This is the first in a series of four albums recording all 80 of the folk songs in English that Ralph Vaughan Williams arranged for voice and piano or violin. 57 of the 80 songs have not previously been recorded in these arrangements, so there is a good deal of unknown - but very beautiful - music to be found here. This first album has 23 tracks including 15 world premières. It includes Folk Songs from Sussex (1912) and Six English Folk Songs (1935). Later volumes will include songs collected in the Eastern Counties (1908), the Appalachian Mountains (about 1938) and from Newfoundland (1946). Vaughan Williams is well known as a collector of folk songs, but his own collection by no means predominates in this series; most of the arrangements were made and published as a collaborative effort, drawn from many sources. The 14 songs from Sussex on this album were all collected by Percy Merrick from Henry Hills, a farmer from Lodsworth, Sussex, around 1900. Some will be well-known in other arrangements; others will be unfamiliar. Praised by Opera for her "dramatic wit and vocal control", British soprano Mary Bevan is internationally renowned in baroque, classical and contemporary repertoire, and appears regularly with leading conductors, orchestras and ensembles around the world. Opera singer Nicky Spence is one of Scotland's proudest sons and his unique skills as a singing actor and the rare honesty of his musicianship are steadfastly earning him a place at the top of the classical music profession. Roderick Williams is one of this country's most sought after baritones and is constantly in demand, encompassing a repertoire from the baroque to world premières. In 2016 he won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Singer of the Year award. In 2010, British violinist Jack Liebeck won a Classical Brit in the young British classical performer category. A multiple-prize winning and critically acclaimed conductor and accompanist, William Vann is equally at home on the podium or at the piano and is the founder and Artistic Director of the London English Song Festival.

Chen Reiss, who is at the heart of Mozart’s Ch’io mi scordi di te? as well as Beethoven’s terzetto, is a rising star of the opera world, receiving widespread acclaim for her sumptuous sound. Mozart wrote this concert aria for himself and the soprano Nancy Storace, who had played Susanna in his opera, The Marriage of Figaro. For this recording, Chen Reiss is paired with pianist Javier Negrín, who has enjoyed considerable acclaim for his solo Odradek releases. The World Premiere Recording of John Tavener’s ‘Palintropos’ for piano and orchestra, performed by the Japanese pianist Aruhi with the New London Orchestra and conducted by Ronald Corp. With the exception of The Whale and Celtic Requiem, the earlier music of John Tavener has been somewhat eclipsed by the mid to late works such as The Protecting Veil, The Ikon of Light and The Veil of the Temple. Here is an opportunity to discover discover one of Tavener’s early masterpieces. Dating from 1978 it was composed and was flanked by his chamber opera A Gentle Spirit (1977) and Akhmatova Requiem (1978). Palintropos is one of Tavener’s most dynamically works in his output and alternates between columns of sound of exhilarating, ferocious pianism and lyrical arabesque-like passages of sheer beauty. In this World Premiere Recording of John Tavener’s ‘Palintropos’ the pianist is the brilliantly talented Japanese pianist Aruhi (making her debut commercial recording) and she is accompanied by the New London Orchestra conducted by Ronald Corp. Also on the album is Michael Stewart’s ‘Beyond Time and Space (In Memoriam John Tavener). A three movement work composed for Aruhi exploring the nature of ‘consciousness’ and the idea of consciousness as informa on that exists beyond me and space that ul mately permeates the en-re universe. Aruhi is a classically trained pianist and composer who has given recitals in Japan and Europe, both as soloist and accompanist, working with, among others, the oboist Katsuya Watanabe, the violinists Ami Ito and Michiko Kobayashi.

