I wrote the majority of the songs on this record thinking about what past versions of myself would've needed or been listening to at di&erent points in my life," explains Worriers' Lauren Denitzio of Survival Pop, their sophomore album. "I think we're all probably having a tough time right now and I hope that the songs on the record can be intentionally uplifting and cathartic. The record is called Survival Pop because I see it as songs for self-preservation." From enduring years of health issues that led to open heart surgery at the age of 25, to growing up queer, to losing friends to suicide and substance abuse, Lauren is no stranger to life's hurdles. But make no mistake, while these experiences influenced the creation of Survival Pop, the record avoids self-pity and o&ers instead a triumphant rallying cry, a celebration of overcoming, and an empowering journey to self-actualization. "Simply finding a way of surviving in the face of illness and loss, mosogyny, homophobia and the patriarchy is still a threat to those things - it's a forward, agressive action," they explain. Survival Pop was recorded in Fenton, Michigan with Marc Jacob Hudson, who worked with Worriers on their debut full-lenth, Imaginary Life, alongside Laura Jane Grace. Lauren met Marc through Laura and the two felt an immediate musical kinship. While on previous records Lauren had been the sole member to stay throughout the process with other musicians leaing after recording their parts, for Survival Pop Lauren worked and lived for over two weeks alongside Lou Hanman (guitar), Mikey Erg (drums), Nick Psillas (bass) and John McLean (guitar). The result is a record that is Worriers' mostly tightly crafter yet, never straying from their punk roots while expanding their sound to something infinitely accessible and poppy, carried throughout by the strength of Lauren's vocal melodies.

In advance of their upcoming jazz fusion album comes a re-release of 2 original songs from the band’s now hard-to-fnd 2010 album, Kindred. The frst side features legendary saxophonist, Wendell Harrison, who is best known for his work on Detroit’s renowned Tribe record label. ‘Kindred’ is a dark and heady composition reminiscent of Miles Davis’s fusion-era material, which despite it’s abstractions, is underpinned by a heavy, head-nodding groove. On the ?ip is ‘Polyester People’, an explosive, up-t empo jam which shows off the keyboard skills of Jeremy Ellis. Despite being best known for playing the drum machine alongside the Roots on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Ellis is an incredible keyboardist in his own right. His contribution on the Fender Rhodes calls to mind Herbie Hancock’s best work with the Headhunters, and the band never lets up under him!

Austin based ambient electronic producer VVV (aka Shawhin Izaddoost), returns to Holodeck with his second full-length album "Shadow World". A pioneer of hardcore rap music, one can’t talk about the West Coast hip-hop scene without mentioning Todd Anthony Shaw, better known by the stage name Too $hort. A veteran of the genre, Too $hort’s discography is one filled with tracks about pimping, drug use, promiscuity, and unapologetically explicit language. (His 1985 record Don’t Stop Rappin’ is notoriously one of the first to use the word “bitch” on a track.) He’s released nearly 20 albums over the course of his 35-year career, and collaborated with artists as varied as Jay-Z, UGK, 50 Cent, Lil Jon, he’s even been one of the few musicians to work with both 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G., in the middle of their infamous feud. Too $hort’s works were largely a cult phenomenon during the early years of his career, but 1988’s Life Is… broke him into a mainstream audience, and gave him his most critically acclaimed release. (Not to mention his highest-selling to date.) The album stood out in its field, at a time when re-sampling old-school funk and R&B singles was the name of the game, Too $hort instead opted to take established riffs and hooks from from those singles and re-create them with studio musicians and drum machines. The album cemented Too $hort’s status among MC’s, and the title track itself would even be re-sampled in tracks by rappers UGK, hip-hop-influenced rock group Sublime, and even Too $hort himself on later singles

Less than a year after their out-of-nowhere debut LP, J-Zone and Pablo Martin (aka The Du-Rites) return with their sophomore effort, Greasy Listening. The positive response to their 2016 self-titled offering inspired the NYC funk duo to become winter-spring studio rats and churn out 13 new tracks that both pick up where the initial offering left off and explore previously uncharted territory. J-Zone (drums, organ, percussion, turntables) continues to deliver funky rhythms and chunky drum sounds, while Pablo (guitar, bass, synthesizer, electric piano) returns with plenty greasy guitar moves and addictive melodies. But where Greasy Listening differs from its predecessor is in its composition and theme. Where their almost entirely instrumental debut often built upon jams and vamps, the tunes on Greasy Listening are composed and arranged with more attention to detail, feature some vocal narrations and rely less on soloing. Undermanned as a duo, the J-Zone and Pablo realize they would they need to tighten up the areas beyond their main instruments (drums and guitar, respectively) to prevent rehashing their debut. These limitations birthed raw (but charming) organ solos, electric piano riffs, greasy bass solos and commentary, all of which were almost absent on the frst LP. This go round is also an opportunity to be tongue-in-cheek about being forced to multi-track everything as a two-man band. Greasy Listening is a “live” concert staged at a fctitious hole-in-the-wall chitlin circuit venue fttingly dubbed: The Collard Green Lounge. The aforementioned limitations have aided The Du-Rites in creating their own sound, which nods to both Pablo’s tenure as guitarist in new wave band, Tom Tom Club, and J-Zone’s former path as a hip-hop producer/ artist, but somehow remains its own entity. Welcome to the Collard Green Lounge for some nasty, dripping bacon fat Greasy Listening with The Du-Rites. Don’t tell your doctor you were here.

The story of influential blues musician Robert Leroy Johnson is the stuff of music legend. Stories go that as a young man in rural Mississippi he became part of a Faustian pact with The Devil to become a blues musician. Whether the tale was true or not does not take away from the immense legacy Johnson brought with him. Even though his recordings were released more than a decade and a half before the inception of rock and roll music, they provided a solid blueprint for the genre, as well as guitar techniques that were revolutionary at the time. Robert Johnson's music was only available on Grammophone singles until 1961, which saw the release of a definitive compilation of Johnson's recordings. King Of The Delta Blues Singers was a collection of 16 mono recordings cut from 1936 to 1937, and is widely considered the linchpin for the electric blues and blues-rock movement of the 1960s. The album was a critical smash, a badge of coolness during the time, and is now considered one of the greatest albums of all time. It was the first album to be inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame, and greatly impacted the development of artists like Bob Dylan, John Mayall, and Eric Clapton, who most famously had a smash hit on rock radio with his band Cream's cover of "Cross Road Blues
