Before The Bachelor Pad, there was The Wee Cherubs. A collection of lost recordings made in Glasgow between 1982 & 1985. Restored and remastered especially for this release. Formed in 1982 by Martin Cotter, Christine Gibson and Graham Adam & part of the Glasgow indie scene of the early 80's. The Wee Cherubs only released one single. The recently reissued Dreaming, (which is included in this set) before calling it a day in 1985. Their range of influences are on show here, and although some tracks are redolent of Orange Juice and Aztec Camera there is no definitive Wee Cherubs sound, which makes this collection an exciting and rewarding discovery Cotter went on to The Bachelor Pad a psyche fuelled head on collision between The Buzzcocks & Syd Barrett

Warlocks could be considered the first satanic / occult hard-rock band from Spain. With roots in proto-doom band Necrophagus, formed in Madrid by singer / guitar player Victor Ramos in 1974, Warlock were heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, Lucifer's Friend and Hawkwind but they were too dark and wild-looking for the record companies of the time. During their brief existence, 1977-79, they supported the Ian Gillan Band at the Teatro Monumental, Madrid, 1979. They also shared stage with bands like Burning, Cai, Teddy Bautista & Canarios, Azahar, John Martyn, Eduardo Bort, etc. In 1978, they recorded a bunch of demos, collected here for the first time. Raw & wild lo-fi psychedelic hard-rock / proto-doom with space-rock touches! Eight self-penned songs with titles like "Archives Of The Universe", "Cortocircuito", "Earth", "Control Perdido", "Space Ritual" (which is not a Hawkwind cover but a tribute to Dave Brock's band, whom Victor once met in France), etc, plus a cover of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"

Quotes I wanted to make a point early on with this record that there is a lot that women feel and experience outside of what exists in their romantic relationships. My songs on the first album were a means to survive the immediate, and my songs on this album have been a journey in learning how to take up space and thrive in the long term. What Do I Want? started as a love letter to my songwriting and turned into something else entirely, which happens a lot - I try to let the song lead me. It touches on my never ending nostalgia, difficulty with decision making and paralyzing anxiety over making the wrong choice. There have been times where I’ve been so overwhelmed by what to do that I’m unable to make a decision until someone else makes the choice for me. I think part of that comes from being a woman; we’ve been conditioned to doubt our capability, afraid of confidence coming off as arrogance. A lot of this album touches on the challenges that stem from marginalization and learning how to exist in this world without apology or guilt. I initially had made a demo of this on the piano but when we went in to record it we knew it wouldn’t fit with the rest of the album stylistically. We decided to start from scratch, changing the key so it felt unfamiliar and starting with that pulsing synth bass line. I wanted the song to feel chaotic and distracting, like a panic attack trying to be tamed into focus

One of the most prolific underground artists of the 21st century, living his art down to minute detail, Fernow’s penchant for seamlessly spanning underground sub-cultures finds Vatican Shadow now aligned with 20 Buck Spin for the first time. On the new full length album ‘Persian Pillars Of The Gasoline Era’ the deconstruction continues, with layers of collaged synth stabs, low end pulsing dread and ominous sand-swept melodies. And where Vatican Shadow often sets a rigid musical focus with each release, here the full multi-faceted embodiment of the project comes to fruition from hypnotic dance floor repetition, cold metallic percussion, martial bass strikes, and dark melodic noise. Thematically, ‘Persian Pillars…’ connects the dots of America’s underdocumented overthrow in Iran of one of the first advocates of self reliancy and democracy in the Middle East, to the bedrock of violence that would later erupt post-Gulf War and suffocate the world economy in 2001 on USA shores. To further intensify the album Fernow brought aboard Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu, JK Flesh, etc) for the painstakingly detailed mastering process, adding the mysterious vibrance of cold morning mountain light that presages a conspiracy about to unfold.

