Stick In The Wheel (singer Nicola Kearey, and guitarist/producer Ian Carter), blend the traditional with their own innovative and unique sound. Their debut From Here (2015) and second album Follow Them True (2018) received much critical acclaim; with the Guardian describing their music as 'razor-sharp, direct and fantastic'. Their third album Hold Fast is the creation of a band who are politically motivated, unapologetically raw, experimental and genuine. It's a made-under-pressure, no-punches-pulled unique and vivid collection of protest music in its true sense, and in times like these it makes Stick In The Wheel one of Britain's most essential bands. Hold Fast was written and recorded in the six months preceding the global pandemic. As the impending situation closed in, there was "a real sense of urgency, how it was crucial to get it right, a feeling that we can't mess it up," says Carter. With most of the work taking place at the band's own studio, there was an intensity to the sessions, with Carter ultimately moving into the studio to produce and mix it as the world went into lockdown. Given the timing, the album's key themes of struggle and seem salient now more than ever. Kearey says, "This record is about working hard in the face of adversity, focusing on the positive, questioning the canon and making an offering with hope and resilience for the future."

Rarely does a record so perfectly encapsulate the essence of Hawai'i - They cut the album in less than three hours // During the 1970s and 1980s, Hawai'i's live music scene was at its peak. Countless clubs, lounges, and bars filled the islands. Musicians embraced and experimented with all manner of ideas. Among them were Steve Ma'i'i and Teresa Bright, a harmonizing guitar-and-bass duo that floated somewhere between nostalgia and an unassuming island sound. They could fill a concert hall or bring the family together at a backyard kanikapila with their music. Both singers share backgrounds rooted in native Hawaiian culture; Steve once the bassist for musician/ activist George Helm, and Teresa the daughter of hula dancer Carol Bright and musician Daniel Bright. Together, they crafted a refreshing approach to jazz standards, traditional Hawaiian tunes, and hapa-haole classics. Steve and Teresa enchanted every listener they encountered, including engineer Rick Keefer, who convinced the pair to record at his Sea-West Studios in nearby Hau'ula

After two albums, the Swedes in STARBLIND had to cope with a change of vocalist in 2016. But the newly acquired Marcus S. Olkerud did splendid work on the third album. An album that already shows the direction of where the quintet is headed with their fourth work 'Black Bubbling Ooze'. Wonderful twin guitar runs by the duo Björn Rosenblad and Johan "J.J" Jonasson are a shining example of Melodic Metal. The hammering bass lines provided by Daniel Tillberg together with the thunderous drum works by Zakarias Wikner create a solid and heavy foundation that gets your heart pounding. In addition, the vocals manage to steer the eight compositions into the classic vein of true Heavy Metal. Eternal's Kelsonic Studios in Australia. The writing sessions for the self-titled were largely helmed by Miranda and Davis, with Miranda providing the riffs and Davis cementing the arrangements. While all three songs from Through Divine Rite made the jump to the self-titled album ("Trampled into the Earth," "Through Divine Rite" and "Flametongue"), the remainder of the songs were created through trial-and-error. Davis, admittedly, is a stickler for arrangements and will often create multiple versions of the same song, while Pinion added her flavor by supplying song ideas and vocal lines written on the piano. This unorthodox way of writing paid off in the end: Stygian Crown emerged with a batch of songs that each bears their own identity but are unmistakably crushing and epic. Pinion shouldered the lyric writing load, detailing myths from different cultures, namely "Devour the Dead," which is about the Egyptian goddess Ammit, while "Two Coins for the Ferryman" recalls Charon, the boatman who took the dead across the river Styx. Her vocals - one of the defining traits of Stygian Crown - work majestically between the band's boulder-sized riffs and powerful bottom-end, resonating on album opener "Up from the Depths" and "When Old Gods Die." A sterling, heaving album capable of moving heaven and earth, Stygian Crown's self-titled debut is a masterclass in songwriting and unbridled heaviness. Doomination awaits! Sneaks, the solo moniker of Washington, DC's Eva Moolchan, returns with Happy Birthday on August 21. Rare 1980 Electronic Funk album from Portland - Featuring Roger Sause (Kenny G) - First ever vinyl reissue since its original release in 1980 - 180g vinyl - Black Vinyl Edition Limited to 500 copies // Roger Sause (Born in Portland, Oregon) is a musician, songwriter and producer with several gold and platinum recording credits to his name. He started playing the piano as soon he was able to reach for the keys. Turned out he was a natural talent, in 1969 (at the age of 9) he was playing in kiddie garage pop bands and around 1974 (still