Cologne Curiosities" collects, for the first time on vinyl, all the otherwise unpublished/un-reissued material that firstly appeared on the three "Unknown Deutschland - The Krautrock Archive" CDs released on Virgin during 1996. These CD only releases were originally compiled by Trevor Manwaring (Paratactile, Impetus, Virgin, Harmonia Mundi) from tapes supplied to him by Toby Robinson. Toby - aka The Mad Twiddler, aka Genius P. Orridge - is well-known to Krautrock collectors as one of a number of engineers working at Stockhausen's WDR and Dierks Studio in Cologne in the mid-1970's, where he assisted on recordings by many famous Kraut bands such as Can, Birth Control, Mythos or Dzyan. The recordings included here were made between 1972 and 1976 using studios in and around Cologne, produced by Toby Robinson for his own amusement, just having fun on the studio. Bands would come in for practice sessions, to record demo's, and during slack periods impromptu jams would happen. Most of these sessions were recorded by Toby, and they feature Toby himself plus a revolving cast of friends and musicians (some of them apparently big Kraut names under pseudonym). Including lost-in-time bands / studio projects like Astral Army, Fuerrote, Spirulina and Baal among others, the music here ranges from killer proto-New Wave Kraut psych to wild space rock, proto-ambient electronic, dark psychedelia and raw Kosmische sounds with lot of analog synths / Moog. It was during that time in Cologne, that Toby, along with Fluxus artist Robin Page, gave birth to the mysterious and controversial Pyramid label, for which these tracks were originally made for.

First vinyl reissue of this 1972 collaboration between Graham Bond and Pete Brown. A brilliant multi-genre crossover celebration: bluesy rock with a funky twist, jazzy prog passages... Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. Graham Bond and Pete Brown need little introduction. Bond was a key figure of the early British jazz and R&B scenes. His Graham Bond Organisation recorded several albums and the band's members (Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, John McLaughlin and Dick Heckstall-Smith) achieved massive fame in their later careers. Pete Brown was a Cream/Jack Bruce collaborator. After being thrown out of his own band, Pete Brown & His Battered Ornaments, he formed another group: Piblokto! Dangerous habits, mental health issues and little commercial success were seriously affecting their careers on the verge of the 70s and a series of unfortunate events made Graham Bond and Pete Brown find themselves in limbo. They then decided to team up for a new band project, resulting in the recording of "Two Heads Are Better Than One" in 1972. The album included songs like ost Tribe' and ooking For Time' as an attempt to express the fact that Pete and Graham were now on the outside of the rock scene in the early 70s or G The Pig', dedicated to a dubious record label head after the band found out their fee was not going to end in their bank account. The album is a brilliant multi-genre crossover celebration: bluesy rock with a funky twist, jazzy prog passages. It was Graham Bond's last album and probably his best work.

On the 22nd August they played at Cleveland, Ohio’s famous venue the Agora Ballroom (their third visit to the venue on the same tour) supporting Mink Deville. The show, in front of an estimated 2,000 people, was a triumph and the whole shebang was broadcast across local FM radio - the results of which can be heard on this superb limited edtion picture disc.

