A British export success story, hard rock band Voodoo Vegas has announced details of their second album. Titled 'Freak Show Candy Floss' (out 4th November via PHD), VOODOO VEGAS new release features ten modern rock tracks, oozing showmanship and demonstrating just how far the band has come since the release of 2013's debut album 'The Rise Of Jimmy Silver' and last year's EP 'Hypnotise'. There's no doubt this new album by VOODOO VEGAS rocks hard, whilst maintaining its roots in real life, wax lyrical content on all songs, like the powerful swagger of 'Backstabber', to the venomous, bluesy bite of 'Poison', whilst the sublime acoustic ballad 'Sleeping In The Rain' tackles the emotional subject matter of homelessness. With lead track 'Killing Joke', the band's vision of a sick twisted society (Nobody's laughing, they're smiling through the pain) will soon be realised, courtesy of a new music video. Final track on the album 'Walk Away' is the heaviest song the band has put to record and showcases how well Voodoo Vegas mix the light and shade of rock. Recorded at Los Rosales Studios in Moralzarzal, Spain, 'Freak Show Candy Floss' was engineered and produced by Guillermo Will Maya (The Answer). 'Freak Show Candy Floss' is the first music written entirely with the new Voodoo Vegas line up. Where some bands find it hard to write their sophomore album, Voodoo Vegas had a tone of energy going into the writing of this album and it didn't feel like writing our second album, it felt like this was our first. Working with Will again (Maya produced last year's 'Hypnotise' EP, which featured the debut of this current line up) was a no brainer. Graham Bonnet is a rock legend. With a pedigree that includes RAINBOW, MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP, ALCATRAZZ and IMPELLITTERI, he is one of the finest vocalists of his generation. Third World Pyramid is the first album that was fully recorded & produced at Anton's new Cobra Studio in Berlin . It is the 15th full length release from the Brian Jonestown Massacre recorded from early 2016. Featuring Ricky Maymi, Dan Allaire, Joel Gion, Collin Hegna & Ryan Van Kriedt from the band. Also Emil Nikolaisen from the Norwegian band Serena-Maneesh joins BJM on this album, plus vocal performance Tess Parks and Katy Lane. Anton Newcombe has been a very busy man these past two years, kicking off with the critically acclaimed Brian Jonestown Massacre album 'Revelation' in May 2014. After a successful UK and European tour, the BJM followed this up with the '+-'EP (Nov 2014). 2015 saw the release of 'Musique de film imaginé' (April); an imaginary film soundtrack album featuring the track 'Bonbon' which has, ironically, been used in 'Dheepan'; the Palme D'or winner at Cannes film festival 2015. In June, Anton and Tess Parks embarked on a well received tour of the UK and Europe to support the release of 'I Declare Nothing'. Baby Woodrose is an iconic band on the Danish psych scene who released their debut album Blows Your Mind back in 2001. Long before psychedelic music had a revival frontman Lorenzo Woodrose and his band came up with their own mix of psych, garage and stoner rock which they have refined during the years. The new album is called Freedom and is due out September 16th 2016 on Bad Afro Records. Freedom is the 7th album by Baby Woodrose and is released more than four years after the previous album Third Eye Surgery came out in 2012. In the meantime Lorenzo has been busy with his other band Spids Nogenhat who gained a lot of popularity in Denmark and won two Danish Grammies for the album "Kommer Med Fred". Best rock album of the year and Best live band of the year. The title Freedom reflects on the current state of our society and how it affects us all. Consciously or not. The album introduces the modern slave song. Lorenzo Woodrose: "The inspiration for the album came from the title track, a cover we have been playing around with for about a year. Mostly known for the version Richie Havens improvised on Woodstock in 1969, it is actually a much older song, known as a gospel tune, a negro spiritual or a "slave song". This expression gave me the idea to write modern day slave songs, so all the songs on the new album deal with mind control, brainwash, hamster wheels, slavery and oppression". All Baby Woodrose albums have a different vibe and this time there has been an analogue approach to recording the nine songs. The whole album is recorded and mixed on tape, givng it a very rockband live-in-the-studio type of feel. This means no cut and paste and a minimal amount of overdubs. The album is produced by Anders Onsberg and Baby Woodrose in the STC studio in Copenhagen and mastered by Flemming Rasmussen at Sweet Silence. 