WERGO is proud to present another recording by Enjott Schneider. In 'Clair Obscur Colors of Saxophones', extreme contrasts play a defining role: beautiful and ugly, loud and soft, bright and dark all these qualities are brought to life by the Berlin saxophone quartet, clair-obscur. The musical spectrum ranges from Old Masters to the extreme fringes of contemporary music. Cri Muet for saxophone and orchestra brings together tender lyricism and machine-like rhythms, along with Beethoven quotations and contemporary atonal harmonies. As Times Go Bye for alto, tenor, and baritone saxophone plays with the concept of time using motivic material from Johann Sebastian Bach. In Pavane, old and new meet in the contrasting sounds of saxophone and English Horn as well as in references to the music of the Spanish Renaissance composer Luis de Milán. In Berlin Punk, Enjott Schneider attempts to transpose the attitude and character of Punk culture into a symphonic setting. Rough, loud, dirty, insolent, and aggressive, yet also lyrical, poetic, and yearning: this is the impressive emotional range that is radically achieved in the virtuoso performances by the members of clair-obscur.

This second and last volume completes two different sets of string quartets: the four so-called Solo Quartets by Franz Anton Hoffmeister and Gioachino Rossini’s six String Sonatas (or Sonate a quattro). Both sets differ from the ‘normal’ configuration in that they allow a double bass to take part, albeit in different roles. Rossini, who composed his sonatas at the age of 12 (!), left out the viola and gave the double bass a more or less conventional bass role – apart from the occasional virtuosic outburst. The sonatas were first published in an arrangement for traditional string quartet and are often heard performed by string orchestras.In Vienna, where he was active as a composer and music publisher, Hoffmeister (1754-1812) chose a different solution than Rossini and gave his double bass player a leading role in the ensemble, letting it replace the first violin. It was no coincidence that this happened in Vienna – considering the amount of solo works for the double bass composed there, the standard of playing must have been exceptional. On the present recording, it is the Dutch player Niek de Groot who takes up Hoffmeister’s challenge in the company of a Finnish trio consisting of Minna Pensola, Antti Tikkanen and Tuomas Lehto. Featuring the same team, Volume 1 (BIS-2317) was described by a reviewer in Gramophone as ‘entertaining, effortlessly enjoyable and beautifully performed’ upon its release in 2017.

The project provides for the creation of a complete registration of the work 'L'Estro Poetico-armonico', music by Benedetto Marcello, texts by Gerolamo Ascanio Giustiniani. The project started in 2013 within the Madesimo Music Festival, on the initiative and support of Mario Marcarini and under the artistic direction of Lydia Cevidalli, director of the Ensemble Salomone Rossi. The record project proposes a comparison of manuscripts and editions to know the steps that led to these transcriptions and a comparison of data to identify the methods of frequentation of Marcello with members of the Jewish community. The record released in autumn 2018 contains the recording of 3 psalms, including Psalm 15 with the presence of a Jewish melody, and some chamber music.

Art is communication. When I write music, I aim for it to be heard and understood'. Modern avant-garde composers have transformed noise into a legitimate element of music – not least by an increased use of percussion instruments. For this CD, the young multi-percussionist Leonie Klein has collected a number of solo works that represent various stages in the development of New Music. Leonie Klein masterfully reveals each work’s unique profile in the field of tension between composers’ intentions and interpretational freedom. This collection displays multiple aspects of modern percussion music and is a representative exploration of an important area of New Music. Leonie Klein’s interpretation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Zyklus (1959), written for an orchestra of percussion instruments played by a single performer, is a kaleidoscope of sound colours. In Iannis Xenakis’s Psappha from 1975, constantly changing rhythmic patterns depict musically structured periodicity. Helmut Lachenmann’s Intérieur I (1966) gives life to exquisitely subtle sound events, while Nicolaus A. Huber in Póthos (2010) brings contrasting elements into harmony to reveal “the longing of one note for the next”. In Thunder (1993), Peter Eötvös allows the timpani to achieve constantly changing pitches through the use of rapid pedal adjustments, and Johannes Julius Fischer’s repetitive Gathering (2018) for prepared vibraphone represents the current world of percussion music.

Brahms probably heard most of these tunes as a child growing up in Hamburg, played by the Gypsy orchestras that were famous for their 'Hungarian' dance tunes. These passionate and high-spirited melodies fascinate with their abrupt changes of mood, fanciful reveries and extravagant embellishments. Brahms may even have written a few of the melodies himself! But his hand is evident in the lush harmonies and emotional depth. This version for violin and piano was arranged by Brahms' friend Joseph Joachim, the greatest violinist of his generation. The dances are played brilliantly by violinist Sabrina-Vivian Höpcker, who captures flawlessly the wild exuberance and deep sorrow of these alluring tunes. Fabio Bidini is the ideal collaborator, and together they have produced an album of uncommon beauty and appeal.

The English composer Steve Elcock (b. 1957) spent years writing music without ever expecting it to be heard: based in rural France, he worked as a translator, composing ‘for the drawer’. A recent Toccata Classics recording of his Third Symphony and other orchestral pieces revealed him to be a major symphonic voice. The works on this first album of his chamber music show the same long-term control of harmonic tension, occasionally leavened by a mischievous sense of humour. The Clarinet Sextet and The Shed Dances are immediately appealing in their melodiousness and harmonic language, whereas the darker, edgier String Trio No.1, with its stark juxtaposition of contrasts, and the sextet An Outstretched Hand, which treads a fine line between anger and grief, both offer powerful comment on our troubled 21st century. The Veles Ensemble – Hartmut Richter, violin, Ralitsa Naydenova, viola, and Evva Mizerska, cello – is a string trio based in London, its repertoire both exploring rarely heard masterpieces and bringing the classics to life. Jennifer Koh, a 'brilliant violinist' (The New Yorker) who performs with 'conviction, ferocity, and an irresistible sense of play' (Washington Post), showcases works by Kaija Saariaho, the visionary and much-honoured Finnish composer with whom Koh has closely collaborated and feels a deep personal bond. The album offers the world-premiere recording of Saariaho’s Light and Matter for violin, cello, and piano, inspired by sunlit colors and shadows in a city park outside the composer’s window. Also receiving its first recording is the violin and cello version of Aure, meaning a gentle breeze, created for and dedicated to Koh and cellist Anssi Karttunen, another champion of Saariaho’s music. The six quartets of Opus 50 by Joseph Haydn are among the most important works in the string quartet genre – that chamber music formation so highly valued since the era of the First Viennese School, allowing only masters of the composer’s art to express themselves. Haydn’s so-called “Prussian Quartets” (Hob. III:44-49) of 1787 were dedicated to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm II, an enthusiastic amateur cellist. Here, he developed the classical style of music-making, which he had shaped so decisively himself, even further. Starting with a rather simple theme, the motifs are artfully wrought – especially in the opening movement of the quartets – and it is notable that all four instrument are treated as near-equals. The six masterworks of the Austrian composer were captured by the Amati Quartet in studio recordings made in 1995 and 1997, winning the French record award “Choc du monde de la musique” at the time – now they have been assembled and released together by DIVOX on a double CD. The interpretation by the renowned Amati Quartet is undoubtedly a reference recording of these sophisticated and mellifluous, yet humorous and by no means academic string quartets.
