DEPARTMENT M come from Leeds in the North of Englandshire. Ostensibly a creative vehicle for one Owen Brinley, they have spent the past year cautiously, yet crunchingly, developing a fascinating, fizzing sound which combines the heroic synths of yesteryear with a cutting contemporary electro sensibility. DEPECHE MODE, AIR, TALK TALK, CABARET VOLTAIRE and - of course - ELO are just some of the names referenced in their company, and fair play too - Owen Brinley is decidedly not a man afraid of a saxophone solo. Bolstered by a four person-strong live line-up this is an act which can straddle the divide between the shiny retro-obsessed Classic Pop magazine and the cool dark alleyways of modern East London. They have previous, do DEPARTMENT M: in March they released the "I'll Fax You An Apology" / "Black Boutique" single on local label Hide & Seek. In June they released the "The Second Prize" / "Absentia" single through Too Pure. Unsurprisingly, phrases like "abrasive beauty" and "brutalist pop economy" tend to be bandied about DEPARTMENT M's music, for theirs is a world of overdriven hip-hop drum loops crashing against smooth swathes of analogue synthesiser, where the beefiest of rhythms collide with the sweetest of vocals. Since 2010's "Balladeer" our bearded, slightly bear-like hero has moved home from Calgary, Alberta to Vienna, Austria (he was in search of "a wildly romantic Bohemia"), so now has a perfect base from which to plot his European tour to coincide with the album's launch. Expert lovers of gently bruised alt.folk.rock tumblings could well have first clocked WOODPIGEON in 2006 with the "winningly understated" (BBC) debut album "Songbook". Then came lovingly crafted long players with titles like "Treasure Library Canada", "Die Stadt Muzikanten" and the aforementioned "Balladeer". As well as swapping continents since the release of the latter WOODPIGEON has toured with Patrick Wolf, Andrew Bird and Junip and quietly, studiously gone about his business with an elegance which befits his winningly understated nature. "Thumbtacks And Glue"' rolls out the fulsome red carpet, strings and all. Backed at various points by mellotron, violin, harpsichord, oboe and French horn, as well as the more traditional rock "gear" and heaps of backing "singings", here is WOODPIGEON in his creative element: large of heart, subtle of melody and never afraid to fray a nerve or two, judging by the way the pluckily intelligent "Robin Song" sounds like a fraught Death Cab and the discordant squiggles of "The Saddest Music In The World" make like an irked Grandaddy. Electrifying Essex-based octet (there's eight of them, y'know) DINGUS KHAN, sometimes referred to as Blur-meets-Slipknot, release their debut album, "Support Mistley Swans", via fierce panda. The Back Story: "Rising like a behometh from the sludge of the Stour Estuary, Dingus Khan are exactly what you'd imagine a band with a name like Dingus Khan to be. They consist of three drummers to keep your heart beating. Three bass players to keep your feet tapping. A singing guitarist to melt young girls' hearts. And an electric ukelele demon just to keep you on your toes. Let Dingus Khan play their rock and roll music my boy, and let them play it Hard and Fast. Then Slow and Steady. Then Hard and Fast." So started the press release for DINGUS KHAN's searingly manic debut single, "Knifey Spoony", which was released on fierce panda sister label Label Fandango back in March of this year. It was so perfect we used it again on the press release for the follow-up single, the epic whistlefest that was "Made A List" (Giant Haystacks Records, July). And so immaculately does it still encapsulate the sixteen-legged groove machinery of DINGUS KHAN it may as well fill a large chunk of this, the press release for their debut album entitled "Support Mistley Swans". The East Of Englandshire runs through the DINGUS KHAN veins like so many top quality narcotics: they come from Manningtree, on the very northern tip of Essex, and indeed next door to Mistley, where the famous Mistley swans do their misty-eyed swanning; in spite of those Essex roots they have been heartily embraced by neighbours BBC Suffolk, who fast-tracked the band onto the Latitude bill in the summer; they happily ply their trade in venues like the Grinning Rat in Ipswich; and on October 10th they have been invited to support The Fall and The Undertones at Norwich Epic, which is itself a benefit gig for the John Peel Centre Of Creative Arts in Stowmarket. It's a good choice, too: if John Peel were around today he would surely embrace DINGUS KHAN to his random musical bosom and never let them go, not least because when fully armed Dingus Khan number eight (that's E.I.G.H.T), including Ben Brown (lead vocals / guitar), Josh Court (electric ukelele), Tom Armstrong (bass), Adam Toms (bass), Alex Dunne (bass). Nick Daldry (drums), Paul Miller (percussion) and Gareth Burney (percussion). Apparently they have issues with turning down puppy-eyed musicians. Or as DINGUS KHAN have put it themselves on several press releases in the past: "There is a new exciting music being made, with subtle harmonies and fierce grinding dischords, A music so powerful that it would drive us mad if only our ears were tuned to the sound of it." HEY SHOLAY are a five-piece group of musicians, filmmakers and artists from Sheffield and Leeds, who play a breed of psychedelic independent pop with a hint of the Northern Lights captured in a jam jar. They have been described as imperious masters of the contemporary anthemic chorus, with bright vibrant tunes and a beat guaranteed to make you tap your toes. They release their cosmically titled debut album "((O))" on fierce panda. It really is quite a journey. Way back in the mists of time - June 2011 in fact - HEY SHOLAY brought those bright, vibrant tunes and toe-tappingly fine beaticles to the doorstep of the general public with the release of the "Dreamboat" / "The Bears, The Bees, The Clocks" double AA-side single on Label Fandango. This beat happening was brought to the fore by HEY SHOLAY's cunning tactic of sending their unsolicited demo to the top secret panda / fandango HQ. On cassette. Wrapped in fake (bear) fur. Great work on every level, obviously, and HEY SHOLAY followed that effort up with, among other things, a tour with Crystal Antlers, an appearance at the NME Awards shows and lots of BBC airplay. Most recently they bedazzled the leftfield firmament with the "Burning" single. Along the way they managed to nail the kaleidoscopic - nay, kaleidopopic - whirligig of the "((O))" mini-opus and - here's the even cleverer bit - also got it mastered in the USA by Don Grossinger, a man who knows his way around the grooves and moves of Flaming Lips, Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. So HEY SHOLAY are progressive, but not oppressively so; populist, but not obsessively so. In fact, one can't quite get around what makes them tick and what encourages them to tock.
