Black Truffle is thrilled to announce Reverse Tree, the new LP from the acclaimed duo of Eyvind Kang and Jessika Kenney, two musicians who have established themselves as powerful voices working at a unique intersection of contemporary composition, improvisation, and Asian traditional music forms. Either individually or as a pair, they have worked in contexts ranging from performances of traditional Persian and Javanese music to collaborations with Sunn O))), but their work together as a duo (documented on The face of the earth and Aestuarium, both released on Ideological Organ/Editions Mego) most clearly represents the central concerns of their diverse practices: a music of the inner life of sound, demanding ritualistic focus and promising heightened sensations. On Reverse Tree, the duo expand their work together into the realm of the chamber ensemble, presenting two side-long works that feature Kenney’s voice and Kang’s viola alongside a multitude of other instrumentalists. Kang’s Thoughts on Being Exiled to the Frontier, for Lord Wei, inspired by a text by the Tang dynasty poet Hsueh T'ao, features an all-star international ensemble: Kang, Kenney, maverick Israeli conductor Ilan Volkov on violin, Icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir, and guitarists Oren Ambarchi and Stephen O’Malley. The piece is primarily composed of irregular patterns of pizzicato notes and guitar harmonics, gently falling in and out of sync and providing a subtly unstable support for Kenney’s voice, which sings long, wavering tones, at times reminiscent of Michiko Hirayama’s classic performances of Scelsi. Drawing on 20th century instrumental techniques, alternate tuning systems, non-western music and the experience of nature (the irregular rhythms of the piece calling to mind nothing so much as drops of rain), the piece opens a space both serene and subtly uneasy. Kenney’s ‘Elm features Kenney and vocalist Nova Ruth (of Filastine & Twin Sista) alongside an ensemble of strings and Seattle’s Gamelan Pacifica, performing on Javanese instruments tuned to the slendro scale. An uncanny timbre created by bowing the keys of the Gamelan’s instruments, supported by bowed harmonics from the strings, is heard consistently throughout the piece. After a long introductory section in which this harmonic cloud slowly descends from shimmering high notes to rumbling bass, the vocalists enter, singing a slow and stately setting of a 19th century Surakarta poem (attributed to Mangkunegara the IV). The melody is sung as a rich and wavering heterophony, with the ensemble sometimes rising up to support individual notes. The poem deals with the idea of a form of knowledge achieved through deeds, as a practice and state of the heart. This is music in slow motion, in which, in Kenney’s words, ‘scouring the edges of each syllable, each vocalist is kneeling on a sheep hide, searching for the possibilities of what this knowledge might be, shared and private, through layers of history, culture, colonialism, distance, desire’. Electronic musician Adelbert von Deyen’s debut and sophomore album were released just a year apart from each other. “Sternzeit” was followed by “Nordborg”, which featured only one track on each side. Again, von Deyen took his time crafting a meditative maelstrom of ambient sounds. The B-side, “Iceland”, is actually an acoustic interpretation of a snowstorm in Nordborg, Denmark, as remembered by von Deyen. Von Deyens debut album “Sternzeit” had caused quite a stir in 1978 in his home town of Lübeck, where the unconventional young artist found himself inundated with fan mail and booked for autograph sessions. His contract with Sky Records obliged him to deliver a set number of albums to the label— one per year. Enjoying financial independence, he was able to give up his job and focus exclusively on his music. “Nordborg” appeared in 1979 and featured just two tracks, one on each side. It was inspired by a short holiday in Nordborg on the Danish island of Alsen, which coincided with a violent blizzard. “Moonrise”, the A-side title, is a slow motion improvisation on the rising of the moon on Nordborg. Opening with synths evocative of seagull cries, meditative soundscapes mesh together massive lead sounds in unhurried harmony. Winds swirl, synths twist into electronic spheres of sound, drifting without any clear dramatic structure. Immersed in introspection, Adelbert von Deyen celebrates life in the moment. “Iceland”, the B-side piece, depicts the snowstorm. Perfect for Adelbert von Deyen’s artistic expression: sustained organ tones deliver beat frequencies, an electric piano pattern is lost in reverie, winds build through the ARP Odyssey, finally sinking into icy melancholy and detached organ tones. Towards the end we are reconciled by an almost sacral organ part which Adelbert von Deyen brings full circle as he returns to the opening theme. Adelbert von Deyen recorded the second album, like the first, on a Revox A77 tape machine in his little home studio. The instrument list echoes that of “Sternzeit”, with an ARP Odyssey performance synthesizer, a Far fisa VIP 233 organ, a Far fisa