180g! How can you describe a musical quantum leap? Maybe it’s best to explain it in numbers. Flügge [meaning “independent” or “to spread one’s wings” in German] is 44 minutes and 41 seconds long, includes 14 songs and 13 instruments divided by two musicians drawing on at least ten different musical spheres of influence. Sampling and digital post production: zero. The second album by Berlin duo Odd Couple has become an eclectic mix that doesn’t fit too easily into a category. When Tammo Dehn and Jascha Kreft were working on their debut “It's A Pressure To Meet You”, which was released two years ago, they were still at the primordial soup stage of sultry garage-rock. Flügge outgrew the age-old framework of guitar, bass and drums with a confident vehemence. The record breathes rock music, speaking the language of the Blues with riffs in widescreen and keyboards under cover of night, but nevertheless structured by the skeleton of a modern interpretation of Krautrock and the repetitive punching beat of classic hip-hop productions. The result is a sound that the German music scene has not yet heard. Flügge consistently directs its gaze inwards. Six years after their arrival in Berlin – a circus of coolness, drugs and trendy hang outs – the two kindergarten buddies from Ostfriesland still feel somewhat out of place. So, what should they do? Another satirical outcry, like their debut? No, instead they had a rummage around in their own “Gehirnkasten” (“brain boxes”), to name one of the songs on Flügge. “We made a conscious decision to be introspective,” explains Dehn. “On one hand, we can’t exclude ourselves from the criticism, but on the other hand something had developed in us over the years that we just had to get out”. Initially this included the typical ingredients of pop: love, pain, anxiety, overwork and instability. But the duo managed to do this without losing sight of their humorous, albeit caustic, take on their own contradictions – and, consequently, those of a whole generation. “Our age group is living out the self-discovery only dreamed about by our parents which, ironically, has been made possible by a lifestyle that people reject today – a normal job and a savings account” says Dehn. “We wanted to examine this position.” This is particularly evident in the title song “Flügge” in which Odd Couple describe a trip to California – “Es war schön, Mami!”(“It was really good, Mommy!”) – which led to their supposed enlightenment about life: “Ich glaub’, ich hab’s verstanden” (“I think I understood it”). The problem is that it takes more than just going on a journey by yourself or joining a yoga class for beginners to formulate a theory of everything. It is more a case of life throwing you a never-ending cycle of challenges that constantly change and in the end most people are none the wiser for it. Why is that? “Let's go online so you can choose out of it,” suggest Odd Couple on the album’s moody highlight “Très Mello”, declaring, “Too many options make me feel like I'm lost.” We want to have our cake and eat it too. City and tranquillity. Nature and infrastructure. Forest and electricity. Preferably with Wi-Fi. The fact that this social criticism works so well musically is based on the band’s own self-observations. “Flügge feels like our first real album,” says Kreft. “This is us, here and now.” It’s easy to see why. Before its release in 2014, their self-produced debut album was left to stew for exactly two years and three months on their home computer’s hard drive. For “Flügge” however, it was the other way around. The album was recorded in full within just a few weeks, mixed by Dehn himself and mastered by Kai Blankenberg. “It was refreshing,” says Dehn. “Some songs only materialized once we’d started the sessions.” This meant that technical crutches were largely prohibited. Despite its sonic diversity, all of Flügge was performed; nothing was sampled. “We wanted to take on the challenge of producing a modern sound using analog resources” the duo explained, “Basically, we want to be anything but a retro band.” With Flügge, Odd Couple have certainly made the grade. Although the record helps itself to parts from the rock warehouse, it doesn’t simply rebuild what has gone before. Songs like “Orbit Traveller” or “Serve” are daydreams in song format, “Am I Evil” features riffs and distortion pedal in just the right places and “Go Sees” with its falsetto chorus is a little masterpiece. References or comparisons would be out of place at this point. Flügge stands on its own. Odd Couple belong to a time when rock music is almost desperately seeking its own identity – a positive anachronism. Their version of rock can sure tell us a thing or two... and it’s fun!
