Recorded direct to lathe cut, this pair of spontaneous creations teams two Berlin-based horn players with two New Yorkers of broad-ranging vision. Talibam! (Matt Mottel and Kevin Shea) is a 14-year working unit based in New York City that can be described in various ways - as a classic keyboards / drums expanded-jazz duo, as Dadaist provocateurs with an innate love for the history of music, as a Fluxus-informed theater troupe, as an electronic ensemble inspired by Stockhausen, or as a rhythm section at the cross hair of agility, speed, punctuation, and intention. Since their inception in 2003, Talibam!’s ultimate goal has been to wed disparate ideologies through proficiency, controversy, inquiry, and compassion. This is their fifth release on ESP-Disk’. Silke Eberhard is the recipient of the prestigious 2020 Jazzprize Berlin. Twice she has been awarded a spot in the 'Rising Star Alto Saxophone' category in the Downbeat Critics poll. Leader of the Silke Eberhard Trio and the Dectett Potsa Lotsa XL, she has also played with Maggie Nicols, Aki Takase, Gerry Hemingway, Ulrich Gumpert, Dave Burrell, Wayne Horvitz, and more and is a member of the collective trio I Am Three. Nikolaus Neuser, also in I Am Three, has played with Gebhard Ullmann, Matthias Schubert, Maggie Nicols, Matana Roberts, Matthew Herbert, Tyshawn Sorey, Nate Wooley, Satoko Fujii, Benny Bailey, Herb Geller, etc. His main interest lies in the border areas between jazz, free improvisation, and transdisciplinary projects. Furthermore he has composed music for several plays, was a guest professor at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá, and appears on more than 50 CDs

When noise or other unpleasant sounds are superimposed with white noise, the human ear perceives them as less loud and disturbing. This healing principle from psychoacoustics can be wonderfully transferred to music - as bassist Martin Wind impressively demonstrates. Born in Flensburg, Wind is one of the German figureheads in the New York jazz scene. For his album "White Noise" he has brought two "jazz icons of the highest order" into the studio. In the early 1900s Béla Bartók was introduced to the folk music of the Romanian people in Transylvania. His immediate infatuation with the music led him to a lifelong pursuit to record and catalog these beautiful regional pieces. Bartók spent eight years traveling the Romanian countryside recording and transcribing these pieces, which he would spend the rest of his life collating into six catalogs containing over three thousand tunes, simply entitled Romanian Folk Music. The composer’s own compositions would be influenced at every level by his folk studies. Lucian Ban grew up along Bartók’s collecting path in Transylvania and by the end of the ‘90s he would leave Romania to pursue his career in jazz music in New York City

Pianist, composer and arranger Carolina Calvache on her new album: “Vida Profunda is an ode to poetry and to life. The chosen poems and my original lyrics are the best vehicles for me to open my heart to the world because they relate to events that happened in my life or to people close to me. The title song comes from the poem Canción de la Vida Profunda (Song of the Profound Life) by Colombian writer Porfirio Barba Jacob. The second title “El Pájaro Yo” (The Me Bird) has the same name as the original poem by Chilean writer Pablo Neruda. The text of the song “Hope” is extracted from the poem “Lift every voice and sing” by African-American poet James Weldon Johnson. The song “Childhood Retreat” is based on the poem with the same name written by American poet Robert Duncan. “El Rastro” is extracted from the short story “El Rastro de tu sangre en la nieve” (The trail of your blood in the snow) by Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Márquez. The song “Let Me Come With You” is extracted by the poem “Moonlight Sonata” by Greek poet Yiannis Ritsos. The original songs “No te vi crecer”, “Te conocí de nuevo”, “Stella”, “Sin un Despido”, are some of my stories and my first attempt to write lyrics.”

The question must be screaming in your mind. In 2015, I started my jazz journey. Even I thought it would end, but the spirits of sound, they keep pulling at me. At times, I've danced with the demons of malaise and grappled with the warlocks of uncertainty. This collection represents a rebirth/afterbirth. A reforming of what I have done and what has been done before me. A voyage into a more futuristic soundscape, like a drunk (very drunk), crazed cosmonaut's first spacewalk. A burnt offering to the Gods of Providence-Gods that take from us mercilessly the corpuscular light of what we give, fractured through our prism of inability. My work may be an affront, but is our collective affront. My sins are unwavering but my jazz is my confession; each note a cleansing; the sound of the squeezing of an overripe peach and the juice putrid. These songs, like spumes of spite, are sufferings, profane grumbles, and they weave their thread into your soul like falcon's talons into the belly of a bunny. Every compression is an impression (not sure what this means) but I think I'm talking about compressing the keys on the keyboard. But in them all are 'sharts of hope'. I crash expectations. I throw poo in the face of my oppressors. I scream like a baby bird to the legions. I, by my own hand, mock the clouds for forming, cry ecstatic till temples crumble. Miles Davis’s Birth of The Cool sessions, were recorded in 1949 and 1950 and released in 1957. More than fifty years later, when young trumpeter Bobby Spellman purchased a CD of these recordings, he became enchanted with the music. Spellman’s fascination with these performances led him to chase that same spirit for his own collection of nonet recordings, Revenge of the Cool. Spellman found after studying the scores that much of the attraction came from the unique colors and textures that were generated by the unique mid-sized ensemble along with the unique compositional style that lent itself to both jazz and classical styles, prefacing the Third Stream movement that would come soon after. Could there be a more fitting metaphor for the duo of accordionist Vincent Peirani and soprano saxophonist Émile Parisien? "It's like a marriage," says Peirani. "In the beginning everything’s just great, wonderful, paradise. But of course, after a while, it also becomes challenging, which is quite normal.
