‘The Aura‘ and the belief in it can be found in almost all cultures in one form or another. Often signifying fields of energy and spirituality, an aura is a luminous radiational halo surrounding a person or object. It is said that all objects and all living things manifest such an aura. In other respects the aura has also been described as a map of the thoughts and feelings surrounding a person. Pieced together from sounds and samples from all over the globe, the album’s aim is to charge listeners with harmony and a feeling of connectedness to the world. Reflecting on his own attitude towards life and the importance of inner balance, Pavel attempts to share some of the spiritual experiences he made while traveling. The lengthy process of creation included numerous reworks of each track and intensive listening sessions in order to keep the balance between the essential details and those that are redundant to the album’s atmosphere. The album includes collaborations with old friends like Mujuice, Graciela Maria as well as some newly added artists – L.A. rapper BLU, Starving Yet Full – ex-vocalist from Azari III and Mitia Dedoni, who created the haunting album cover. ‘The Aura‘ comes out worldwide on limited grey-marbled vinyl (including download code).

Esmé Patterson doesn’t seem to have herself all figured out, but then again, who does? The singer-songwriter considers herself a purveyor of folk ‘n’ roll, but her sound also veers towards baroque pop and airy rock beats. Patterson started out with the Denver-based folk ensemble, Paper Bird, which she later left to pursue a solo career. Now residing in Portland, Oregon, she releases her new 12-track album, We Were Wild. On the album cover, we see Esmé herself wearing a black leather collar with a dangling heart-shaped pendant that reads her name. There’s a chain attached to the choker, but we can’t see who’s towing the end of the line. Not to worry, none of this screams BDSM as Patterson looks out blankly, chin extended with her face as soft and placid as ever. This seems to be a stark departure from her last installment, Woman to Woman, which was all about running free and breaking those proverbial shackles. In the seven-track fan-fiction reverie, she assumes the voices of women whose names were immortalized in song;
think Dolly Parton’s “Jolene”, The Beatles’s “Eleanor Rigby”, and Elvis Costello’s “Allison”. Patterson wanted to make heroines out of manic pixie dream girls, and the EP was both lauded for being conceptually brilliant and criticized for tinkering with the greats. Three years later, she produces an album that is all about her, and we have an inkling that this is Patterson’s belated liberation of her own soul, finally wilding out alongside those of music’s past. It’s funny, because that interpretation becomes troubling when we consider the title of the album. Patterson knows that she was wild once, but what is she now? Her songs are all about those polarities, the contradictions that can hardly be pried apart with our fumbling fingers. “Without feeling wrong, how can we know what feels right?” she asks us on the title track, “Feel Right.” The feedback blares right away, and Patterson brings us onto her cognitive caravan, swerving in a way that feels so true to the motions of the human consciousness. After all, there’s so much back-and-forth in the way we think: Am I this or am I that? Should I do this or should I not? Through her lyrics, Patterson sends the synapses into turbulence—forking, converging, and seeping into the cyclical movements of her thoughts and memories. While this might be chaotic, it’s also disarmingly beautiful and gives her listeners motion sickness in the best way possible. She does try to organize the refuse of these thoughts at times, and “No River” is probably her best attempt at that. Patterson sings, “I know that I’m alive today, but.” The fact that this line lingers on a dreaded, yet anticipated ‘but’ is unsettling, and she knows it. Her music is like the time-honored duck or rabbit optical illusion. We don’t know if we’re listening to something that is full of certainty or something completely misguided, but it doesn’t matter as long as we’re aware of the calculated effect. We Were Wild hushes as it meanders along, finding its most instrumentally distilled moment in the acoustic number, “Find It”. The energetic basslines and Patterson’s hoots are temporarily dispelled, as she finds herself doused in the sheen of a love that she likens to a diamond. Patterson ends the EP with “Alone”, asking us if we’ve ever felt exquisitely at one. It’s an apt coda to such an internally probing album, but we don’t feel any less disoriented than we did when it started. Esmé Patterson’s newest installment might not be as clear-headed as the preceding one, but she lets us in on a deeply human concept. The most intrepid journey that we can take is into ourselves

