USURPRESS should be no strangers to those of you who've been faithfully supporting DOOMENTIA since the Swedish D-beat/crust masters - still featuring former members of UNCURBED and DELLAMORTE, including Daniel Ekeroth on bass - have already put out two seven inches on the label, one being a split with the equally spankin' BOMBS OF HADES. But whatever you think you know can now be flushed in the toilets as this new recording - released on CD by Poland's SELFMADEGOD and LP by, well, guess who?! - sees them exploring quite new and surprising territories. The fact alone that they've come up with their first ever epic so to speak (the 7+ minutes "A Tidal Wave of Fire") is an indication but still doesn't cover it all as on those three new tracks, USURPRESS have decided to push further the confined walls of crust in order to see what laid behind. Dipping as much into old-school death-metal as in suffocating doom and Satan-knows-what, this set recorded in March 2013 is pretty much unlike anything they've done before and is certain to raise eyebrows. If there's one thing that is certain to attract the attention with BENT SEA, it's its 'deluxe' line-up. Essentially former SCARVE and well-respected SOILWORK drummer Dirk Verbeuren, who never did hide his love of grind and death and even lend his talent to such unrefined noisemongers as SUBLIME CADAVERIC DECOMPOSITION among others, little plaything, on this recording the man is completed by not only ABORTED's Sven de Caluwé on vocals but also the god of grind himself, Sir Shane Embury (whoever says 'who?!' will get punched in the face repeatedly) on bass. Needless to say that those eight tracks will take the listeners back to the glorious days of early EARACHE classics like TERRORIZER or EXTREME NOISE TERROR, yet with a modern edge that doesn't undermine even for a second its relentless nature. This is where the old school meets the new school. And this ain't pretty. Grind on baby

Sammal relies on live playing in the studio, which brings the listener closer to the band: the production breathes so carefree that you can almost touch the notes floating in the air. No 2 is not a companion piece to the debut, nor is it a preview of the second full-length, which will be released via Svart Records next winter. It is a mini-album, which stands on its own. Sammal wanted to clear their closet from older gems, and prepare for a new era with this release. Three of the five songs featured on the EP are old demo songs, which were re-recorded at the same session with a new track "Vankina varisten" and a cover of Aphrodite's Child's "Magic Mirror," translated as "Peilin taikaa," in the summer of 2013. Sammal was founded in 2004 by guitarist Jura Salmi and vocalist Jan- Erik Kiviniemi. Sammal's eponymous debut was voted as the 9th best Finnish album of 2013 by the critics of Rumba, a renowned Finnish rock and pop magazine. First released on Opal Tapes, Patricia's [1]ody Issues' seemed a natural pick for reissue and wax upgrade with the inauguration of Black Opal. It's 6 tracks swing with a dark energy that showcases the rhapsodic gravitational pull of house music in even the most blackened and cloudy specimens. Gossamer sheets and bleeding pads of degenerating ambience coalesce with fine white noise and quilted kicks to bless-it-out and ultimately engulf the body inwards in ferrous dreams. Repetition turns to hypnosis, and as Waiting For Alexis staggers and flanges on it's path like one of Villalobos' weird K tracks, and Melting and Josephine drip acid through the haze daze, material reality becomes that bit more viscid. Origamibiro is a collaborative project consisting of three core members: musician, soundtrack composer and producer Tom Hill, visual artist and filmmaker The Joy Of Box, and multi-instrumentalist Andy Tytherleigh. Originally started as a solo project for Tom, Origamibiro has since evolved into an audio-visual collective, producing studio music, art objects, interactive installations and hauntingly original live audio-visual performances. Origamibiro like to create work with an array of unorthodox processes and contraptions, found objects, video feeds and multi instrumentalism. Their unique live performances involve treated books, typewriters, found celluloid, paper, eerie wildlife recordings, home movies, sellotape and bespoke visual contraptions. All of these things had been added, adapted, even destroyed as a way to generate images and audio that could evoke a feeling, a response, an understanding or perhaps a question from audiences. 2014 sees the re-release of Origamibiro's entire back catalogue - the albums "Cracked Mirrors and Stopped Clocks", "Shakkei" and "Shakkei Remixed" - through Denovali and also the release of their fourth studio album 'Odham's Standard'. Discussions concerning tone and theme took place much earlier in the writing process this time around and unbeknown to each other, both Tom and Jim were taking an interest in more supernatural aspects of audio and video material generation. Jim had begun to research into spirit photography, where images of deceased spirits are apparently imprinted onto photographic plates through the presence of a medium. Looking for an audio equivalent, Tom began looking into EVP or electronic voice phenomenon whereby hidden voices from deceased spirits appear to present themselves in audio recordings. What is fascinating about this process is not how legitimate the phenomenon actually is but how dependant it is on the decision or need of the viewer or listener to believe it is significant or even personal. Interestingly, there have been many attempts over the years to debunk or disprove the validity of spirit photography and yet for every court case there are also a number of witnesses willing to passionately testify that not only is the phenomenon real but that it applied directly to them. Arthur Conan Doyle was the creator of the most famous detective in the world and, conversely, a staunch defendant of the validity of spirit photography. In his infamous treatise 'The Case For Spirit Photography' he is both naive and strangely prescient: "Victorian science would have left the world hard and clean and bare, like a landscape in the moon. (however) There is nothing scientifically impossible, so far as I can see, in some people seeing things that are invisible to others. One or two consequences are obvious, the experiences of children will be taken more seriously. Cameras will be forthcoming. These folk who appear to be our neighbours, with only some small difference of vibration to separate us, will become familiar." For fans of intelligent multi-instrumental ambient electronica with an organic feel - Julia Kent, Múm, Fred Frith's compositions for dance, Max Richter's "Blue Notebooks" and the works of CM von Hausswolff can be considered as references

