LP - White Vinyl with Download. English-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter Karen Elson releases her second album Double Roses via 1965 Records. Double Roses was recorded in Los Angeles, at the world-renowned United Studios (neé Ocean Way) in Hollywood, with producer Jonathan Wilson (Jackson Browne, Father John Misty, Conor Oberst). Elson, who had been writing and demoing songs throughout her recording hiatus of the past few years, spent three weeks in Los Angeles working with Wilson to put the album together. A long time fan of the sun soaked sounds of the ‘Laurel Canyon’ era, it was the perfect place to commit her songs to tape. The album features collaborations with an array of musical talent, including The Black Keys’ Pat Carney, Father John Misty, Laura Marling, Benmont Tench, Pat Sansone (Wilco), Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) and Dhani Harrison. The title Double Roses is taken from a Sam Shepard poem that appears in his journal collection Motel Chronicles. Emotionally struck by the poem, and its reference to England, Elson incorporated the verse as spoken word into the title track and sought Shephard’s permission to do so - sending a letter to him via her friend and bandmate Jackson Smith’s mother, the poet / musician Patti Smith.

The Belgian duo JOY WELLBOY, composed by Joy Adegoke and Wim Janssens, released the first sample of their upcoming album – with the same title meaning in English “Feet on shit, head in the stars – the first, only in French. Partners not only in art but also in their real life, Joy and Wim, first met in 2009, in Brussels. Since then, the couple started to record music videos, until the release of their first LP “Yorokobi’s Mantra” in 2013, which contained some dark-electronic-pop songs like “Before The Sunrise” or “Lay Down Your Blade.” Joy Wellboy moved from Brussels to Berlin – thanks to Ellen Allen from Bpitch control – and started to discover the city, getting inspired, and this was what came behind their second album, released in 2015, “Wedding” – titled by the Berlin neighborhood where they were living at the time – a more concise and heartfelt album. The best representation been their single “I’m Waiting For You.” Now, Joy Wellboy is ready to come back, with their first full album in French (they have previously sang one song in “Wedding” – “Comme sur des roulletes”). The three men of the band Hathors have a new album with Panem Et Circenses. The good work will be released on the 7th of April, 7th and I have the honor to explain how it sounds so. So what the three Swiss guys have packed on their record is here: First, the dry theory. Hathors have eleven songs with a play time of 46 minutes. The singing watching you do the start. This starts very smooth, catchy and groovy. Particularly striking is the singing in the verses, because this reminds me somehow of Ozzy Osbourne. Watching You increases in pressure and holds up the tension, which is mainly due to the great song structure, which is broken towards the middle of the song and shows the hard, roky side of the band. Afterwards, the song continues with a slight indiesound in the song Pyramid. The title song Panem Et Circenses has, from the first second on, a melancholic basic mood and considers it also for good 2/3 of the song before he gets a twist in the direction of grunge by distorted guitars, a powerful drums and a screaming song. The song reaches a high point where you have to headbang inevitably. The three Swiss from Hathors have squeezed a veritable treat on an album. The songs are a wonderful mix of Rock, Grunge, Indie and Pope elements. The emotionality, the power and the melancholy in the songs stand out particularly. Please listen to this album, everyone

LP format includes digital download code. When Happyness first burst into the public conscience with 2013’s debut single It’s On You, their spirited take on US college rock was as big a surprise as it was an instant hit. The resulting full length, Weird Little Birthday, went on to feature in many of 2014’s End of Year album lists. Worldwide tours, an NME Award, a re-issue on the much-loved labels Moshi Moshi Recordings (Bar/None in US), and millions of Spotify plays later, it is with some anticipation now that the band finally reveal the full details of the follow-up. Titled Write In, released through Moshi Moshi Recordings (Bar/None in US) and featuring artwork from the band’s own Jon EE Allan, the record was made in the band’s own studio above a now-abandoned bookshop, then finished and mixed with Adam Lasus at his LA home studio. Write In sets its stall out as an outward looking, inventive, and thoughtful progression from their debut. Drawing on an array of influences including Roxy Music, The Beach Boys, Randy Newman, Sonic Youth, Big Star and Pierre Cavalli, the direction is best summed up by Jon EE Allan;
“I’d like to think this record looks outside the little American alt-rock sphere we were looking in on. I think we used to be very afraid of being earnest. And now we’re able to be tender or heartfelt without feeling too guilty about it. This record cost us about £500 to make, and that was mainly spent on an 8 track tape recorder and a dehumidifier. We self-produced it in our studio [the affectionately named 'Jelly Boy Studios', where the band also recorded their debut, Weird Little Birthday]. The building's being redeveloped at the end of the year, so this is the last record we'll make there, which feels like the end of a chapter for us.

