In the spectacular setting of a former submarine factory, American director and universal artist Robert Wilson creates a poetic visual world in which the mystical musical language of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt can cast its meditative spell. The Lost Paradise: In The Lost Paradise, we follow Arvo Pärt over a period of one year in his native Estonia, to Japan and the Vatican. The documentary is framed by the stage production of Adam’s Passion in which the artistic visions of Arvo Pärt and Robert Wilson mirror each other. Tracing their creative process, the film offers rare and personal insights into the worlds of two of the most fascinating personalities in the international arts and music scene.

Under the title ‘Origins’, this disc brings together works by composers of the first half of the twentieth century who frequently found inspiration in the musical traditions of their country. This musical journey travels across Europe from France to the borders of Asia. If Béla Bartók’s role in this field of the integration of popular traditions into classical language is indisputable, the personalities of the other composers assembled here deserve to be discovered. The Jewish composer Erwin Schulhoff was one of those whose works were relegated by the Nazi regime to this category of ‘degenerate music’. The Azerbaijani Fikret Amirov and the Armenian Arno Babajanian were victims of the constraints of the Soviet regime. And although Charles Koechlin produced an imposing catalogue of works, he suffered throughout his life from the fact that his career as a composer was eclipsed by his reputation as a theorist. All these works inspired by national music are contemporary with the political turbulence that agitated Europe between the two world wars, but also with the numerous movements that caused major upheavals in every artistic field during the same period.

This work was intended for his wealthy aristocratic pupils, and a priori it does not reflect only his personal practice. This versatile musician’s professional career consisted essentially in directing and playing the bombarde with his ensemble in the service of a number of doges and scuole. He also performed in the ridotti, the circles in which humanists and cultured nobles met. It is this refined art that William Dongois and his musicians propose to revive here, drawing on a very rich repertory of dances, songs and madrigals.

André Navarra (1911–1988), together with Pierre Fournier and Maurice Gendron, was acknowledged as one of the “three great” French cellists who left their mark on the European concert life of their era. He was born in Biarritz, won first prizes at the age of 13 and 16, and gained early practical experience in chamber-music ensembles before celebrating his solo debut in 1931 with the Concerts Colonne. After a stupendous competition win in 1937 in Vienna he began an international career that was to last for more than three decades. In parallel, Navarra began teaching: starting in 1949 (until 1979) he was professor at the Paris Conservatoire; from 1953 he also taught at the Accademia in Siena and at the Vienna College of Music, and from 1958 to 1986 he was a member of the illustrious teaching team at the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold, where his colleague on violin Tibor Varga taught. He can be heard playing with Varga on this 10-CD collection as well as on numerous studio and live recordings made at various times along the way of his remarkable career. (transl. JMBerridge)

Camilla Wicks, who was born in 1928, was one of the first female American violinists to pursue an international career. She was hailed as a child prodigy and was giving concerts by the age of seven. She gave her debut with the New York Philharmonic at the age of 13. Wicks played under the most prestigious conductors of her day, including Bruno Walter and Fritz Reiner, and she undertook several concert tours of Europe. Her recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto is legendary, greatly admired by the composer himself. Camilla Wicks married in 1951, had five children and interrupted her career in order to bring them up. In later years she began to give concerts again and she was a popular lecturer, though she never again achieved the global success of her earlier career. She ceased teaching in 2005. Camilla Wicks possessed phenomenal technique and achieved her greatest accolades for performances of nineteenth-century repertoire. In addition, Wicks was a champion of contemporary music and she premiered numerous modern compositions. (Excerpt from the booklet)

Benefitting from the jet aeroplane and from the record industry’s ability to reach out to world, they dominated chamber music making for nearly 40 years. But concert tours are only successful if reviews are ecstatic and audiences delighted. They both were. For nearly 40 years, the Quartet (who styled themselves ‘The Wolf-Gang’) roved the world, argued, celebrated and worked like no other group, and changed not a single member: Norbert Brainin, Siegmund Nissel, Peter Schidlof and Martin Lovett had a recording career from 1951 to 1987, ending only with the death of Peter Schidlof in 1987. A replacement was never a discussion since the quartet had made a vow to each other that they would play string quartets with no other musician. This sad occasion marked the end of a quartet whose universal musicianship to this day transcends any changes in style that quartet playing might have undergone since.