Ever since the late 1950s bossa-nova revolution, Brazil's influence on French music has been undeniable. Pierre Barouh, Georges Moustaki and a vast array of lesser known artists, all made the Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB) an axis of promotion at the service of a cool and metaphysical, modern and mixed Brazilian lifestyle. Some were seduced by the poetic languors of the bossa, some were looking for fun, and others just loved the American hybridization of jazz-bossa, jazz-samba. What is bossa nova? One of its creators, Joao Gilberto said: "Its style, cadence, everything is samba. At the very start, we didn't call it bossa nova, we sang a little samba made up of a single note - Samba de uma nota so .... The discussion around the origins of bossa nova is therefore useless". It is nevertheless useful to remember that these magnificent Brazilian songs, which the guitarist describes as samba, were shifted and balanced around improbable chords. "I like things that lean, the in-betweens that limp with grace," said Pierre Barrouh, quoting Jean Cocteau. With emotion, arrangements for violin and supple guitar licks, bossa nova rapidly changed. A transformation that can be heard in the Tchic, tchic, French Bossa Nova 1963-1974 compilation, the result of a cultural reappropriation, which traveled through the United States and supplemented itself in France. A musical revolution that has remained significant, bossa nova was born in Rio. From 1956 to 1961, Brazil lived through its golden years.

In 1963, David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia won seven Oscars. Launching its actors to stardom, including Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif who played Prince Ali Ibn Kharish at the age of thirty. The latter incarnated the West's vision of the Middle East which was simultaneously elusive, refined and elegant. His fiery stare, impeccable mustache and immaculate haircut had something to do with it: the Egyptian actor was a sex symbol of an era passionate for James Bond and OSS117 spy adventures. In the Jordinian desert, he fascinated an audience that was in search of an escape and the thousand and one nights. This appetite for a colorful and fantasized exoticism, was also prominent in France's music of the sixties. The country that welcomed Omar Sharif's first feature films outside of Egypt (Goha, La Châtelaine du Liban) produced a delirious amount of music of Latin or Middle Eastern inspiration, grouped behind the genre named "typical" . This "typical" production is enough to scare away the most motivated and adventurous of listeners: overabundant and often blurry versions, anonymous performers (often accompanied by the same arrangers) and only a few noteworthy songs. Venturing into the moving waters of orchestral music undoubtedly causes disappointment, but here and there, springing up in the middle of a vast ocean, one can find a few cha-cha-cha pearls played in a Cuban or Middle Eastern style.

With the intention of creating supreme black metal art, THEOTOXIN ascended from the catacombs of Vienna, Austria in 2016. A quintet featuring members of Zombie Inc., Selbstentleibung, and now-labelmates ANOMALIE, this strong lineup of musicians has been well tested on tour all over Europe. In 2017, THEOTOXIN self-released their debut album, Atramentvm, and kept writing new material, which led to the release of the successor Consilivm (Massacre Records) just a year later. Plenty of live appearances and a tour through Europe followed, further honing the band’s considerable chops. On those stages did the band deliver a throttling live show with deep atmosphere; the name THEOTOXIN began to spread. Now aligned with longtime fans AOP RECORDS, THEOTOXIN are eager to spread their black chants even further with their strongest album yet. Bearing the thematic title of Fragment : Erhabenheit, THEOTOXIN’s third album is both a consolidation of the band’s strengths as well as an extension of new ones. Much like their intense onstage performances, the violence is palpable – almost overwhelmingly so – and is doled out with the ease of experienced masters. Equally so, however, a chilling melodicism rises from this physicality which puts Fragment : Erhabenheit in rarefied territory: a paradoxically refreshing (re)iteration of second-wave black metal classicism. Pressed on heavyweight red vinyl, in a gatefold sleeve OVERVIEW: “Honey Moon Drips was never supposed to happen. I was fully convinced that the Chain Gang Of 1974 was no more. That initial drive and passion I had when I started this project in 2006 seemed to disappear. Throughout my career, I had depended on the record labels to guide me in the right direction and decided l that if I ever did make another album again, it would have to be on my terms. After a lot of life experiences, major ups and downs, and an encouraging phone call with a friend, I found that need to begin expressing myself again through this outlet. From there, the idea of this body of work was conceived. Deciding to release this album via my own label Fever Ltd. gave me complete freedom. I knew who I wanted to work with (producers range from Nathaniel Motte of 3OH!3 to Jason Suwito of SirSly), and I knew what it was supposed to sound like. After a year of writing and recording, a 13 song record which perfectly displays where I am today as a 34 year old man was created. A record which is more toned down when compared to my other albums, yet even more striking. A record that is extremely honest, cohesive, and displays my influences perfectly. Honey Moon Drips is exactly what the Chain Gang Of 1974 is supposed to be today. Almost 14 years in and I'm the most excited about this band than I ever have been. There are instructions on the cover of this album on how to listen to it. I highly recommend following those guidelines and allowing this album to be a part of your heart."

