Prog Temple present a vinyl reissue of Midwinter's The Waters of Sweet Sorrow, originally released in 1993. Midwinter's now legendary status in the field of acid-folk had only been established when their 1973 demo recordings were unveiled to a wider audience 20 years after their conception. Until then, Midwinter had existed only in local knowledge and in the shadows of Stone Angel, the post-Midwinter outfit whose privately-pressed self-titled album from 1975 (PT 8026CD) has since commanded deserved attention by fans and collectors alike. Remain Calm is the debut album from Mica Levi and Oliver Coates. Born out of an impromptu NTS show from October 2014 where the duo mixed fragments of Oliver's classical compositions with Mica's electronic melodies to produce an album that blurs the lines of modern composition, grime, techno and drone. Bringing together thirteen tracks that have been chopped and screwed to produce a crossbreed of their collective tastes, before being passed to long time allies Slip to release. From Oliver's training as a classical cellist and his work as part of the London Contemporary Orchestra. To Mica's work as part of the Rough Trade group Micachu and The Shapes, and of course the breathtaking Under The Skin soundtrack. Evolving out of the NTS session, the sounds on Remain Calm have drifted far from the original broadcast, but the DNA is one of DIY through and through. Snatches of Oliver's cello ring through the album's core with an inquisitive curiosity that is transcribed into raw, analogue sculptures of visionary soundtrack of contemporary urban life. From the bleary-eyed up-early Saturday morning awakening of Barok Main, to the late night sorrowful slump of snatched voices that carries I'll Keep Going in a forward motion. The soundtrack work of both Mica and Oliver really comes to the surface on Dolphins Climb Onto Shore For The First Time, while Dragon In The Mist and Say Goodbye To Everyone show their tastes for early 2000's grime and garage, as explored on Mica's releases for Demdike Stare and Oliver's recent Upstepping LP released by PRAH recordings. Remain Calm pulls in influence from the best work of artists such as Broadcast, The Black Dog, Arthur Russell, Suzanne Ciani, Andy Stott and Autechre to produce an album that in a world where everyone is going deeper into abstract electronics, the live instrumentation on show here means it will rise high above the rest, and is sure to be marked as a jewel in each artist's discography for years to come. Martha Wainwright releases a wonderful new studio album, 'Goodnight City' November 11th on PIAS. It's the follow-up to her acclaimed 2012 release 'Come Home To Mama'. 'Goodnight City' features 12 brand new songs produced by Thomas Bartlett (Surfjan Stevens, Glen Hansard) and long time producer Brad Albetta. It recalls the emotional rawness of her debut album, much of it encapsulated by the captivating lead track 'Around The Bend' and her extraordinary voice. "Making 'Goodnight City' was the most fun I've had in a long time," Martha admits. "Thomas (keys), Brad (electric/bass), Phil Melanson (drums) and I would sit in a circle and work out arrangements for these vividly different songs. Recording them live with very few overdubs the focus remains on the integrity of the song and our ability to play together as a band." Martha wrote half the songs on the album while the other half were written by friends and relatives: Beth Orton, Glen Hansard, Rufus, Wainwright, Michael Ondaatje and Merrill Garbus of tune-yArDs. "Because these writers know me and because I was able to personalise these songs by changing things here and there, I made them feel as if I wrote them myself," Martha explains. "Somehow they wonderfully reflect my life and I am so thankful to the other artists for writing them." 'Goodnight City' was recorded in Montreal. 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL GATEFOLD SLEEVE Man is a Welsh rock band whose style are a mixture of West Coast psychedelic rock, progressive rock, guitar driven hard rock, blues and pub rock. Formed in 1968 as a reincarnation of Welsh rock harmony group The Bystanders, Man are renowned for the extended jams in their live performances. Man was initially signed to Pye Records for whom they recorded their first two albums: Revelation; noted for the simulated orgasm on "Erotica", which received a UK ban, and 2 Ozs Of Plastic (With A Hole In The Middle). 2 Ozs Of Plastic (With A Hole In The Middle) captured something of the group's live fire and their concert performances often followed pretty much along the lines of the track listing. While their first album had a strong British feel, the follow up was nicely spiced with touches reminiscent of several American west coast bands such as Quicksilver Messenger Service and Frank Zappa's Mothers Of Invention. The album cover was intended to be impossible to look at. An optically unstable geometric pattern was chosen and a clashing contrast of colours applied. The band each had their faces painted a different unnatural colour and the resulting photographs were distributed around the pattern. Lettering was outlined in 'Yellow Submarine' rainbows. One might assume that Macabre Omen is the least productive black metal project in all the Greek scene, but I'd like to think that its progenitors are simply those who like to choose their battles with great care, and this partially explains the consistent quality of their sole full length in 17 years: The Ancient Returns. The band started out with a pair of demos in the mid-90s, and then went on to participate on a fair number of split recordings with artists from other countries, but this is the one official long form recording the band have yet produced, and even then it's but 5 tracks and 38 