Ray Smith's importance to the legacy of the label is that his first Sun session in January 1958 heralded the new era of rock 'n' roll. A year after a series of outstanding concert performances in the UK and Holland during 1978, Ray Smith died tragically as a result of a shooting accident on 29 November 1979. 'Shake Around' Includes 'So Young', ockin' Bandit' and [1]reak Up', which he recorded several months before labelmate and friend Jerry Lee Lewis' made it a hit single. 'Shake Around' will be released having been newly remastered from the original tapes and pressed on audiophile-quality 10-inch vinyl. 1975 LIVE BROADCAST FROM CLEVELAND, OHIO BY THE CLASSIC RUSH LINE -UP Shortly after the release of Rush s debut album in 1974, original drummer John Rutsey was forced to leave the band due to health difficulties stemming from diabetes and his general distaste for touring. His last performance with the group was on July 25th, 1974 at Centennial Hall in London, Ontario. Rush held auditions for a new drummer and eventually selected Neil Peart as Rutsey's replacement. Peart officially joined the band on July 29th, 1974, two weeks before the group's first U.S. tour. They performed their first concert together, opening for Uriah Heep and Manfred Mann with an attendance of over 11,000 people at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 14th. In addition to becoming the band's drummer, Peart assumed the role of principal lyricist from Geddy Lee, who had lost interest in writing, despite having penned the words for the band's debut. Instead, Lee, along with Alex Lifeson, now focused primarily on the instrumental aspects of Rush. Their sophomore album, Fly by Night (1975), saw the inclusion of the band's first epic mini-opera, By-Tor and the Snow Dog , replete with complex arrangements and multi-section format. Lyrical themes also underwent dramatic changes after the addition of Peart, because of his love for fantasy and science-fiction literature. Despite these many differences however, much of the newer material still closely mirrored the blues style found on Rush's debut. Having spent almost the entirety of 1974 touring their first album across Canada and the USA, in February 1975 they were back out on the road promoting Fly By Night. Starting the tour again in their native country at Waterloo, Ontario s Wilfrid Laurier University Theatre Auditorium on February 14th, within a week they had crossed the border and were performing at the Indianapolis Convention Centre supporting the Faces. On April 7th 75 the band pulled up at The Agora Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio a venue they had played a year before on their first US tour, and which, like tonight s show, had also been the subject of an FM radio broadcast (available as the ABC 1974 CD). The set list differs quite substantially from the 1974 gig however and this was their first US gig at which they were the headline act. Playing five cuts from FBN, four from their debut and keeping their favourite cover of the time - Larry Williams Bad Boy - in the set, this dynamic performance featuring superb audio sound quality finds Rush at a still early but most ambitious time in the group s history when it must have seemed, for band and fans alike, that just about anything was possible. The Perishers were a Swedish indie rock band. The band formed in 1997 with six members. The lineup since 2001, has consisted of Ola Klüft (vocals, guitar), Martin Gustafson (keyboards, backing vocals), Pehr Aström (bass), and Thomas Hedlund (drums). In 2005, the band was personally handpicked by Sarah McLachlan to open her second leg of the Afterglow tour. Each night of the tour, Sarah McLachlan joined the band and sang background vocals on their song 'Pills'. The live track was released as a promotional CD single and as an online exclusive EP via Tower Records later that year. Additionally, several of their songs have been played in episodes of the American television programs The O.C., One Tree Hill, Greek and Veronica Mars. in Veronica Mars, the ballad "Sway" featured prominently in a climactic episode of the series' second season. Sarah Isaksson (Klüft's former vocal teacher) is a featured artist on their song "Pills." Their song 'My Heart' has been played on Saturn Sedan commercials as well as a second-season episode of the ABC Family series Kyle XY. Another song, 'Trouble Sleeping', was played in a promotional spot for Grey's Anatomy; the song 'Come Out of the Shade' was featured in an episode of the show. 180g! How can you describe a musical quantum leap? Maybe it’s best to explain it in numbers. Flügge [meaning “independent” or “to spread one’s wings” in German] is 44 minutes and 41 seconds long, includes 14 songs and 13 instruments divided by two musicians drawing on at least ten different musical spheres of influence. Sampling and digital post production: zero. The second album by Berlin duo Odd Couple has become an eclectic mix that doesn’t fit too easily into a category. When Tammo Dehn and Jascha Kreft were working on their debut “It's A Pressure To Meet You”, which was released two years ago, they were still at the primordial soup stage of sultry garage-rock. Flügge outgrew the age-old framework of guitar, bass and drums with a