Last year, Pearson Sound put out the first artist album on Hessle Audio, and now co-founder Kevin McAuley gets his turn. In Drum Play is similar in character to Pearson Sound: no-frills, under an hour long and homing in on its producer's idiosyncrasies. But instead of being hermetic and understated, In Drum Play practically leaps off the turntable. From eyes-down bangers like "Memories" to the jerky techno of "Viaduct,", McAuley has long made music that offsets its darker undertones with ecstatic rhythms. His DJ sets, including his banner Fabriclive mix, are heavy on European techno with a spring in its step. That style is exemplified across In Drum Play, one of McAuley's most adventurous and sprightly records yet. Use your imagination and "Bulb In Zinc," with its wobbly LFO bassline and whip-crack drums, could be a Hessle Audio track from 2008. "One By One" is another with an older flavour—powerful strings, yelping vocals, trembling basslines—and it fidgets nervously, with an almost giddy sense of motion. "More Is More To Burn" is a twitchy, Objekt-style sprint with vocal samples smeared on top like vaseline—a fine encapsulation of McAuley's odd brand of techno. "Skips Desk" has a happy-go-lucky synth that wouldn't have been out of place on an old Numbers 12-inch. In Drum Play's sound design is excellent, shining through on two shorter tracks that would seem like pointless diversions if they weren't so sumptuous. On the other hand, McAuley sometimes overcooks the music, like on the overstuffed "Lofty Can" or the 114 BPM dirge "Send It In," whose torpid tempo drags the album's momentum down during its closing run. Maybe the biggest hint of where McAuley's head is at comes at the very end. At 140 BPM, "DNS" could have been a dubstep throwback, nodding to the days when Hessle Audio was still a promising upstart. But it's actually a techno monster, built to rival the more conventional producers that McAuley often plays out. The strength and vibrancy of "DNS" shows that he could have made an album of techno bangers and got away with it. Instead, In Drum Play is a vibrant, diverse record that captures the best of Pangaea's singular style, looking backward as much as forward.

Russ Wilkins (Bass) When punk rock group the Pop Rivets broke up in 1980, Billy Childish joined forces with Mickey Hampshire, a Pop Rivets roadie who had been performing in a group called Mickey and the Milkshakes with his cohort Banana Bertie. The two began writing songs together and the group released their first LP, Talking 'bout Milkshakes! in 1981. With Childish and Hampshire sharing guitar and vocal duties, Bruce Brand on drums, and Bertie on bass (later replaced by Russ Wilkins then John Agnew), the Milkshakes' sound was a primitive blend of British beat groups, like the early Kinks at their toughest, and hard-rocking American guitar instrumentalists like Link Wray. This sound came to be known as the "Medway sound" and the core members have been playing a variation on it throughout their whole careers. The Milkshakes were a very prolific group, recording nine records in their four years together, and the band was very much a blend of Childish's primitive songwriting and Hampshire's more melodic leanings. The group also masterminded and backed a Medway girl group, the Delmonas. When Mickey left The Milkshakes in 1984 Childish, Brand and Agnew went on to form Thee Mighty Caesars. Mickey and Bruce now play in The Masonics along with Ludella Black from The Del Monas, and Russ lives in Scotland and fronts the Wildebeests as well as being Lord Rochester.

180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL GATEFOLD SLEEVE MONO Blind Willie McTell (May 5, 1898 - August 19, 1959) was a Piedmont blues and ragtime singer and guitarist. He played with a fluid, syncopated fingerstyle guitar technique, common among many exponents of Piedmont blues. Unlike his contemporaries, he came to use twelve-string guitars exclusively. McTell was also an adept slide guitarist, unusual among ragtime bluesmen. His vocal style, a smooth and often laid-back tenor, differed greatly from many of the harsher voices of Delta bluesmen such as Charley Patton. McTell's influence extended over a wide variety of artists, including the Allman Brothers Band, who covered his "Statesboro Blues," and Bob Dylan, who paid tribute to him in his 1983 song "Blind Willie McTell," the refrain of which is "And I know no one can sing the blues like Blind Willie McTell." Other artists influenced by McTell include Taj Mahal, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Ralph McTell, Chris Smither and the White Stripes.