minutes of content. Fortunate, then, that the writing is this good, because The Ancient Returns shines like a grim, glimmering crown among the viscera of so many underwhelming Hellenic acts of the 21st century. Don't be fooled by Macabre Omen's scarce throughput, because the constituents here have a great deal of experience in other bands, a number of them big figures on the Italian scene. Claudio Alcara has played with Frostmoon Eclipse and Handful of Hate, while drummer Gionata Potenti has stamped his beats on albums by dozens of bands (Glorior Belli, Kult, 11 as In Adversaries, Ad Hominem, Hiems and Melencolia Estatica are a mere handful). The Greek member, Alexandros, who performs guitars, bass and vocals, has also played in The One, Australian supergroup Razor of Occam and the UK's black/death/thrashers Scythian. So it stands to reason that there is an enormous amount of talent involved on this recording, and that they enforce that with strong atmospheres and memorable compositions is but an extra smattering of blood on their blades. As the barbaric, manly figure shadowing the band's logo on the cover might imply, they manifest a certain level of epic 'barbarity' in their material, almost as if Nocternity and Immortal had birthed a Hyborian warchild. The album is enormously well-paced, the band wisely choosing to eschew the standard blasting monotony for passages of spacious, open grandeur, like standing in some mass field of the dead, the ring of their clashing steel long having faded into the cries of blackbirds. "In Memory..." is pretty much all crisp melodies flown over the fallen standards of war, with a curious mix of deep, somnolent background narration and tortured rasping redolent of Burzum or Nocternity. The music itself creates an almost Manowar feeling integrated with slower-paced Immortal or even a touch of Rotting Christ's driving, melodic glamor. Another creeper is the 12 minute finale "Hellas - Ode A/Ode B", with incessant, brazen guitars over solid beats that intensity into molten double bass sequences. Macabre Omen can also blast away relentlessly when desired, as evidenced in "A Call from Gods to God" or "The Perfect Sound of North vs. South", but they never choose to forsake the variation that lies at the heart of a good song. Speaking of good songs, "An Ode to Rhode" is perhaps my favorite here, with lovely acoustic guitars that morph into surges of majestic force, then back again, while the riffing landscape continues to deliver one memorial, memorable guitar line after the next. The lyrics are rather sparse on the album, and certainly such compositions could have benefited from more meat for the mind, but their simplicity is a stunning trait in its own right, and the massive, airy pain felt in Alexandros' tone does somewhat compensate. Production-wise, The Ancient Returns is both broad and searing, not polished off enough to turn away the rawheads, but also clean enough in its delivery that some obvious effort was placed in maintain the material's resonance. The drums offer an appreciable charging undertow, the bass ever present and distinguished, and the axes felling neck and limb, blade and shield as they pitch through spikes of tremolo bliss and rushes of chord-initiated atmosphere. There are few flaws at all here, but if one could be noted, it's just that Macabre Omen never quite carves out a category of their to explore. All of the strengths in their writing fall under a mightier precedent, so I could never rate this at quite the level of its influences formative works of wonder. But in an era where many of the fresh Greek faces were simply mirroring their clear Scandinavian forebears, The Ancient Returns still brings a lot to the table, if only because of its seamless execution and brooding immersion. A tribute to the fallen warriors of many Hellenic confrontations that feels authentic and easy to take seriously. A damn good effort that falls only marginally short of greatness. Downloadcode. Moreno, Kassin and Domenico were childhood friends from school. They formed a band and made three albums, each one under a different one's name. Their records are different and very influential in Brazil. Morneo is the son of legendary Brazilian musician Caetano Veloso. You can hear him at age 8 on the first Luaka Bop release ( Beleza Tropical') singing the words Ilê Ayê' on Caetano's song of the same name. Moreno's record is to some extent the most conventional of the three, even though Domenico, the drummer, plays drums on a sampler and cymbal sounds using sand paper. The next release, Domenico's, had the greatest success in the indie world, while Kassin's album is the most produced (which makes sense as he has become one of the most successful producers in Brazil). The D.O.C., short for Department of Correction, is a highly skilled battle rhymer from Dallas, USA. In addition to his solo career he was a member of the hip hop group Fila Fresh Crew and later collaborated with gangsta rap group N.W.A where he co-wrote many of their releases. After Fila Fresh Crew split up in 1988, The D.O.C. went on to pursue a successful solo career. No One Can Do It Better is the debut album by The D.O.C. from 1989 and is produced by the then upcoming Dr. Dre who contributed on most of the fast hard hitting rap tracks with his heavy funk laden beats. The album reached number one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for two weeks and spawned two number one hits on the Hot Rap Songs chart: "It's Funky Enough" and "The D.O.C. & The Doctor". The album went platinum five years after its release. Tragically The D.O.C. severed his vocal chords in an almost fatal car accident in November 1989 but No One Can Do It Better still stands the test of time as one of the early pre- Chronic albums.