Nine Suns, One Morning’ is the third album from The Silence since their formation in Tokyo in July of 2014. The Silence transpose ecstatic moments from the rock and roll dreamscape into all-new, living music. ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ is one of the most explosive, far-ranging albums you could hope to hear in 2016. The Silence employ a great variety of instruments with tremendous discipline, always in service of the songs, which share a goal of finding new lines of expression, no matter where the starting point. While ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ is a fully-developed album of modern rock and roll that moves fluidly between all styles of music, many listeners are still unaware of The Silence, who have yet to tour outside of Japan but are anxious to do so. Masaki Batoh is the leader of the group, which he formed after dissolving the legendary Ghost in 2014. Forming the sound of The Silence, Batoh draws upon the indigenous and the mysterious aspects of the spiritual world, as exemplified by Western rock, blues and British traditional music. He is supported in his endeavour by keyboardist and Bulgarian Tambula player (and original Ghost member) Kazuo Ogino, jazz saxophonist Ryuichi Yoshida, bassist Jan Stigter and drummer Futoshi Okano (Subvert Blaze, Hijokaidan). These musicians bring together a combined understanding of different values of music, literature, film, culture, psychology, philosophy and the spirit world that informs and expands everything they play together as they work to transcend the illusions of music that have existed until now. Previous album ‘Hark The Silence’ emphasized the solvent quality of open air and the liquidity of free-flowing improvisation from which songs might eventually appear. ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ departs from the brooding gothic skies under which ‘Hark the Silence’s slow-boiling jams unfolded, revisiting the song-based fixation that marked The Silence’s debut album. The difference this time is that the deep space accessed on ‘Hark The Silence’ strikes into the new songs, infusing them with wider reach and greater cosmic power than before. The song orientation of ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ is further expressed by the inclusion of two cover versions. ‘Louie Louie’, the most elemental of rock songs, is shaken violently in best Silence fashion, while ‘No Expectations’ is given a gossamer gospel treatment. From honking sax to jazz time signatures to squalling psychedelic guitars, The Silence celebrate the transformative fusions of rock and roll music with everything that they do. ‘Motion Set’ is the ninth Major Stars album and their first on Drag City since 2010’s ‘Return To Form’, with ‘Decibels Of Gratitude’ appearing in 2012. Wayne Rogers and Kate Biggar have been crossing axes to head-scrambling effect since the halcyon days of Crystallized Movements in the 1980s. In the 1990s came collaboration with Damon & Naomi in Magic Hour and Wayne Rogers solo records before the debut of Major Stars at Terrastock 1997 - the first of several appearances they eventually made at the now-defunct (and legendary) trips fest. As the years have passed the band has evolved necessarily in their own expanding universe;
since 2005, the Biggar-Rogers guitar duo has become a guitar trio, with original bassist Tom Leonard contributing to the murder of decibels. Vocally as well, Wayne’s lead vocals have given way to a string of she-singers who have brought new dimensions to the Major Stars’ sound. Every Major Stars record responds in one way or another to the one before and to that end ‘Motion Set’ commenced with a blackout-and-start-again moment: the pulsing energy of ‘Alert’, with a view towards making more super-happy short blues rock songs. Of course, things happen along the assembly line;
the title track was played for over two years and thrown away at least once before revisitation, revitalization and recording finally happened. Now, stripped down to a mood and built back to a towering frenzy it’s the kind of song to name an album after. In a band built to achieve moments of six-string nirvana, vocalist Hayley Thompson-King provides a sufficiently versatile presence to span the crunching, ever-spiralling trinity of Biggar, Leonard and Rogers;
with sirenesque flights, a reedy, Nico-like introspection and gritty, pugnacious flourishes to match the full complement of riffs being flung about. Major Stars have been capturing and distilling lightning into bottles for a couple of decades, with each record reaching beyond what they know and delighting in what feels good to locate their desire for exploration, obliteration and rock in the present moment. ‘Motion Set’ nullifies the past while standing on its vanishing shoulders, reaching ever beyond.

Sweet Creature is an exciting new hard rock band fronted by Martin Sweet, best known as lead guitarist for Swedish sleaze rockers CRASHDIET. BACKGROUND: Martin Sweet has been a member of CRASHDIET for over a decade with 4 albums and extensive global touring under his belt. Linus, a studio technician and death metal guitarist, has a long history of writing and recording with Martin. Sweet Creature was originally an experiment that began in 2014 with the goal of recording a simple four-song EP. The project, however, was so gratifying for the two that the decision to make an album and form a new band was inevitable.

With his latest record, Notwist singer & guitar player, film soundtracker and label boss Markus Acher, aka Rayon, offers up a sparse, intoxicating LP of instrumentals. As the name suggests, the spaces between notes here are treated with as much gravity as the notes themselves – arpeggios spiralling upwards, conflicting yet interlocking in a dizzying overlap of time signatures. An obvious reference point is Javanese gamelan, with its ensemble of hand-beaten metallophones and bamboo flutes, pulling in all directions at once and yet, like a starling murmuration, maintaining shape as one, rippling whole. Eschewing electronic equipment, the title track sees marimbaphone, piano and vibraphone appearing to mimic a delay pedal, giving the effect of rain falling with odd regiment into a singing bowl. This melancholy but weirdly uplifting arrangement surfaces throughout the record, punctuated by mossy synth hums and subterranean rustling. Like much of Rayon’s work, “A Beat of Silence” beams across like a soundtrack for some forgotten documentary: dusty archive footage of cities being built and eroded in time-lapse seeming to flicker across the screen. Closing tracks “To the Quiet”, a tentative, almost impossibly fragile ballad, and “Kona”, a stretched and mangled wash of orchestral drone akin to Plinth or Edmund Finnis, leave the listener fully enveloped, as this incredibly sensitive work draws to a close.
