Coming shortly on the heels of their 2013 "mini-LP" Healing, Weird Owl are back in 2015 with a full-length LP entitled Interstellar Skeletal, once again being released by 'a' Recordings, Ltd. For the first time in their ten-year history, Weird Owl have kept the same lineup for consecutive releases, and Interstellar Skeletal reveals further explorations into the psychic canyons mined on Healing. Rather than scrapping the mission and returning to base for debriefing before attempting a relaunch, Weird Owl's strange sonic rocketry has ventured ever deeper into the vast starry expanse, and their transmissions back to Earth have grown ever freakier as a result. Their psychedelic postcards are written in the cosmic breathiness of the synthesizer and the alien ululations of a guitar tuned to secret frequencies, rumbling through the ages on illuminated rhythmic grids. Each track on Interstellar Skeletal serves as an interdimensional portal to free zones beyond the usual terrestrial veil, whether it is via odd jungle shamanism ("Silver Ziggurats"), the WWII bomber as spiritual metaphor ("Flying Fortress"), death personified as an albino lycanthrope ("White Werewolf") or the unsettling might of an extraterrestrial deity crashing a beach picnic ("God"). Interstellar Skeletal was recorded and mixed by Jeffrey Berner (Psychic TV, NAAM, Dead Stars) at Galuminum Foil Studio in Brooklyn in the fall of 2014, following Weird Owl's first-ever European tour. Although neither meticulously aped nor mindlessly conjured, the familiar influences of Spacemen 3, The 13th Floor Elevators and The Brian Jonestown Massacre continue to find a home in Weird Owl's music, perhaps mostly in spirit form. Sharon Van Etten has never needed much room to make a grand statement. With four albums during the last six years, she's become one of music's most astute new cartographers of the heart, able to capture emotional trials and triumphs with incisive lines and a voice that loses nothing in the translation and transmission of feelings. Her second record, epic, needed only seven tracks to live up to its title. 2012's Tramp and last year's Are We There, went longer, but Van Etten managed still to squeeze enormous sentiments into especially small spaces. From start to rising stardom, Van Etten has forever understood the impact of economy. It should come as no surprise, then, that the five-song EP I Don't Want to Let You Down offers documents of surrender and disappointment, admission and longing in only 22 minutes. Produced by Van Etten and Stewart Lerman, who also helmed Are We There, these songs are as sophisticated as anything Van Etten has ever done. Supported by a string section during "I Always Fall Apart," Van Etten's voice rises alongside her piano. Her prismatic harmonies betray the terror of the song's central admission and one of the new lyrical cornerstones of her catalogue: "You know I always fall apart/It's not my fault/It's just my flaw/It's who I am." During the title track, she slowly pushes her voice past an introductory murmur, as if scanning her surroundings for the resolve to be stronger and more steadfast than she knows she has been. Building across four minutes, the desperation of the title is expressed through guitars that get bigger, harmonies that get broader. The chorus is a sing-along commandment, an indelible promise Van Etten makes to be better. The War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel and David Hartley join Antibalas' Stuart Bogie, Peter Broderick and Heather Woods-Broderick for "Pay My Debts." The longest song here, it's a cinematic number that smolders like shoegaze before climaxing into an inescapable seesaw refrain. The EP ends with a live rendition of "Tell Me." A demo from Tramp, but backed here by her four-piece touring band, the tune becomes a kind of battle cry for respect and a charged pronouncement of Van Etten's cultivated powers. It's a map of the singer's progression from an acoustic songwriter to a bona fide bandleader, a reminder of the poignancy and efficiency her work has long paired. Taking the exhilaratingly huge sonic expanse that Petrels has become known for and pushing it further still, Flailing Tomb draws on a breathtaking sonic palette of influences and instrumentation to craft perhaps the strongest Petrels release to date. Flailing Tomb's underlying theme is a many-layered obsession with - and joyous celebration of - the defiance in persisting with lost causes. Building on the mythological foundations of previous albums - Haeligewielle, Onkalo and Mima - Flailing Tomb takes an underlying current that ran beneath each of these and pushes it to the fore. Flailing Tomb draws inspiration from sources as wide-ranging as Ursula K. Le Guin's speculative fiction, Indian-Celtic connections, self-mummification, Jude The Apostle (patron saint of lost causes), and Jean-Luc Godard's seminal sci-fi masterpiece, Alphaville (much of the second-half of the album is adapted from music originally written as an alternate score to the film), weaving all this and more into six intricately-layered parts - at once forthright and ambiguous. With a much broader range of instrumentation and contributors than previous Petrels albums - from the melodic cacophony of album opener We Are Falling Into the Heart Of The Sun, to the euphoric choral backdrop of Orpheus with a lead vocal from NEVER SOL and the epic motorik finale of L. Limited first pressing > Individually hand-painted sleeves > Recorded and mixed live by Niagara. A couple of years have passed and a ton of material has been amassed after the sold out "Ouro Oeste EP". It's a given fact from the very beginning that Niagara are a prolific bunch. From their HQ to the north of Lisbon, the trio puts together some of the most organically synthetic house music we hear these days. May sound like a contradiction but bear in mind practically everything you hear on this EP is played live (including a most charismatic electric bass). Even the final mix is done live. "Arruda" has an infectious vocal snippet leading procedures, morphing from an indistinguishable bleep into a recognizable voice. Discreet and stylish use of string sounds and tambourine, a bassline made up of a repeated "acid" pattern plus the usual chunky midtempo signature beat. "Arruda" happens to be the surname of brothers Alberto and Antonio, joined in Niagara by Sarah Eckerman; "Abacaxi Limao" introduces live bass as the anchor of the whole groove, wild background percussion, and those chunky chunky beats add a robotic step. By now it's quite clear how Niagara sound like; "Legume" opens side B with a small burst of distortion. Then it's all about the interplay between the deepest bass and playful keys. Everything becomes more spacey and pastoral on the second half, culminating with a flute comedown; "Cheetah" sounds like a lost Chicago classic, never giving in to smoothness. It's familiar but also hard to pinpoint. Major contribution to the hypnosis induced by these moderately slow but hard-stepping beats; "Alagarta" shoots out with a million rays of sunlight in a joyous manifestation of happiness on the dancefloor, though it is far from being the typical functional dance track. It's here that the live production ethics of Niagara are clearly perceptible and we can't help but show a broad smile when the cascade of bleeps leads to the conclusion.