The remastered recordings on this album are taken from early recordings and film soundtracks. The music ranges from ballets (Holst's The Perfect Fool and Manuel de Falla's El Amor Brujo), through incidental music for a play (Delius's Hassan), to films, with music by Vaughan Williams, Walton, Alwyn, Parker, Boughton and Bliss. Ralph Vaughan Williams's great theme for the wartime film 49th Parallel has reappeared in many guises, but is still popular in its original form; Muir Mathieson, who recorded the soundtrack made this early recording in 1948. A composer himself, Mathieson conducted music for many films and commissioned film scores from others, including several on this recording. Gustav Holst's ballet The Perfect Fool was first performed in 1923, but the recording presented here is Sir Adrian Boult's first recording, from 1954. The theatre producer Basil Dean commissioned music for James Elroy Flecker's play Hassan, first performed in 1923. Excerpts from the recording made in that year include the 'Serenade', sung as a wordless tenor solo, and the evocative final chorus 'The Golden Road to Samarkand'. Manuel de Falla's ballet El Amor Brujo was written in 1914 and was an important feature of the 1958 film 'Honeymoon'. This recording, with Beecham conducting, was taken from the soundtrack. Beecham did not make a commercial recording of the work, so this recording is especially valuable. Rutland Boughton's Lorna's Song from the film Lorna Doone brings back to circulation a delightful recording not heard since the days of 78s, and sung by the star of the film, Victoria Hopper, who is featured on the cover image. Odradek Records presents Schubert's extraordinary Piano Trios performed by musicians who share a rare affinity and rapport, both with one another and with Schubert's music: violinist Franco Mezzena, cellist Sergio Patria and pianist Elena Ballario. Franco Mezzena honed his musicianship in duos with his father, the great pianist Bruno Mezzena, and Sergio Patria and Elena Ballario have been performing together for over 30 years. These three artists have known each other by reputation for many years, but their artistic association began in 2015 as a natural consequence of mutual long-distance esteem. Franco's precision and rigour on the violin, combined with Sergio's innate expressiveness and Elena's musical balance, are the three main characteristics that make this trio complete. The first rehearsal of the Mezzena-Patria-Ballario Trio involved playing through Schubert's Piano Trio No. 2, a piece for which the three artists feel a particular passion and with which their interpretative affinity manifested itself immediately. Their concert activity has led them to performances of the standard trio repertoire, including recordings of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, but also rare performances and recordings of music such as the trios by Ermanno Wolf Ferrari and Alberic Magnard. While Franz Schubert worked on his noble, monumental song-cycle, 'Winterreise', he also wrote his two Piano Trios, the lyricism and 'joie de vivre' of which recall the exuberance of earlier works. Schubert's Piano Trios filled a gap in piano trio writing that had lain open since Beethoven's 'Archduke' Trio of 1811. Like Beethoven, Schubert treats the instruments equally, but his own style is unmistakable. Both Schubert and Robert Schumann reflected contemporary opinion in their preference for the intellectual rigours of the Piano Trio No. 2, which was at first the more popular of the two; but the airy, graceful Piano Trio No. 1 has since become the more frequently performed work. Both are remarkable for distinct reasons: the first is sunny and charming, the second more complex and on an ambitious scale. This release offers the listener a new interpretation of Schubert's Piano Trios, performed with intimacy and contagious joy by these exceptional musicians

This recording consists of six fantastic, beautiful, sometimes a little bizarre, rare violin sonatas from the early 18th century and includes three première recordings. This release is the first of a new FHR series in which samples of the musical riches (mostly not yet published or recorded) that lie in the Dresden Schrank II collection which FHR will bring to life through new recordings. A large portion of the Schrank II manuscripts belonged to the composer/violinist Johann Georg PISENDEL (1687-1755), who whilst travelling throughout Europe, amassed a huge quantity of music, mostly manuscript. Some he bought from music shops or receive directly from composers. Most, however, he copied out himself. This collection is one of the largest and most diverse repositories of late-baroque music in the world. The Austrian Johann Joseph VILSMAYR's strange but illuminating Partita (Sonata) is a first recording, and in fact one of only two known extant sets of works by the composer, the other being the 6 Partitas also released by FHR. Alongside two gorgeous sonatas by the Italian Gasparo VISCONTI, there are three tremendous sonatas by Swiss-born Johann Freidrich SCHREIVOGEL. The only sonata not from Schrank II on this recrording, the one in E flat major, is from the Tartini Collection, also a première recording, is now featured on the ABRSM Grade VIII violin examination syllabus (2020-23). The Two brilliant musicians on this recording were chosen specifically for their incredible skills, musicianship and specialist baroque talent. Violinist Kinga Ujszászi and harpsichordist Tom Foster, both members of The English Concert baroque orchestra, give incredibly exciting and stylish performances in a wonderful crystal clear recorded sound.
