specially mastered for vinyl by Patrick W. Engel/ Temple of Disharmony, 100% original sound, no remaster! After leaving Anthrax in 1984 under circumstances he had himself to blame for, Dan Lilker formed Nuclear Assault and released a demo (“Back with Vengeance“). After reconciling with Scott Ian in 1985, Lilker became a member of the short-lived yet legendary all-star outfit S.O.D. and - due to the unexpected huge success of S.O.D.’s “Speak English or Die” album - put Nuclear Assault on hiatus. After his stint with S.O.D. was over, Lilker revived Nuclear Assault and released another demo (“Live, suffer, die“) that landed the band a deal with Combat Records. Finally, in October 1986 “Game Over“, Nuclear Assault's debut album, was released. Although the album mainly consisted of re-recordings from the demo tapes (such as “Betrayal“) and contained only a few “new“ songs (such as “Brain Death“ and “Nuclear War“), the record made a huge impact. Opening with a high-speed instrumental track (“Live, suffer, die“), “Game Over“ showcases a never before heard mixture of short hardcore/grindcore eruptions clocking in under a minute (“Hang the Pope”, “My America”) and “classic” speed/thrash metal songs (“Cold Steel”, “Stranded in Hell”). The humorous nonsense track “Mr. Softee theme”, a cover version of an ice cream commercial tune, is a welcome interlude. The track “Sin” was also an “old” song though not from the demos, but written by Lilker when he was still in Anthrax (the song was actually performed live by Anthrax during Lilker's days with the band). Being versatile musically, the lyrical concept of “Game Over” is constant highly political, critical of religion (more subtle “Nuclear War”, less subtle “Hang the Pope”), politics (“After the Holocaust”, “Vengeance”) and society (“Cold Steel”). Out of the ordinary yet characteristic is the final song, “Brain Death”, clocking in over seven minutes and somewhat “summarizing” the album. Opening with an almost two-minute long acoustic guitar intro, the song continues with trailing heavy riffs and short melodic lead guitars only to culminate in blustering core-eruptions at the end. Also included on the re-release of “Game Over” on High Roller Records (especially mastered for vinyl by Patrick W. Engel, 100% original sound, no remaster!) is the track “Lesbians”, originally featured only on the tape version of the album.

In 2013, the Canadian duo Majical Cloudz released the austere, stunning Impersonator, the album that got them out of DIY spaces and into arenas, opening for Lorde on tour. They’ve been working on a follow-up album for a while, and they just confirmed on Twitter that it will be called Are You Alone? and it’ll be out this fall on Matador. In a recent Pitchfork profile, singer Devon Welsh claims that he wrote much of the album while visiting friends in Detroit over the winter, and it seems likely to have a fuller sound;
Owen Pallett added drums, viola, and piano. But the duo seems conscious of keeping it sonic continuity, too. Pallett says, “I didn’t want to add anything superfluous.” And Welsh adds that, though the band experimented with different equipment, they didn’t end up using much of it: “After all the crazy shit we could get our hands on, we came back to the cheapo organ we’ve been using since day one.”

Limited! “I was thinking about the concept of difficulty. Whether in life or in nature - of conflict, of being troubled. The idea of friction. Also in geology, an asperity is some part of a faultline that doesn’t move which can create an earthquake, which is quite an evocative concept.” Asperities is the fourth solo album by acclaimed Canadian cellist Julia Kent. As the title suggests, this is a record born of conflict: internal, personal and global. Universal themes. The build of pressure and the threat of violent release. Modern guilt. Modern fears. Kent draws from a rich well of emotion, the pieces deceptively rendered, each feeling like a miniature dramatic epic in its own right – sculpted and self-contained. Her work on recent film scores is very much in evidence. While cinematic in scope, there is nothing as trite as a Hollywood ending here. There is tension and darkness, the edges cracked and frayed. “A lot of the melodic material is based on semitones,” Julia elaborates. “So in the music there is an inherent sense of dissonance;
that things are too close for comfort. More generally, it seems like a particularly dark time in the world right now, and I think that definitely had an influence too.” The album was recorded, produced and mixed in its entirety by Julia in her New York studio. This method of working lends the record a sense of isolation that carries a powerful resonance in our modern over-connected world. “I really like the autonomy of working alone,” she says. “I feel that I can transmit something emotionally that I might not be able to if there were someone else involved.” Utilising looped cello, electronics and found sounds, Kent creates a world where the technological and the organic merge in perfect symbiosis, the layers of sound peeling back to reveal a beating, bloody human heart at its centre. “I did quite a lot of processing of the cello sound and used different electronic textures,” she explains of her technique. “I was trying to get away from the acoustic cello sound and find one that was more textural and more expressive of the material.” Throughout the plaintive strains of opener ‘Hellebore’, the prowling grace of ‘The Leopard’, the elegant restraint of ‘Heavy Eyes’ and the immersive closer ‘Tramontana’, Kent’s cello evokes romance and loss, a yearning for simplicity. This is the soundtrack to the transitory nature of life and the inevitability of death. Vancouver-born and New York-based, Julia Kent rose to prominence with Rasputina and Antony & The Johnsons. Her extensive résumé includes recent work with Swans, Aidan Baker, Rachel Grimes, Rutger Zuydervelt, Barbara Morgenstern, Library Tapes and Khan of Finland. Kent has also composed extensively for film, theatre and dance. Her cinematic work includes the documentaries The Boxing Girls of Kabul and Rwanda, L’Impossible Pardon, American feature A Short History of Decay, short films Doppio Urlo, and the award-winning Oasis. Her music also was used in Paolo Sorrentino’s 2011 film This Must Be The Place. As a solo artist she has toured extensively in Europe and North America and performed at festivals including Primavera Sound, Reeperbahn, Unsound, and Meltdown.

The late, great J Dilla is rightly celebrated as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, in part because his ear for music was so diverse and expansive. From the smooth, soulful soundbeds he laid down for A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, The Pharcyde, Common, The Roots, and D’Angelo to the hard-edged, synth-heavy tracks he crafted for Busta Rhymes, Jaylib, Oh No, and Phat Kat, Jay Dee’s music continued to grow and evolve throughout his brief time on this planet. As Dilla’s mother Ma Dukes explains, “He didn’t come with a limited capacity, and real producers produce, produce, and produce. There are no formats for genius workers…just non-stop creations.” Now, a fresh batch of those creations will be made available to the world for the first time, in the form of the latest official J Dilla release, Dillatronic. Presented by Ma Dukes, Dillatronic contains over 40 rare instrumentals that showcase Dilla’s undeniable electronic influences. J Dilla’s music was impacted by the diverse musical history of Detroit - the birthplace of Techno and one of the most important cities in the history of electronic music. “You can hear it in songs like ‘Raise It Up’ for Slum Village or ‘Make It Hurt’ for Busta Rhymes,” says Young RJ (Dilla's protégé and member of Slum Village). “The Detroit influence is part of what gave him an edge in production.” With today’s music sounding more electronic than ever, Dillatronic has a shockingly contemporary feel. “These tracks are still ahead of their time sonically,” explains RJ. “The things producers are doing now, Dilla did that 15 years ago.” As the years go by, Ma Dukes plans to continue presenting music fans with the untold chapters in Dilla’s ever-expanding legacy. “I can smile in my heart, knowing my son’s work is being shared with the people as we planned before he passed,” she says. “I only share the best, and I only hope to continue introducing the world to the genius of J Dilla.” Available from 30.10.2015