Mordicus were hungry and set out to make the sort of extraordinary gurgling and mind-piercing noises that would separate them from our comrades in crime to the west. Mordicus cleverly and skillfully fused elements from both Finnish dark, wrist-cutting, eerie-tinged and sorrowful Death Metal and the Swedish type of murky, utterly down-tuned and heavy Död Metall (ála Therion, Dismember, Unleashed, etc.) on Dances from Left without compromising the raging Death Metal bombardment of all things vicious and neck-snapping. LUSHES are a band born of tensions - between art and math, order and chaos, planning and chance. You can hear it in their songs - taut, twitching art-punk that balance anxiety and elation, often within the space of a few bars. Album opener "Harsh" glides along slowly, feeling like a moody and measured art-rock meditation until you zero in on the words in the chorus: "Harsh on my ears, that's the way I like it." This is push-pull music, songs that temper the jagged fitfulness of groups like June of 44 and Slint with the soft-focus sweetness and open-ended song structures of The Sea & Cake and The Notwist. That moods so diametrically opposed can peacefully coexist is part of LUSHES mystery and allure. That duality extends to the group's background. and musical backgrounds were different: James grew up on bands like Nirvana, Wu-Tang Clan and Fugazi. Joel was formally trained, loving classical music but almost completely oblivious to rock and pop. The fusion of their disparate influences is what animates LUSHES - the anarchy of punk and hardcore colliding with the precision of classical to create music that is marvelously ordered while still feeling seconds away from detonation. Gatefold vinyl album limited to 500 copies. Swedish band KAMCHATKA was formed back in 2005. "The Search Goes On" is their 5th album and Per Wiberg (OPETH, CANDLEMASS, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS) joining their ranks on bass and vocals. KAMCHATKA have been influenced by several genres including blues, progressive rock, stoner rock and jazz and by artists such as Devo, Ali Farka Touré, Cactus, King Crimson, Kyuss, Sarah Vaughan and Chet Baker. Thomas Andersson's guitar playing is mainly riff based and is considered highly inspired by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower, therefore KAMCHATKA are often compared to heavy blues-rock bands active in the late 1960s and early 1970s like The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin and Cream. The band has been labeled hard rock, stoner rock, jam band, power trio and blues-rock. KAMCHATKA has done numerous support tours in Europe and the USA, 2014 will mark their first headline tour, taking them to countries like Germany, Austria, Holland and Switzerland

Motivational Jumpsuit" is the latest, bestest release by reunited indierock (whatever that means) juggernaut (means an unstoppable force) GUIDED BY VOICES. It speaks in several silvery tongues, and like last year's "English Little League" takes many routes to the same shimmery, elusive destination: rock greatness. Its twenty songs (in thirty-eight minutes!) range from the shaggy Who Sell Out pop-pourri of "Evangeline Dandelion" to the lurching, rifferific "Planet Score," breezing briskly through every worthwhile rock und roll style sheet along the way. Pollard and co.'s influences are by now so thoroughly assimilated that GUIDED BY VOICES referents are mostly to other GUIDED BY VOICES songs/eras: "Save The Company" calls to mind GBV's Bee Thousand/Alien Lanes lo-fi glory daze, while "Vote For Dummy" could be from Isolation Drills. For instance. Recent intramural turmoil aside (GUIDED BY VOICES has a long history of members qutting/getting fired/posting private correspondence online/waking up in the gutter), the band has never sounded more cohesive;
when Tobin Sprout's insanely catchy feather-light confection "Record Level Love" bobs up against the deeply purple spray-paint rock of "I Am Columbus," which then pinballs into the elastic, sprightly "Difficult Outburst and Breakthrough," the pacing and variety always seem to make some kind of higher sense, if only as an appeal to the senses. "Motivational Jumpsuit" is gangly, wordy, heavy, lovely, catchy, rocky, complexly simple, and better than almost any record you'll hear this year. This is the fifth record (in three years) by New Era GBV, and there will be more. This is not counting the eleventy-three solo albums/side projects frontman Robert Pollard has released under his own name and various proxies. The listener may be forgiven a certain degree of bewilderment at the sound feast spread before him, but rest assured, this is the result of hard labour by a restlessly inventive musical mastermind. You can dig in anywhere you like, but you will always come back for more. Like a star to every wandering bark, GUIDED BY VOICES is as constant as love. You can't say better than that
