Racoon started in 1997 as an acoustic duo made up of singer Bart van der Weide and guitarist Dennis Huige. They were joined by bass player Stefan de Kroon and drummer Paul Bukkens a year later, and their self-released demo It's An Ice Cream Day earned them the attention of several record companies and many positive reviews from the Dutch press. In 1999, Racoon were signed to Sony's S.M.A.R.T. label and at the end of the year they went into the ICP-studios in Brussels to record their full-length debut, Till Monkeys Fly, which included the single "Feel Like Flying". Here We Go, Stereo!, was buoyed by the hit "Eric's Bar".

The album features four singles;
"Frontin'" by Pharrell ft. Jay-Z, "Light Your Ass On Fire" by Busta Rhymes, "Hot Damn" by Clipse and "It Blows My Mind" by Snoop Dogg. Williams steps out with some help from Jay-Z on "Frontin'," one of the biggest Neptunes-related singles. The funky "Light Your Ass on Fire" features Busta Rhymes' more sexually aggressive and explicit come-ons. Amidst whirling sirens, Dirt McGirt's turn, "Pop Shit," boasts a comical Looney Tunes-worthy arrangement. "Popular Thug," originally a track on Kelis' Wanderland, gets a deserved new look, with Pusha T's role bumped in favor of Nas. The album debuted at number One on the US Billboard 200 Chart, and ultimately sold over half a million copies in the US, certifying Gold in the process.

The includes Jet's most popular song, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl". Get Born received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics. Jet entered the Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles with Dave Sardy to produce their debut album Get Born. Sardy had previously produced records for Marilyn Manson and The Dandy Warhols. The band left the recording studios halfway through recording the album to support the Rolling Stones on their 2003 Australian tour. The album's lead single, "Are You Gonna Be My Girl", was often singled out due to distinct similarities to Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life". The song featured a near-identical guitar riff, as well as a drum pattern markedly similar to that of Pop's well-known song. The band argued that "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" had more in common with '60s Motown, however - namely songs such as "I'm Ready for Love" by Martha And The Vandellas and "You Can't Hurry Love" by The Supremes.

Released in 2001, the album debuted at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and ultimately sold 1 million copies in the US and was certified platinum. The fourth single from the album, "Pass the Courvoisier Part II", peaked at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. On Genesis, the beats seem darker and more synth-oriented, giving it an edge reminiscent of the bass-heavy G-funk sound. "As I Come Back" is a good example, featuring a sustained keyboard note droning on throughout the chorus with Busta rapping in his raspy style. Busta Rhymes can also make a good dance song, like the hypnotic "What It Is," a fractured funk anthem that features robotic female vocals from Kelis and a slow beat consisting of clicks and snaps. Other guest appearances include P. Diddy's turn on the dramatic "Pass the Courvoisier," Mary J. Blidge on "There's Only One," and the occasional appearances by the Flipmode Squad, as well as production work from Pete Rock and Dr. Dre, among others.

180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel (1981) is a compilation of Jacques Brel compositions recorded by Scott Walker. The album brings all the Brel material that Walker covered on record. Walker transformed the numbers into unique, dramatic experiences. Each of the tracks is a gem, but three stand out: the grandiose, swirling waitz of "Amsterdam", the powerful "My Death", and "Next". Walker achieved that rare balance that distinguishes the best interpreters others' works - preserving the essence of the original while making the song entirely his own. It's logical that Walker gravitated to Brel: the Belgian was a singer/songwriter after Walker's own heart who told stories of lives and drama. Romantic emotions are for both important in their works.