in his teens) he was already composing his own music! Roger Sause was quickly developing his own sound and started experimenting/recording on the 4-track with local Portland engineer Doug Durbrow_Roger had written a bunch of songs that were ready to Shock the world! Roger Sause then pulled some of his buddies from High School: bassist Joe Plass, drummer Billy Bradford, lead vocalist Malcolm Noble and Terrence Wooten on guitar. Several other renowned artists (like Marlon McClain) were to be included in the recordings and live line-ups through the existence of SHOCK_but these school friends would serve as the core in the early years of the band (including Roger's brother: Steve Sause). The band SHOCK was now ready to conquer the world_and the rest is what they call "history". In 1979 and with the financial help and support of their families (and from Doug Durbrow who by now had started the Nebula Circle Records imprint), the band recorded a 7" EP that would serve as an introduction to the public. By handing out copies to stores, promoters, clubs and radio stations word quickly got out about this new sensation called SHOCK. Fired up by the initial success of this 7'' EP, they released their first full-length album Electronic Funk on the Nebula Circle label in 1980 (this LP also includes longer versions of both tracks from their first 7"EP)_Roger and the band considered this small and unpretentious album just a 'starting point'_however, no one could predict back then that this 'first opus' would become one of the most sought-after and highly-rated Funk albums ever! With SHOCK now having a successful album under their belts (and a hit on local radio) they got signed to Fantasy Records where they released three more albums. Several other singles/hits quickly followed and they would find themselves opening for top acts from the likes of Tina Turner, James Brown and Tower Of Power. Rolling Stone magazine picked SHOCK as one of the top ten new artists of the decade. Although the band did follow up with said subsequent hits, a constellation of factors eventually brought the first chapter of the SHOCK project to a close (there would be reunions eventually, later in the decades to follow). Band leader/ keyboardist Roger Sause, producer/guitarist Marlon Mclain, and bassist Joe Plass began writing, recording and touring with smooth jazz star Kenny G. Over time, Roger would become Kenny's musical director. The main core-group of SHOCK are still more or less involved in the funk and R&B music scene_some members (including Roger) would eventually form the band 'Hypertension' who recorded for Atlantic Records. In the early 1990s Roger Sause and Marlon Mclain both moved to Los Angeles, Roger formed a live music production company called Perfect World Entertainment, and Marlon started to work with the Grammy Award winning Dazz Band, En Vogue, The Ohio Players and a myriad of other elite artists. On the recordings we are presenting you today (Electrophonic Funk from 1980) you can clearly hear the JB & Parliament-Funkadelic grooves Roger Sause and his gang were influenced by. Both critics and fans agree that the songs on this classic album truly stand out because of the raw funk-energy-field that surrounds them_The SHOCK sound was the perfect hybrid of P-Funk and heavy synth bass with falsetto vocals. This album has it all_from the melancholic modern soul in It's Over, electrifying Boogie Disco shockers as Dance And Have Some Fun and Nite Life, all the way down to nasty P-funk influenced tracks like The Dog. This LP is a total 'must have' for any fan or collector! New Born Day”, originally released in 1973, is widely regarded as one of the best albums from the Norwegian prog scene. It was the debut album from one of the flagships in Norwegian music - Ruphus. A band that through its first lifetime from 1970 to 1981 had more members than a football team, and developed from playing hard, progressive rock to becoming a leader in jazz rock. "New Born Day" was was conceived in a house in Meråker (near Trondheim) in the summer of 1973. A whole month was spent in this house before the band entered the studio with producer Stein Robert Ludvigsen. The crew of this milestone album featured seven members, of which Kjell Larsen (guitar) and Asle Nilsen (bass, flute) were the only ones who participated on all the records until 1981. The album revealed a band with clear references to foreign powers such as King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Yes and Savage Rose - the latter thanks to Gudny Aspaas, who was equipped with an exceptionally powerful voice. With two singers in front - the male vocals by Rune Sundby - Ruphus marked themselves as a band in a league of their own. Luckily, producer Ludvigsen succeeded in making a recording that sounds fresh even today. At the same time, "New Born Day" is clearly a product of its time, a document from a period of rock history as goal-conscious musicians performed their music in the same room at the same time. “New Born Day” is the first in a series of Ruphus re-issues from Karisma Records, remastered from the original masters by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc).