Pearce realised that you didn’t need to layer 16 guitar tracks in an expensive studio to make a big noise. Recording directly on to a four-track resulted in a thick, distorted, abrasive sound that suited his needs perfectly.

With their album "Do Not Tailgate" released in 1995, the Swedish rock band Fireside celebrated its international breakthrough. They cleared the Swedish Grammy for the best rock album and got a contract with Rick Rubins American Recordings. There followed performances in the States. In 1997, Fireside finally released their third long-range player: "Uomini d'onore". A technically mature, multi-layered and experimental work, which immediately got a place in the top ten. Today, "Uomini d'onore" is a European Emocore classic. At the time, the album made the breeding ground for the Swedish rock wave in its independent mix of Fugazi, Quicksand, Texas Is The Reason and Far. Whether by virtue of his lyrics, which routinely defy the presumed polarities of wit and empathy;
his live performances which may perhaps be described best as “intimately berzerk”, or the infuriating line he seems to occupy between canny and total fraud online or in interviews, Father John Misty has cultivated a rare space for himself in the musical landscape - that of a real enigma. Pure Comedy sees Tillman at the height of these powers: as a lyricist, and equally so a cultural observer - at times bordering on freakishly prescient. Tillman’s bent critiques, bared humanity and gently warped classic songwriting are all here in equal measure and - at 75 minutes - there’s a veritable fuck ton of it. Tillman wrote the majority of Pure Comedy throughout 2015 and recorded all the basic tracking and vocals live to tape (in no more than two takes each) at United Studios (fka the legendary Ocean Way Studios, favored by Frank Sinatra and The Beach Boys) in Los Angeles March 2016. Pure Comedy was co-produced once again by Josh Tillman and long-time producer Jonathan Wilson;
mixed by Tillman, Wilson and Trevor Spencer, and mastered by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios. The album features string, horn and choral arrangements from classical iconoclast Gavin Bryars (Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet, Sinking Of The Titanic), with additional contributions from Nico Muhly and Thomas Bartlet.

It was the follow-up to the very successful Pornograffitti album. III Sides To Every Story was the last album with the band's original line-up: Gary Cherone, Nuno Bettencourt, Pat Badger and Paul Geary. The album is structured as a concept album in three sections labeled as "sides" - a play on the notion of "different sides to a story" and that of "sides" of a vinyl album. The sides, mentioned in the song "Cupid's Dead" as "three sides to every story" are named "Yours", "Mine" and "The Truth", and each features a distinct musical style and lyrical imagery. Most of III Sides To Every Story was recorded at New River Studios, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and the orchestral parts were recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London. The single Rest in Peace" reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of this classic album, 1000 copies are pressed on Moss Green vinyl. Way back in the mid-1990s, Cali artists Exile and Aloe Blacc formed a group called Emanon. Exile became one of the hottest producers in the underground hip-hop world (making Below The Heavens with Blu in the process) and started his Dirty Science label in mid-2000s, and Aloe Blacc released Shine Through and Good Things, then turned into a worldwide star with “Wake Me Up” and “The Man.” But Aloe and Exile are back now as Emanon once again with Dystopia. The 10 songs have features from Blu and CashUs King (formerly known as Co$$). The band was originally called The Electric Elves, but was shortened to The Elves and finally Elf in 1972. Elf disbanded in 1975 after recording three albums and after most of the lineup had been absorbed into Ritchie Blackmore's new group, Rainbow. Ronnie James Dio went on to a successful career in heavy metal, fronting Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven &
Hell, and his own band, Dio. David Feinstein also found a career in metal, leading the band The Rods for a number of years. Original keyboardist Doug Thaler went on to a career in music management. Recorded while the band was evolving slowly into the Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Trying to Burn the Sun is the third and final release from Elf, the band that finally earned Ronnie James Dio the attention he had been seeking since the late 50s. After writing and recording a few singles for Blackmore, Dio and Elf were solidly moving in a heavier musical direction. Trying to Burn the Sun is a great listen for all fans of 70s rock, not only Dio and Rainbow fans.
