Sidney Bechet's historic recordings for Blue Note and RCA Victor tend to overshadow some of his other work because they have been reissued more frequently, though there are lesser-known dates worth acquiring as well. This Columbia LP compiles three separate recording sessions made between 1938 and 1947. Bechet sticks almost exclusively to soprano sax throughout each of them and has ample space for his solos, full of his trademark heavy vibrato. The earliest set matches him with drummer Zutty Singleton, bassist Henry Turner, and guitarist Leonard Ware (all members of his working band at the time), along with pianist Dave Bowman and baritone saxophonist Ernie Caceres. The Bechet-Singleton collaboration "Jungle Drums" has delightful solos by the two reeds, along with Singleton's exotic tom-toms. Six tracks come from a 1947 quartet with pianist Lloyd Phillips, bassist Pops Foster, and either Freddie Moore or Arthur Herbert on drums. Bechet's swinging tribute to a legendary jazzman, "Buddy Bolden Stomp", a romp through "Just One Of Those Things", and a heartfelt arrangement of "Laura" are the highlights of this session. Another 1947 session gives a preview of the future of classic jazz, featuring a sextet led by Bechet's star pupil, a young Bob Wilber, along with Dick Wellstood, who would rise to fame as a master stride interpreter. Bechet plays soprano sax and Wilber sticks to clarinet on two numbers, though they switch roles on "Kansas City Man Blues". While Wilber doesn't have Bechet's strong vibrato on soprano sax, they are harder to tell apart on clarinet. Ken Dryden/AMG. 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL 4 PAGE INSERT Dhafer Youssef is a composer, singer and oud player from Tunisia. The oud is an Arabic lute, a pear-shaped string instrument that can achieve a beautiful sound from those who know how to master it. Youssef developed an interest for jazz music at an early age and started singing when he was still five years old. Music comes natural to him as he is derived from a long line of muezzins and mastering vocal performances is to him a heritage and a family tradition. Later he left his homeland to start a jazz career and has lived in Europe since 1990, usually in Paris or Vienna. He also works in avant garde and world music where he has been nominated for awards. Today he is considered to be the most inventive oud player and a leader of the movement referred to as contemporary music, which fuses Eastern and Western music. Dhafer Youssef's talent extends to the world of film music. Critics note his outstanding performance in the soundtrack of Black Gold composed and conducted by the legendary James Horner in 2011. The latter invites him to a new collaboration in 2012 for the soundtrack of The Amazing Spider-Man. In 2013 Dhafer Youssef released his album Birds Requiem. This album is a very personal recording that has been prepared at a turning point of the artist's life. The album is structured around the Birds Requiem Suite ("Birds Canticum", "Fuga Hirundinum", "Archaic Feathers" and "Whirling Birds Ceremony") and can be posed as music for an imaginative movie. The artist, lead singer and song writer Beady Belle will release her first album as a solo artist in May 2016. The Beady Belle band split up in 2015. The Beady Belle artist will from now on continue the journey on her own. The new album is symbolically entitled "On my own". On this new album (as also on all the previous Beady Belle albums) she has written all the music and lyrics. The famous jazz pianist, Bugge Wesseltoft is the producer of this new album and he also plays all the keyboards (Grand piano and Fender Rhodes). Beady Belle followed her dream. The "On my own" album was recorded in New York City, with world class American jazz musicians; Gregory Hutchinson (drums), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Joshua Redman (saxophone). The atmosphere from the pulsating city was successfully captured into the intimate recording studio on Manhattan. All songs live recorded. The sound of the album gives associations to the 70s. Recorded at Eastside Sound Studio (established in 1972) - with acoustic drums, double bass, grand piano and Fender Rhodes. There's a feeling of excellence. All the way from the sublime lyrics, the strong songs, the virtuoso musicians in the band and the featuring soloist to the intimately soft lead vocal. It's playful yet under control. After last year’s double CD / double LP SUONO, Martin Kälberer follows up with his new EP “morgenland”. “My music is always a description of the state of mind and, ultimately, always the attempt to draw a musical picture of the world, the way I am currently experiencing it. Therefore, it is only natural that the music constantly changes on stage and so the thought came up to take these changes into account, after playing SUONO one year live on stage and, so to say, give a small musical update. Unlike SUONO, however, there is no subdivision in “pure piano” and “metal sounds”, but rather the intuitive grip in the large paintbox. This is how the piano, the prepared piano, the hang and other metal harmonics, vibrandoneon, percussions of all kinds and my voice are mixed into one. The suite “morgenland“ was created, a reflection in five parts which are valid as a whole as well as in their individual parts. There have been many new thoughts and emotions in these five titles, and quite unintentionally – but inevitably – the main theme of the EP has emerged – everything revolves around movement, change, destruction, migration, escape, arriving, new beginnings. For example, the title “gibellina” is dedicated to a place in Italy that was completely destroyed by an earthquake, then was decayed for decades, and finally was resurrected through an art project, giving it a completely new destiny and thus a new life. This peculiarly ambivalent mood has inevitably challenged equally opposing musical emotions. Current events also call for a (first of all musical) opinion, and so “aleppo“ is the expression of my horrified speechlessness in the face of the humanitarian disaster in Syria. With “found again (reprise)” I took up a theme from SUONO, which I varied, expanded and re-recorded. For this title and “gibellina“ I created videos, but not by putting together music and pictures afterwards, but by capturing the exact moment, in which the recording was created, which is also the same on the CD. This was very important to me, because with all the technical possibilities – which I always try and use – the unique moment in which things are adding up, simply happen, surprise myself – are what I am looking for. ” – Martin Kälberer Record Label: Fine Music / GLM Style: Jazz
