Manhattan to Berlin Our story has touchstones in Detroit, Birmingham, Sheffield, and Berlin, but it begins with some prophetic foreshadowing in a midnight Manhattan car ride. It was a cold winter night in early 2006, and Dave Sumner, better known as Function, wanted to show me what inspired him, so we got in his car and drove around the perimeter of Manhattan. From the financial district to Harlem, all the city lights, rivers, bridges, and even giant buildings shrunk in comparison to the sounds we were listening to. Dave had found a new path in techno, and as he obsessively talked about the British Murder Boys and the work of Mika Vainio, he focused in on his latest influence: Sleeparchive. As we were listening to a recent Sleeparchive live show, we were basically freaking out at how clearly you could hear the reflected influences, but really how fresh and innovative it felt. Elements of Plastikman's take on jacking raw rhythms collided with Sähkö bleeps for a powerful post-Jeff Mills form of techno. It was acid without acid. Finally a way forward. The next year on a humid summer night in Berlin, Dave and Karl O'Connor, better known as Regis, were sitting with their laptops back to back at 2 am in his apartment. 'They were set up Battleship style, it was like the cover to Upstairs at Eric's,' recalls Dave. He was playing Karl selections of his new music when Karl stopped him and said, 'This is your new record.' They worked through the night and within a day the record was done; Dave was so inspired he decided to move there, to 'techno Mecca.' He returned to NYC to get ready, and three months later, on the day he moved to Berlin, his record was released as Isolation on Sandwell District and was named DJ Magazine's 12 Inch of the Month. He then set up his studio in the warehouse of Tony Vieira, who had run Integrale Muzique with Karl, and is literally surrounded by records. He makes his new records with those records doubling as his soundproofing and audience. Sandwell District Sandwell District is a literal place — the Black Country — where the industrial revolution began. It's one of the many Dadaesque references in the Integrale catalog. The whole thing has this major punk DIY spirit, best characterized by the line from the Desperate Bicycles: 'it was easy, it was cheap, go and do it!' Sandwell District quickly evolved from a label into a music project with a distinctly egoless and mysterious approach. They functioned around the motto of 'Decentralizing the artist ego, blurring the lines between the artist, label and DJ; re-arranging the DNA of modern dance music.' The first record on Sandwell was by Regis, followed by records from Juan Mendez as Silent Servant and Dave as Function; soon they would all release collectively. Sandwell District was a more mature response, the second stage of a career with the disparate influences absorbed, digested, and slowed down, yet somehow more emotional. The combined musical knowledge of these three was magic; all bases were covered. Juan created the powerful visual language of Sandwell and was the glue, while Karl and Dave became the engine driving Sandwell District live. Sandwell peaked with some legendary live shows, from closing the mainstage at Sonar to playing the Park Hill Flats in Sheffield for Black Dog, with Cabaret Voltaire's Richard H Kirk pogoing onstage during the performance. Later, Rrose would become an integral part of Sandwell, right before they broke up at the height of their popularity, in the spirit of their heroes Big Black. 'It was a glorious death, not a mercy killing, as is so often the case in these situations,' Sandwell said through a statement from Silent Servant. Dave then went on to record his debut solo album Incubation for Ostgut Ton and revived Infrastructure. The Next Phase Sometimes the only way forward is to look backwards. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it, as the saying goes. So what you hold in your hands, Recompiled I/II & II/II, is an attempt to understand what has happened and to liberate the artist from the burden of their own oeuvre. Moving forward, Function is still connecting the dots with his DJing around the globe, with residencies at Berghain in Berlin and Bassani in Tbilisi, Georgia. Collaborations with techno super heroes continue, in projects like LSD with Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell and his work with Damon Wild. Who knows what the future holds New music, new collaborations, new developments in sound — places for new ideas to thrive. In Detroit, we wanted to see society evolve; Detroit Techno was about the future. Techno at Berghain is about losing yourself; it's about personal freedom. DON'T SLEEP is a new band from Harrisburg, PA and Washington D.C. featuring Dave Smalley, the singer of influential hardcore and punk bands such as Dag Nasty, Down By Law, DYS, and All, as well as Garrett Rothman (bass), Tom McGrath (guitar), Jim Bedorf (drums), and Tony Bavaria (guitar), who have also played in a number of bands previously on labels such as Blackout Records, Eulogy Recordings, Art Monk Construction, Sony, and Megaforce. While originally Don't Sleep started to back Dave up while playing songs from his former bands, the members all became fast friends and quickly began writing new material. The music they created was not only influenced by Dave and his former bands, but the records that all the members have