concentrate his mind he perfects his will by expanding his knowledge as much as possible. Knowledge expands by penetrating the essence of things. Having penetrated the essence of things, consciousness reaches its highest level. When consciousness has reached its highest level, the will is perfected. When the will is perfect the mind becomes stable. A stable mind tranquilizes breathing so that the heartbeat also becomes regular. Once the heartbeat has been regulated, man is free from defects. A flawless man is in balance and operates with equanimity, compassion, justice and rectitude in the World.