confident vehemence. The record breathes rock music, speaking the language of the Blues with riffs in widescreen and keyboards under cover of night, but nevertheless structured by the skeleton of a modern interpretation of Krautrock and the repetitive punching beat of classic hip-hop productions. The result is a sound that the German music scene has not yet heard. Flügge consistently directs its gaze inwards. Six years after their arrival in Berlin – a circus of coolness, drugs and trendy hang outs – the two kindergarten buddies from Ostfriesland still feel somewhat out of place. So, what should they do? Another satirical outcry, like their debut? No, instead they had a rummage around in their own “Gehirnkasten” (“brain boxes”), to name one of the songs on Flügge. “We made a conscious decision to be introspective,” explains Dehn. “On one hand, we can’t exclude ourselves from the criticism, but on the other hand something had developed in us over the years that we just had to get out”. Initially this included the typical ingredients of pop: love, pain, anxiety, overwork and instability. But the duo managed to do this without losing sight of their humorous, albeit caustic, take on their own contradictions – and, consequently, those of a whole generation. “Our age group is living out the self-discovery only dreamed about by our parents which, ironically, has been made possible by a lifestyle that people reject today – a normal job and a savings account” says Dehn. “We wanted to examine this position.” This is particularly evident in the title song “Flügge” in which Odd Couple describe a trip to California – “Es war schön, Mami!”(“It was really good, Mommy!”) – which led to their supposed enlightenment about life: “Ich glaub’, ich hab’s verstanden” (“I think I understood it”). The problem is that it takes more than just going on a journey by yourself or joining a yoga class for beginners to formulate a theory of everything. It is more a case of life throwing you a never-ending cycle of challenges that constantly change and in the end most people are none the wiser for it. Why is that? “Let's go online so you can choose out of it,” suggest Odd Couple on the album’s moody highlight “Très Mello”, declaring, “Too many options make me feel like I'm lost.” We want to have our cake and eat it too. City and tranquillity. Nature and infrastructure. Forest and electricity. Preferably with Wi-Fi. The fact that this social criticism works so well musically is based on the band’s own self-observations. “Flügge feels like our first real album,” says Kreft. “This is us, here and now.” It’s easy to see why. Before its release in 2014, their self-produced debut album was left to stew for exactly two years and three months on their home computer’s hard drive. For “Flügge” however, it was the other way around. The album was recorded in full within just a few weeks, mixed by Dehn himself and mastered by Kai Blankenberg. “It was refreshing,” says Dehn. “Some songs only materialized once we’d started the sessions.” This meant that technical crutches were largely prohibited. Despite its sonic diversity, all of Flügge was performed; nothing was sampled. “We wanted to take on the challenge of producing a modern sound using analog resources” the duo explained, “Basically, we want to be anything but a retro band.” With Flügge, Odd Couple have certainly made the grade. Although the record helps itself to parts from the rock warehouse, it doesn’t simply rebuild what has gone before. Songs like “Orbit Traveller” or “Serve” are daydreams in song format, “Am I Evil” features riffs and distortion pedal in just the right places and “Go Sees” with its falsetto chorus is a little masterpiece. References or comparisons would be out of place at this point. Flügge stands on its own. Odd Couple belong to a time when rock music is almost desperately seeking its own identity – a positive anachronism. Their version of rock can sure tell us a thing or two... and it’s fun! Murnau's unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nosferatu (1922), is an Expressionist masterpiece of the silent era. Much of the original score by Hans Erdmann (meant to be played live by an orchestra) was lost, leading Nosferatu to inspire several subsequent soundtracks, the best known of which is by Hammer Horror composer James Bernard, written for the Tanis Film video reissue of the film in 1997. Colin Newman's 3 classic early 80's solo albums "A-Z", "provisionally entitled the singing fish" and "Not To" originally released on Beggars Banquet / 4AD re-released on his own new imprint Sentient Sonics. Unavailable for many years - the remastered original albums come on single vinyls. These albums were recorded and released between 1980 & 1982 in a "post 154" rush of activity. While all the albums bear the name Colin Newman they differ in that "A-Z" and "Not To" were recorded as "band" albums with Colin being joined by WIRE's Robert Grey, Mike Thorne (who also produced, as he had the first 3 Wire albums) and Desmond Simmons on "A-Z" and Robert, Desmond & Simon Gillham on "Not To". "provisionally entitled the singing fish" was more an "actual" solo album in that everything was played by himself. Colin produced the latter 2 albums with Steve Parker engineering.