180g. Rodrigo Leão first met Scott Matthew on the path to A Montanha Mágica (The Magic Mountain), his 2011 album. Scott lent his extraordinary voice to the song “Terrible Dawn”, which paved the way to his participation on some live shows in Portugal and Spain and further studio work. Rodrigo has always been an avid collaborator, having worked with such diverse voices as Beth Gibbons (Portishead) or Brazilian singer Adriana Calcanhoto, among so many others. But “Terrible Dawn”, first, and “Incomplete”, afterwards, proved there was a special chemistry between the two. A Portuguese composer with his eyes set on the world, an Australian singer living in New York. Worlds apart, yet so close. An inventor of magical melodies and a self described “quiet noise maker”. Impossible to resist such an exotic pairing. Scott and Rodrigo have quietly and discretely been working together. Both have very busy schedules, Rodrigo having been deeply involved in film scores, including such boxoffice smashes as The Butler or La Cage Dorée. Scott is busy building a strong solo discography of five albums, contributed several songs for soundtracks of such successful films as John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus or guesting alongside Sia. But quietly both have been trading melodies and words, sending each other ideas that shall result in a collaborative album in 2016: Rodrigo handling the composition and production and Scott taking care of the lyrics, melody and vocals. Those who have seen them both on stage know how rich these encounters can be, how Scott’s deep and sweet voice and Rodrigo’s melodies and orchestrations can be joined in perfection.

First vinyl reissue of this 1966 easy listening/Latin masterpiece by Mark Wirtz, of 'Grocer Jack' and "A Teenage Opera" fame and in-house producer for EMI at Abbey Road in the mid/late 60s. Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl. Mark Wirtz's most famous output was recorded during the mid/late 60s when he was working as in-house producer for EMI at Abbey Road. His "Mood Mosaic" LP and the unfinished concept album "A Teenage Opera" (a single off this LP, 'Grocer Jack', was actually released in 1967) provided Wirtz with an iconic status among easy listening collectors. However, his lesser known 1966 album "Latin A Go-Go" is the one to have if you aim to hit the dancefloor. The title of this album may not be very original but perfectly describes the music inside. Think of wild cocktail parties in sunny California in the mid-60s, cosmopolitan hotel lounges in Copacabana or the hippest clubs in Swinging London and you'll get a picture of what the perfect scenario for playing this LP looks like. However, it seems that only a few people needed this vibe in their average lives when the record was originally released in the UK, Netherlands and Spain (often under different titles and cover art) and copies have vanished over the years. 50 years after it was first released, it looks like the right time to enjoy again this masterpiece of 'Latin a go-go' music that includes just about every classic hit you could expect: atermelon Man', 'Comin' Home, Baby', eh, Yeh'. It features the likes of Barbara Moore (from the legendary library music album "Vocal Shades And Tones") on chorus vocals, Jim Sullivan (Lord Sitar) on guitar and the prolific session player Vic Flick.

Lorenzo Senni releases his first EP on Warp Records after announcing his signing to the label;
in Persona Senni explores his fascination with the intricacies of trance music and culture, a logical expansion of the key themes in previous releases Quantum Jelly and Superimpositions. The track Rave Voyeur is somewhat synonymous of Lorenzo himself, an observer and purveyor of the genre. The latter seamlessly shifts between movements, a foundation suggestive of krautrock and early electronic music, gorgeously ornamented with perfectly placed piano and horns. Drawing upon a diverse palate of influences and transcending each one, it's a stunning piece of work-certainly one of the most impressive achievements of Lambchop's catalogue.

KHONSU is an extreme metal band from Bergen, Norway that features guest appearances by members of KEEP OF KALESSIN and MANES. The music has a dark futuristic twist with a sinister blend of metal and electronic elements. In 2012 KHONSU signed with French label Season of Mist - sharing the roster with bands like MAYHEM and ROTTING CHRIST - and released their debut album “Anomalia”, which had Thebon from KEEP OF KALESSIN on vocals, later that year.