been listening to and have been influenced by over the years. Don't Sleep has recorded 7 songs which are on this European Exclusive release on vinyl only. Two of these songs were cowritten and have bass playing provided by Chris Bavaria, the bass player from React Records' bands Mindset and Praise. While Don't Sleep's music can be described as aggressive, fast, and energetic, they've managed to infuse melody and an element of pop sensibility into their songs. DOMINIK might be known as a resident DJ of the CLUB SCHWARZES SCHAF in his hometown AUGSBURG. There he started throwing parties alongside DANIEL BORTZ anddeveloped his style of DJing. Over the past years DOMINIK released music on labels like PASTAMUSIK, SUOL, LIEBE DETAIL and O*RS. He is also part of YANDOM ( a project together with YANNICK LABBÉ). DOMINIK's productions are influenced by various kinds of music, let it be techno, house, disco or electronica - a mixture you can hear on his recent TRYADS EP on &ND MUSIC. The Underdogg' is DJ Tre's Hyperdub debut EP for Hyperdub. He contributed two brilliant tracks to our DJ Rashad tribute set 'Next Life', but compared to other long term members of the Teklife footwork crew, he hasn't released much, so we're very happy to bring him out to play again here. Tre has been about since the early days, born and raised on the South Side of Chicago. Encouraged by Rashad and his partner DJ Spinn, he has been making tracks since 1999, over a decade before footwork's ascent to global popularity. On this EP his sound, for the most part, is rooted in the speedy 4/4 of juke. It features a sparse and minimalist take on footwork but he's got a knack of adding in tight little switches and details that keep the tracks moving as essential dance floor weapons. The EP starts with 'It's House Hybrid', which has its musical roots in Chip E's 'It's House', one of the very earliest house tracks. It's a tried and tested dancefloor devastator on dubplate, built on a crackling and hiccuping juke 4/4 which grows in intensity, until an Amen drum break cracks it open and joins the kick in the onslaught. 'A Hammond Jam' matches a moody organ with rolling bass and drums. 'Get Dat Ass Up!' bounces against a twitching melody. 'Ta Rhodez Jam!' micro-edits a delicate Rhodes piano sample into flickering shapes against switching 8 bar patterns of drums that go from rolling to soca-like pulses with whistles. When she released her first songs, Dominique Dillon de Byington was 19 years old. In 2011, Dillon put together her songs written over the years for the album debut "This Silence Kills". With songs like "Tip Tapping" or "Thirteen Thirtyfive" - with more than 30 million YouTube streams the most successful single so far - they achieved their original pop-narrations, which hadn't been heard in Germany yet. "Kind" was produced and written in parts together with long-term collaborator Tamer Fahri Özgönenc, the New York-based producer Nicholas Arthur Weiss and the Swiss producer Samuel Savenberg. There are very effective wind instruments. In an enchanting way, Dillon designs his own musical system of signs here, which elude any interpretation from a certain point on. Damo Suzuki has been on a 'Never Ending Tour' connecting and collaborating with a network of musicians worldwide since 1997. Suzuki is best known for his years as vocalist in the influential German Krautrock band, CAN. In 2004 Damo travelled Australia for the first time performing with various artists, including Australian multi-instrumentalist Oren Ambarchi and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta. This would be his first of many visits down under. This 50-minute recording of Damo and his Network of "sound carriers" is what Damo calls "an instant composition", a spontaneous exchange of energy! The result is a transcendental trip with psychedelic sounds. Cut live to acetate at Melbourne's Corduroy Records in 2004, re-mastered by Mikey Young and pressed to vinyl in 2017. Bye has been best known as one of Sweden's most sought-after film composers, working on scores not only for contemporary but also vintage silent movies. In 2014 he received two of the three nominations for Best Original Music Award at Sweden's Guldbaggen. He's recorded a number of solo works, too, not least 2010's Drömt and 2013's Bethanien. This Forgotten Land , produced by Joel Danell offers a deeply atmospheric experience, steeped in nostalgia and yet thrillingly contemporary. Opener "Melt" indicates what's to come, with its muffled tones and subdued sense of foreboding. At other times - such on "Underneath The Silence" - one can hear the influence of Debussy. On "Absence", the creaking of Bye's keyboard pedals is intrinsic to the atmosphere of his rippling melody, while "Into The Haze" and "Cascading Sun" and "Empty Streets / Piano Street" reveal his affection for circus music and other archaic styles. Incongruous sounds audible in the background are essential to his compositions. When he was 20, Stockholm's celebrated Cinematheque contacted Bye about playing music for silent films. "Silent film music was like a blank spot on the music map, but I recognised the freedom I'd have as a musician, and the force of the poetry in these forgotten images." As his reputation spread, Bye recognised that he'd stumbled on a singularly romantic style. "I started out as a piano improviser," he says, "and suddenly I realised that I'm a composer."