String-Orchestra, Hohner Clavinet D6 electric piano, rhythm computer and an electric guitar. Album number three from electronic musician Adelbert von Deyen marks the end of his ambient phase. Whilst “Atmosphere” (1980) largely swathes listeners in familiarly vast expanses of sound, the driving analogue drums of the opening track (von Deyen’s most successful, as it turned out) signal a shift towards Elektro-Kraut terrain. “Atmosphere” showcases Adelbert von Deyen at the peak of his powers. The opening track, “Timemachine”, sees him launch into zestful Electro-Krautrock, aided and abetted by Wolfgang Zabba Lindner on drums. Lindner had already popped up in the early 1970s in a prog-rock combo by the name of Tomorrow’s Gift and recorded an interesting experimental percussion album in 1974 with Carsten Bohn (“Vollbedienung of Percussion”). He can also be heard on the second piece “Silverrain” (in rather less zestful mode). A further eight tracks follow, revolving around the theme of “Atmosphere”. Layers of synths glide slowly by, accompanied by drones which resound for minutes on end. Beats and synth FX add to the air of contemplation. A huge amount of time and money went into the production of this album. Adelbert von Deyen composed tirelessly in his home studio, experimenting with his synthesizers and searching for new sounds. Lars Hidde added the final touches, taking care of the mix and mastering at Star Studio, Hamburg. All, in all, it was worth the effort. Atmosphere proved to be Adelbert von Deyen’s most successful album. In his biography he writes: “Reactions to this opus were extreme, but absolutely positive, especially in other countries. ‘Time machine’ appeared on quite a few LP and CD compilations and became an instrumental hit, the single selling around fifty thousand copies!” If Adelbert von Deyen’s first two albums saw him strive for artistic and financial independence, “Atmosphere” marked the beginning of a metamorphosis. We are still in the sphere of ambient electronica, but the first two tracks are indicative of a clear shift towards Krautrock or electronic rock. Von Deyen's next album would head off in a different direction altogether. The soft rock ballads and socially critical lyrics of “Eclipse” came as a complete surprise. The Candy Bomber sessions were spearheaded by Paul Lemp, co-owner of the studio of the same name, theater, film and dance composer, and impassioned bass player. The sessions were his dream project of free-spirited experimentation into which he injected his boundless energy, teaming up with Thomas Wydler (drummer and longest serving member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds) and studio partner Ingo Krauss (Conny Plank's studio engineer between 1987 and 2001) to form a core triumvirate, that spiralled outwards to bring in a who's who of talented friends and studio visitors. In this volume these include Kid Congo Powers, Swiss jazz pianist Stefan Rusconi, Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten/Automat), Gemma Ray, Toby Dammit (Iggy Pop/Nick Cave), André Vida, Toni Kater, Charly Birkenhauer, Paul Kuchenbuch and Matthew Styles. Built during the Nazi era, the building which houses Candy Bomber was once the largest in the world. (a Julian Montague impression of the facade of the building adorns the album cover). In 1948/49 it served as the hub for the Berlin airlift, when the allied forces flew over 200,000 flights supplying the Western part of the city with daily necessities. The airlift also provided the name for the studio, which set up shop in rooms that previously hosted a computing centre for the CIA. The studio is now legendary in Berlin, not least for its enviable collection of vintage valve gear. With this at their disposal, Lemp, Krauss and Wydler established an environment for sessions that were organic, pressure-free and, more or less, agenda-less. The end result is sonic art unimpeded - a wild cocktail of originality, intensity, beauty, sincerity, and stunning freeform musicianship - underscored by a Dada-ist playfulness and motivating force. This is not a work of chin-stroking abstraction however - here you'll find some of the coolest jams, ones that will peel your face off. Tragically, Paul Lemp died prematurely and unexpectedly in summer 2015, before the Candy Bomber sessions were finished. Bakery then headed to Black Rock, NV, to play two sets at “Burning Man”, invited by the founders of this very eclectic festival. True to their nature the band performed two “surre- al” sets, the first one in the middle of a sandstorm. Upon returning to Berlin, Noah, Temple and Anton began to piece together the tracks which eventually became their debut album“Lucy’ Around that time the band met Alex & Digby Smith, 2 young brothers recently moved to Berlin from Guilford after running Steve Lillywhite’s studio in the UK for several years. The raw sounds of Bakery were out in that oven of sound treatment and baked to a delicious crispness. In 2016, the band has started to unveil the tracks from Lucy one at a time, serving out special sur- prises with each one to jolt the mind and please the senses.
