With "Towards Language" trumpeter Arve Henriksen is back with his trusted long time musical partners Jan Bang and Erik Honoré. Arve first collaborated with the pair on the much loved and highly praised "Chiaroscuro" (2004), Arve's second album, and later on "Cartography" (ECM 2008) and "Places Of Worship" (2013). Also an important part of the line-up is Eivind Aarset, the ECM associated guitarist extraordinaire. "Towards Language" is Arve's ninth album (eight on Rune Grammofon and one on ECM) under his own name, in addition he has collaborated on records with artists like David Sylvian, Jon Balke, Christian Wallumrod, Trygve Seim and Trio Mediaeval, as well as a dozen albums as founder member of free noise trio Supersilent. Arve has never been short of praise when it comes to expressing the importance his collaborators and musicians have on the creative process. Asked to comment on his new album, and its title, here's what he has to say: "To express something on your own can be quite challenging at times. I have for years been in creative collaborations with musicians and producers that have ecouraged and inspired me. With this help and inspiration to discover new sounds and music I have struggled and made my way to gradually be able to create some sort of language and a way of telling stories with my trumpet and singing. They have all coloured and gradually transformed me through different artistic timezones that I have passed through. All the information, concerts, discussions and impressions have had a significant impact on the process of gradually coming closer towards the core of communication through music. With this recording, the good help and inspirational artistic contributions from Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang at the recording session in Oslo has led to these selected tracks. Music that has a connection to "Places of Worship", but this time recorded "live" in the studio in a chamber music like approach inspired by contemporary elements from composers like Toru Takemitsu and Manuel de Falla, to traditional organ music, and at the end of the album bringing in a traditional "kven" (ancient Nordic song tradition) theme from the roots of my family from the North of Norway, sung by Anna Maria Friman of Trio Mediaeval. Art of Propaganda is proud to present Gloson's highly anticipated debut album, Grimen. Earlier in 2015, Gloson's originally self-released Yearwalker EP was reissued by Art of Propaganda to widespead critical acclaim. Although post-metal might be a very millennial creation, with peaks and valleys of creativity across an expansive spectrum, Yearwalker proved that fire still rumbles down below and newcomers can still offer new twists on an oft-tired subgenre. But now, with the release of Grimen, Gloson show that not only was that EP not a fluke, but more so that powerful, poignant art can emerge from humble beginnings and that "post-metal" is merely a springboard for bolder, more daring excursions into the beyond. In the summer of 2012 in Sweden, a group of individuals came together with a solitary goal in mind: to create dark music offset with the smallest glimmer of hope. Thus are the beginnings of Gloson. Instead of being inspired by political or religious themes, the band turned to their own personal and internal wastelands - to see what would manifest from their subconscious, writhing within this very cruel world. The first manifestation was 2014's Yearwalker. Comprising four songs in 32 minutes, Yearwalker was initially released independently by Gloson, but re-released a year later by Catatonic State in their homeland of Sweden and Art of Propaganda for all other countries. The record would garner glowing reviews worldwide, thus setting the stage for Grimen. Gloson's life as a band begins anew with Grimen. Yearwalker already evinced the elan of veterans; Gloson's grasp of sludgy, sometimes-sinister post-metal belied their young years as a band. On Grimen, the extremes subtly suggested with Yearwalker open wider and make for an experience even more dynamic than its not-inconsiderable short-length predecessor. Glosonalready had a penchant for the epic on that EP, and stay the course on Grimen. And yet, that "course" encompasses both darkness and light - and even grey, especially - both earth-moving heaviness and sky-scraping airiness, density and drift. It's a spaciousness that was only hinted at on Yearwalker, and which blooms fully on Gloson's debut album. Within that slo-mo maelstrom, dual vocals wage narrative war, lending yet more dynamics to the band's increasingly finessed sound. This is all given robust, almost-Technicolor clarity courtesy of Cult of Luna's Magnus Lindberg, who mastered Grimen while Gloson's very own Mikael Sällström mixed it. The first ever reissue of "What Is This Thing Called 'Disco'?", a landmark Australian post-punk artefact originally released in 1981 as an LP with accompanying 12" single. One of the first records from the Australian underground to incorporate disco elements into the reigning post-punk asethetic, "What Is This Thing Called 'Disco'?" sits alongside records by international counterparts like Flying Lizards or Yellow Magic Orchestra in its combination of art school formalism and dancefloor hedonism. Melbourne artist Philip Brophy is best known for his work with 70s/80s art-punk provocateurs Tsk Tsk Tsk (pronounced with three clicks of the tongue). Asked to stage an exhibition in Melbourne in 1980, Brophy decided to put disco into an art gallery context. He created 'fake' band Asphixiation to mime on stage along to tape, and recorded "What Is This Thing Called 'Disco'?" as the backing tracks. In 1981, iconic Melbourne label Missing Link released a two song 12", and later that year the band released the album themselves, repressing the 12" and including it in the package. 36 years later, Chapter Music has lovingly remastered and reissued the album + single package, with new liner notes and photos. Art of Propaganda is proud to present Anomalie's highly anticipated third album, Visions. In 2011, Marrok (Harakiri for the Sky, Selbstentleibung) founded Anomalie to combine his favorite elements of emotional black metal, post-metal, and depressive rock, which soon resulted in his own incomparable vision of profound and honest music. Two years later, the work for his first full-length album, Between the Light, came to a conclusion: Anomalie impressed many and received much positive reaction in the press. It was followed in 2015 with the even-more-critically acclaimed Refugium: what was originally nothing more than a one-man side project turned into Marrok's main (and very personal) channel of artistical expression with this second album, which was soon followed by a decision to gather a full live lineup during that year's summer season. Alas, that solo-turned-secular vision has fully blossomed with Anomalie's third album, appropriately titled Visions. Immediately, the expanded heft of a full lineup is felt on Visions. That positive development is largely the result of the band's time on the road, during two European tours alongside such acts as Dread Sovereign and Agrypnie - but it sounds, and especially feels, totally like the Anomalie the international metal scene has grown to love. Thus armed, the band made the wise decision to record again at the esteemed Klangschmiede Studio E in Germany with producer Markus Stock (Alcest, Secrets of the Moon, Empyrium). But more than the actual sonics underpinning Visions are the life experiences which inform Anomalie's music. Some major changes in Marrok's ocurred since the release of Refugium, and with the help of this expanded lineup, he guides those experiences toward a natural evolution of the now-characteristic Anomalie aesthetic. An atmospheric spiritual journey telling the story of seven individual visions, the soundscapes of this opus are an amalgamation of black metal's bleakness with breathtaking melodies and fragile acoustic guitar arrangements, abducting the listener into a realm of fire and bones.
