Prole Art Threat' is producer Anthoney Hart's second LP for Planet Mu under his East Man alias, after 2018's well received debut 'Red White & Zero'. It brings together a set of MCs from all over London, Darkos and Eklipse from East London and Lyrical Strally from near Feltham who were on the first album, Ny Ny and Mic Ty also from East London, Streema and 'Vision Crew' member Whack Eye from Lewisham plus Fernando Kep, an MC from the burgeoning Brazil grime scene. They work across a cohesive set of tight riddims forged from thoughtful amalgams of grime, dancehall and drum & bass. The album takes its name from a Fall song/mission statement of the same title, the band being self-consciously working class and led by a brilliant autodidact in Mark E Smith. East Man relates that the title is to be taken as "a reflection of working-class creativity and how the establishment marginalise us and (perhaps on a subconscious level) see us as a threat. " Les Back, author of 'The Art of Listening' and 'Out of Whiteness: Color, Politics and Culture (with Vron Ware)' contributes liner notes to the record: East Man understands the force and the democracy of the mic. Listening to Prole Art Threat is like being at a dance. As the mic is passed between each of the MCs, a different tale is 'elevated... off the map' as Ny Ny puts it. We hear instalments from Forest Gate, Lee, Lewisham and Manor Park as these 'lyrical gaffers' and 'top boys and girls' tell tough stories of life under the scrutiny of the 'Feds' in a brutal and divided city. The bars and rhymes document what it means to live here; from the double standards applied to the sexuality of young girls and boys to the corrosive violence of everyday life. All this is dissected without compromise. This is not just a London story though, the inclusion of Fernando Kep from the burgeoning Grime scene in Brazil is evidence of the outernational reach of the music. The tracks on East Man's album explode the wilful ignorance of those who see 'the working class' in contemporary London as code for whiteness. This is the sound of a proletarian urban multiculture, made from Caribbean and African influences, sound system culture, pirate radio and the inexorable rhythms of Grime, Drum & Bass, Techno and Dancehall. It is the stirring of the "white" & "black" working classes who are living together and coming together on their own terms in sound. DJ Don Carlos (born Carlo Troja, from Varese-Italy) with his productions in the 90s has become one of the cult producers for DJs around the world. His track Alone released in 1991 for Calypso (under the Irma Records label) was and still is one of the classics of House Music, played by all the major American and British DJs. At the time of its publication it was considered an underground song and therefore did not sell very much, but over the years its myth has grown thanks to its subsequent productions as for example his second single, the EP entitled Mediterraneo, title which it will then inspired his first CD album printed in the USA with the same title. Several other singles followed, another album, always printed only in the USA, entitled Aqua, from which a triple promo vinyl was extracted which today is one of the artist's most requested rarities. In Italy his third album was released in 2002 entitled The Music In My Mind where Kim Mazelle, Michelle Weeks, Taka Boom and Kevin Bryant were present as vocal guests. In 2009 a collection of the first two albums released in the USA titled Mediterraneo-Club Favourite Collection '90-98 and in 2010 his fourth album entitled The Cool Deep which reproduced the sounds closest to his first productions. Also active as a remixer for Italian and international labels, one of his most important works is the remix of Byron Stingily of the song You Make Me Feel of which he made a worldwide hit. As a producer he also used other pseudonyms such as Montego Bay, Aquanuts, Sotterranea and Love 2 Love Orchestra. He has played and plays in different countries such as London, New York, Miami and at various festivals, such as the Robot and the Stickermule Festival in an evening with Apparat, Derrick May, DJ Koze, Lil 'Louis, Young Marco and Ellen Allien, LTJ Xperience .His peculiarity has always been the musicality of his productions, thanks to the various musicians who accompanied him in the studio, which created a sound that defined in the 90s some of the House's subgenres such as Paradise House and the Ambient House. And this is the kind of sound that compose this new release of Don Carlos entitled Livin a Dream (the name of his Radio Show). It is a collection of unreleased tracks or alternative versions of tracks all produced in the 90s, collected on a double vinyl of 12 tracks and a double CD of 22. The productions made by the artist in those years were numerous and therefore a selection work was done in his archive to find the best of his sound that has remained unpublished to date!

Booka Shade reveal their ninth studio album as April welcomes the arrival of ‘Dear Future Self’ on Blaufield Music. Accompanied by a second LP containing seven brand new tracks from the band’s leader John Rocca. Freeez were a legendary group from London, known as one of the UK’s main jazz-funk bands of the early 1980s. Led by John Rocca, Freeez consisted of various musicians, originally with Rocca and others including Andy Stennet (keyboards), Peter Maas (bass guitar) and Paul Morgan. Their debut album ‘Southern Freeez’ was released in 1981 and contains the hit song ‘Southern Freeez’, which included guest vocals by Ingrid Mansfield Allman. John Rocca initially released the album it on his own Pink Rythm label before being signed to Beggars Banquet. A few years later, they had even more hits. Their biggest, ‘IOU’, was a #1 club single and was written and produced by renowned producer Arthur Baker with lyric contributions and lead vocals by John Rocca and remixed by Jellybean Benitez and Baker. It was a hit in the US in addition to the UK and was used in the legendary breakdancing movie Beat Street. ‘Pop Goes My Love’ was another hit. Rocca also had a hit as a solo artist in 1984 with ‘I Want It To Be Real’. While they may not be a household name, if you know, you know. They have been sampled many times, by artists including Jamie xx, Coolio, Brandy, Madlib and more. Nearly 40 years after the original release of ‘Southern Freeez’, after being contacted by Beggars Arkive about a reissue, John was inspired to go back to his roots. He pulled together some of the work that he had been experimenting with over the years and enlisted some musicians (including his nephews) to play on the tracks, saying that doing so “was a nice reflection of the past meeting the present.” “The melancholic suburban soul of ‘Southern Freeez’ never gets tired for me... an album that has remained at the top of my Brit Funk pile!” - Gilles Peterson
