Italian pianist Michele Campanella has become renowned as a Liszt specialist, but with customary modesty and respect for the composer's music he has chosen to wait until now to record the seminal 'Années de pèlerinage'. The desire to get to grips with these pieces dates back 50 years to when Campanella was first starting to play Liszt's music, but he waited, recognising that maturity and experience would bring him closer to Liszt's own state of mind as he composed these pieces. Liszt's dazzling virtuosity is often emphasised, but in this recording Campanella has accentuated the composer's more introspective tendencies, making this a unique and truly insightful interpretation. The three sets of Liszt's 'Années de pèlerinage' take the listener on a journey not only through the geographical regions that inspired the composer, Switzerland and Italy, but on a voyage through his own personal development, becoming increasingly inward-looking and spiritual with each cycle. The first set, 'Suisse', already displays much of that psychological scope, with works of quintessential Romanticism: poetic, evocative and wide-ranging in their emotional landscape. The second set, 'Italie', is even more organic and compact in its conception, and in the final set we hear an older composer reflecting on life and death in music characterised by impressionistic colours and profound spiritual depth. This album is a rare opportunity to hear a musician immersed in Liszt's world perform this music in a way that puts the music first; Campanella does not use Liszt's pieces as a vehicle to showcase his own skill, but records them with a sincere wish to communicate the intricacies of the repertoire. With this in mind, Campanella has recorded Liszt's works on a Steinway model D from 1892 that has survived to this day with all its original components intact, resulting in a warm and authentic sound.

Spanish cellist Adolfo Gutierrez Arenas and German-Korean pianist Christopher Park deliver refreshingly vigorous, even irreverent performances of the complete Beethoven Cello Sonatas, works that offer the listener a unique overview of the composer's evolving style. This duo regularly performs all five Cello Sonatas together in their concert programmes because there are few examples, from any other composer, of a relatively short cycle in which the listener can experience such an insight into the artistic development of a titan like Beethoven. It is a journey of enormous and overwhelming intensity, from the confident statement of a composer sure that he was destined to be heard (Op. 5); the revelation of a new voice, powerful and certain of itself (Op. 69); and the transition into a more introspective, reclusive inner world (Op. 102). In the two Op. 5 Sonatas Beethoven lifts the cello from the realm of the orchestra or quartet; in Op. 69 he ennobles it, revealing it as a worthy equal to the violin. The two Op. 102 Sonatas are more elusive, their textures venturing along paths presaging a new language. Alfred Brendel wrote that these two works "continue to produce a violent commotion, just as they did with Beethoven's contemporaries", marking as they do "the start of a new style, so different that it defies definition". Adolfo Gutierrez Arenas was awarded the Maurice Ravel Prize and made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra before embarking on an illustrious career. "Adolfo is a cellist of exceptional ability, both as an instrumentalist and as a superbly gifted musician" (Bernard Greenhouse, cellist of the Beaux Arts Trio). Christopher Park has been chosen as a 'Rising Star' by ECHO (European Concert Hall Organisation), and alongside his award-winning engagements as a soloist, he is passionately involved in chamber music, regularly collaborating with an array of prominent artists. "Christopher Park is a pianist who captivates with his fascinating technical mastery, astounding musical maturity, and a particularly intense performance style" the jury awarding Park the Leonard Bernstein Award in 2014.

France chamber duo Snowdrops, formed in 2015 by Mathieu Gabry and Christine Ott, release their graceful debut album Volutes, an eloquent miniature symphony of strings, piano and the notoriously challenging Ondes Martenot instrument. Christine Ott has performed alongside celebrated film composer Yann Tiersen, longstanding UK alternative band (and reputable soundtrack composers) Tindersticks, and French post-rock experimentalists Oiseaux-Tempête, resulting in the breadth of musical knowledge and the acute, skillful sensitivity to compositional subtleties and sympathies evident in Volutes. Alongside their contribution of piano, strings, mellotron, electronics and the Ondes Martenot, for Volutes Gabry and Ott are joined by virtuosic viola player Anne Irène-Kempf. From a classical and baroque background, Kempf's extremely lively and spontaneous playing adds a special colour to the album. The duo draw from a unique combination of contemporary classical, jazz, electronic music and film score, and spent the first few years of their partnership composing essentially to picture. Most notably, this soundtrack work includes the score to Phuttiphong Aroonpheng's 2018 feature Manta Ray, which won the Lion Award for Best Film at the 2018 Venice Festival.

As a composer Sergei Prokofiev was so versatile that audiences never quite knew what to expect. As a strategy, this could misfire but with his first symphony he got things just right. He once described what he had wanted to achieve: ‘If Haydn had lived into this era he would have kept his own style while absorbing things from what was new in music. That’s the kind of symphony I wanted to write...’ The ‘Classical’ symphony has been a true classic since its first performance in 1918 and is one of the few genuinely witty pieces in the twentieth-century orchestral repertory. A few months after the performance, Prokofiev left Russia for the USA where he remained for some years before settling in Paris in 1923. It was here that he composed the Second Symphony, now with the aim to be as up-to-date as possible. The first audience in 1925 was more bewildered than enthusiastic, however, and Prokofiev himself came to have doubts, wondering whether in this symphony ‘made out of iron and steel’ he’d overdone the rough counterpoint and density of texture. He now returned to a project he had been working on for several years – the opera The Fiery Angel. In 1928, when he began to think that no opera house would take it up, Prokofiev decided to reuse the music and found that ‘the material unexpectedly packed itself up into a four-movement symphony’ – his Third, characterized by an overwhelming sense of anxiety and tension. The present disc is the fourth and last in a symphony cycle which has earned the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Andrew Litton critical acclaim worldwide.

The album will also feature Chicago house music icon Paris Brightledge, and Empire Of The Sun and Pnau’s Nick Littlemore. "During those studio days, the rest of the world shuts down," Groove Armada's Andy Cato said on recording the album. "There’s an intensity, anyone looking in might say madness, that kicks in when we’re totally lost amongst the instruments, synths and records day and night. But that shared, unspoken feeling that comes when we both know we’ve got it right cuts through as clear as ever.”