Soul-Weaver was recorded between February and April of 2020. The album is a sharp contrast to the Taras Bulba debut. Whereas 'One' was a laid back psilocybic novelty travelogue; Soul-weaver is more guitar driven dream like psychedelia, mixing 60's garage rock, shoegaze, bucolic west coast acid folk and ambient feedback. The album builds on song structures instead of drifting instrumentals prevalent on our debut and is an indication of the path I want to go musically. Constructing the album in such a short time and under lockdown restrictions changed the way the album took shape. There were no drum sessions between myself and Jon due to the social distance rule and therefore percussion had to be constructed from drum machines or 'found' from previous sessions and cannibalised. So, in some ways this is more a solo record (Jon has never heard the songs). It is a guitar album whereas 'One' was a rhythm/percussion focused recording.

Unplugged sessions have fallen from favour since their 1990s heyday, but here Mali’s leading diva reminds us that sometimes they can eclipse plugged-in originals. The template is Oumou Sangaré’s 2017 album Mogoya, which has already reappeared as a dance-oriented remix. Acoustic is a different beast entirely. Recorded live in a French studio over two days last August, without amplifiers, overdubs or retakes, it lends its songs a new intimacy and intensity. A guitar and ngoni provide the intricate string-driven backdrops while two female singers provide heft, setting up call and responses with Sangaré, who is in magnificent, free-flowing form. Whatever the subject – the wiles of womanisers, the conduct of social life, the rights of women – Sangaré is always serious. She reprises Diaraby Nene, her taboo-busting breakout from 1990, which references sex, FGM and polygamy. Here, too, are tributes to her mother (a celebrated singer) and to her musical mentor, Amadou Ba Guindo. The moods are by turn bluesy (Minata Daraba) and dreamy (Saa Magni), enlivened by touches of celeste. The set rolls out seamlessly, a hypnotic gig. Fans had to wait eight years for Mogoya, while Sangaré expanded her business empire; but this unplugged sequel is better still

In it since nearly three decades, PUTRID OFFAL has always been a one-of-a-kind band among the gore Death / Grind scene incorporating gregorian chants and keyboards into their swarming mass of infected aural virulency ever since their cult 1991 split with EXULCERATION and, even though it took them 25 years, their successfull 2015 debut, “Mature Necropsy” proved it once more, soon followed by countless gigs and festival appearances (HELLFEST, OBSCENE EXTREME, DEATHFEAST…) and Europe tours with MERCYLESS and INHUME. But when “Mature Necropsy” is a rewritten re-recording of all of their ’90s material, new album “Sicknesses Obsessions” is all new material and that says a lot about the challenge it was for the band writing the successor to an album that’s full of well-known neckbreakers and push the envelop even more but the fearless quartet of pathologists had a plan as some of those new songs like “Let There Be Rot” or “Livor Mortis” are already stapples of their setlist ever since they reformed as showcased on the album’s “Live at HELLFEST” bonus DVD shot in 2017. “Sicknesses Obsessions” plunges even deeper in the anatomical inferno demonstrating PUTRID OFFAL‘s songwriting versatility yet managing to keep it a coherent unit even though incorporates unusual elements for the genre (female vocals…), paying homage to the Hard Rock scene with winks to AC/DC, MOTÖRHEAD, etc. yet chanelling it all to create a reeking symphony of putrefying sickness. Lyrically, they are obsessed. But not with gore for gore’s sake: it’s a journey into the history of pathology evoking such historical characters as Andréas VESALIUS, charnel houses, barbers being the first real pathologists because of their cutting skills, etc. not forgetting their fascination for necropsy like the autopsy report opening the album or “Y Shaped”, obviously referring to ribcage splitting. If you expected a surgery, be warned, what you’re going to face here is a total butchery! Let There Be Rot