Acid House re-release alert! For the first time after its initial release on Playhouse Records, Roman Flügel’s sought-after and classic Acid Test 10“ is available again. Now, pressed on pink coloured vinyl (first edition only!) as a Running Back 12“ Double Copy and remastered from the original recordings. But, before writing an essay about the art school of TB303-acid-tracks, we hand it over to the man himself to hear about the genesis of this project: „I’ve always enjoyed Acid House the most when it still has that raw simplicity. When I recorded Acid Test One & Two in the bedroom of my parents’ house around 1993, Acid House was of course already an established genre since it’s origin in Chicago in the mid 80’s. But Acid Test was actually the first time for me to record an Acid House session I was finally happy with. It took the usual suspects of the Roland TB 303, TR 808 and TR 909 Machines along an Ibanez Time Machine Flanger and some cheap Yamaha Digital Reverb, to create the perfect balance of the few ingredients that makes good Acid House so powerful. Two or three attempts of mix downs before the right version was recorded to DAT Cassette - only some of my own favourite records were made like this and I’m happy to see it’s re-release on Running Back so many years later

A compilation of unreleased material from the Light Sleep and Voice Hardcore sessions alongside specially recorded new material, including a cover of “The Void” by The Raincoats. Both formats include a 20 page zine designed by Studio Tape Echo featuring photography from Masayuki Shioda and writing from both Disciples and Phew. It follows on from a limited edition cassette and digital release of Phew’s music on Disicples called Vertical Jamming, which compiled some of the cult Japanese artist’s longform drone works. “This album is an unconscious sound sketch. It was recorded in Japan from 2017 to 2019, a closed and obstructive time. It is not a presentation of a worldview, but a personal documentary music of the late 2010s. The hidden message of this album is: What a terrible world we live in, but let's survive.” - Phew Phew is a legendary figure in Japanese underground music. Starting out in 1978 fronting one of Osaka's earliest punk groups, Aunt Sally, and going on to collaborate with a whole host of notable names as a solo artist in the 80s, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Conny Plank, Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit of Can, Alex Hacke of Einstürzende Neubauten, and Chrislo Haas of DAF. In recent years she's made music on record or live with Ana da Silva of The Raincoats, Jim O'Rourke, Oren Ambarchi, Ikue Mori, and Yoshimi of OOIOO / Boredoms / Saicobab. For Disciples however, the most interesting aspect of Phew's work is the fact she has made her strongest musical work in the last few years, working entirely on her own. There's a lot of interest from crate-digger type labels in her early 80s new wave oriented work, and the names she's worked with are impressive, but there's no doubt in our minds that her two most recent records, Light Sleep and Voice Hardcore, are modern classics. There are times in popular music where an unstoppable force truly meets an immovable object and a strange, unique, alchemy occurs. This is true of the union between the O'Jays (Eddie Levert, Walter Williams & William Powell) and producers and writers Gamble & Huff. The power of the moment in 1972 when the group broke through into the US and UK mainstream with a series of memorable hits still burns bright. During their years on Philadelphia International Records (PIR), they released some of the greatest and most successful soul standards of all time. 'Love Train', 'Put Your Hands Together', 'Now That We Found Love', 'Backstabbers', 'For the Love of Money', 'I Love Music'... there's a seemingly endless supply of hits in the O'Jays' PIR songbook, all here on this 2LP of classics. Success was not instant for the group that started out recording as The Mascots in Cincinnati in 1961. "It's been a long road for the O'Jays, but their music has travelled beautifully," Blues & Soul wrote in 1973, but then the hits started flowing. The O'Jays also notched up 8 Billboard Top 20 albums to match their success in the single charts around the world.
