Like Richard Strauss, besides the dominating stage works Richard Wagner’s oeuvre catalogue shows several works for other genres, including compositions for choir, piano and chamber music as well as songs. Amongst them, the Wesendonck-Lieder, composed after texts by his occasional muse, Mathilde von Wesendonck, the wife of a Swiss industrialist, have attained special popularity. Very special is the version which can be heard on this recording for deep voice played by the violoncello. Additionally to the chamber pieces by Richard Strauss also the Album Page and prelude to Tristan und Isolde in the cello/piano version by Richard Wagner can be found on this CD.

This is the tenth release in the Toccata Classics exploration of the music of the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas (1905–2000). Here his chamber music with flute is in the spotlight. As with previous albums in this series, the music here highlights the characteristics that make Farkas’ music so appealing: catchy tunes, transparent textures, buoyant rhythms, a fondness for Baroque forms and a taste for the folk-music of his native Hungary that marks him out as a true successor to Bartók and Kodály. Some of these pieces speak a tougher language that shows Farkas to have been in touch with his times, but it is the infectious melodic appeal of most of the music here that carries the day. This album features twelve works comprising 35 individual movements and eleven different combinations of performer. The central performer here is one of Europe’s finest flautists, the Hungarian-Danish András Adorján.

The great Viennese musical tradition, as represented by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler, found itself straining the limits of tonality during the first two decades of the 20th century. Schoenberg, Webern and Berg consequently forged a new compositional world, engaging in what they saw as the historically inevitable development of the system of atonality. In contrast, however, Karl Weigl continued to pitch his marvellous music in a more traditional style. Schoenberg wrote in 1938 that 'I always considered Dr. Weigl as one of the best composers of the old school; one of those who continued the glittering Viennese tradition'. This is clearly heard across Weigls entire output - in his symphonies, songs, concertos, string quartets, and the chamber works for piano, cello and violin in various combinations.

Energetic as well as poetic is Karola Obermüllers music, and it reveals hidden and unknown elements underneath the multilayered musical material. Zooming in on musical details is a special feature in several of her pieces as in 'Pulstastung' for example. Here the distances between the musical occurrences are extended more and more, 'with an increasing pulse at the same time' (Karola Obermüller). Obermüller is inspired by ancient poetic texts as from the greek poet Sappho. Here she finds the essences of human existence like light and night, eros and longing. In 'Untergegangen der Mond' and 'silbern.' her music tries 'to create moments of magic' (Volker Blumenthaler in the booklet of the CD). In 'Myrmecia' microtonal shiftings are confronted with percussive making of sound, which are creating a 'strange, crackling, and insisting stream of sound', the composer compares to the wild activity of the primordial ant, the title is derived from.

Sueye Park introduced herself to the general public in 2017 with no less a calling-card than Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin. Performed with equal measures of poetic sensitivity and effortless virtuosity, this is a recital to dip into as well as to listen to from start to finish from the fiery passion of Pablo de Sarasate's Introduction et Tarantelle to Contemplation, Heifetz transcription of Brahms's song Wie Melodien zieht es mir.
